A friend was heading to Richard's for dinner the other night and I was invited, and although I was feeling rather dizzy & a bit weak after a new-agey healing session at a location nearby, I decided to go along. Although years ago our office used to order subs from this place at lunch (same owner, different food) I had never tried the New Mexican fare here. I think I made a good decision ordering the mango blue corn tortilla chicken enchiladas. They were marvelous. My friend ordered the quesadillas and although they did not look like anything spectacular, she seemed to enjoy them. To her credit, our waitperson was honest in describing the quesadillas and comparing the appetizer - size quesadillas to the larger-sized ones. So my friend knew what to expect. The real treat though was talking to Richard. We sat inside since it was sort of hot at the time we were there. We took a look at the patio though and it is absolutely adorable with a nice fountain in the center. Very nicely shaded by trees and arbors. At any rate, once we had finished our meals, Richard was talking with us, about the history of the restaurant, and the restaurant business in general, which I find quite interesting. He is a very cool dude! I like his attitude. So that's all I have to say for now about Richard's. Except for one thing---they have yummy after-dinner mints....chocolate covered peppermints!

Good margaritas and good atmosphere. I really wish this could be the great neighborhood hang out it has the potential to be. Unfortunately the service is not good, the policies are strange, and the food is not good enough to make up for all the shortcomings.

Like many on here, I want to like this place too. It's only a couple of blocks from me and has nice outdoor seating. It stops there. Richard, the owner, is the main reason I won't come back. First of all he hates kids eating there. He has said as much. Second, he is never nice about special requests. The food is decent but not worth putting up with him for. It's pricey as well. I hear from other neighbors that he is not friendly to residents near by. Way to shoot yourself in the foot by making those who would probably be regulars by making them mad. I keep hoping this place closes and someone buys it and makes the place what it could be.

My husband went here last night because it was close to a meeting we had later in the evening. We got there around 6pm for an early dinner and we were quickly and warmly greeted by Richard, the chef/owner. The restaurant was small, but cozy. I noticed a large patio, but since it was winter in Colorado we opted for the warm and cozy inside. I read some reviews before we decided to come. Most of them were great but I saw a couple of not-so-nice ones. I chose to ignore the latter. I am so glad I did. We had 2 glasses of merlot served in traditional big red wine glasses, Mark had the chicken burrito and I had an eclectic salad with walnuts feta cheese and lots of other interesting veggies and topped with a delicious homemade chicken curry. It was one of the best meals we had had in a long time and we told Richard we would definitely be back, and we told him that we would spread the word-which is why I am writing this review!! The portions are large and the prices are reasonable. The food is 5 star and so is the service. The cuisine is more tex mex than anything, but the large-size salads that are offered could be served in any health food/Mediterrean/California Cuisine restaurant. Running and operating a restaurant is tough and it's tougher when bad reviews are given on a site like this. But I sincerely hope you read this one and that you take a chance on this unique, out-of-way home-like restaurant. It's a mile (maybe a little less) off of Main Street. You drive through a residential area, and just when you think you must have taken a wrong turn you will see a big white sign in front of this charming restaurant.

I'll start this off by saying that I really wanted to love Richard's On Third -- it's within walking distance to my house, and I figured it'd be a fun, local dinner spot. Sadly, methinks not. When it comes to ambiance, it doesn't get any better than Richard's. This place is perfect for drinks, and if that's all you're looking to do with a couple of friends (and I do mean a couple -- the outside area is quite small,) then you've come to the right spot. Tthe food, however, is a whole 'nother story. The salsa tastes like tomato paste and hot spices. We told the friendly waitress the truth, explaining that this salsa just wasn't up to par, and lo and behold our bill came and the chips and salsa appetizer was still there on the receipt. Then came our chicken burritos... which had maybe one square inch of actual chicken in it, and which tasted like the kind you buy at the store pre-cooked. We ordered a mix of red and green chile sauce to top the burrito and both were pretty bad, adding no significant flavoring. Our meal, FYI, ran us about $13 per burrito, plus $6 for the salsa. In the end, we spent $35 (plus tip) on just plain shitty Mexican food. All in all, this place is an absolute rip off for the food you're getting. You're much better off going to Las Palmeras or Efrain's which are far better, albeit not fantastic either, but at least they're cheaper than Richard's!

Much like Richard III, sometimes you just have to bury a turd. This is an update to my 2013 visit since my last review was in 2012 (drinks only). I re-read some of the reviews since my previous time at Richards was decent and I didn't experience any of the service issues that other people talked about. This weeks' visit was no different. Service was pleasant, non intrusive and prompt. The food just tasted not so fresh and the cheese was a bit bitter even for someone who enjoys stinky cheese. The thought the portions were appropriate and the amount of chicken in our meals was what I'd expect from a 13-15 plate of food. It's just surprising how poorly the recipes are executed since it reads so well off the menu. Side was bland and to speak to someone elses point, the lettuce is pretty aged and white. Tea was a day or two old and the only thing we somewhat enjoyed were the poblano peppers in the queso. Yes. They use microwaves to cook and the ambiance is nicer outside on the patio versus being inside. Would I go here again... maybe for drinks but we would never eat here again....even if our meal were comped.

I'm sorry, if you like eating here you don't care about the taste or experience of food. I visited today for the first time in a year and I was shocked at the state of the quality control much less the way that our service was conducted. My mother ordered a salad and I chose the chicken burrito. For starters, the salad was deplorable. The lettuce was full of putrid and festering leaves. The state of the salad had to make me question the eye sight of the chef because it was so obviously rotten. We were sure to alert the waitress who promptly removed the dish from our bill. But when she asked whether my mother might want to order an alternative, we were told minutes later that management would not serve her what she ordered. Needless to say, she went without. The burrito was worse than the freezer-burned versions you can buy at any 7-Eleven. It was visibly microwaved to death, soggy, and was 90% low quality cheese. Looking back, I wish I had read a previous review that highlighted the lack luster state of the burrito dish. Normally I'd give an extra star of hope because of the venue. It's a quaint little place with a homey patio. But after factoring in the way were we treated there was no way the atmosphere was going to save our experience. My only hope is that ownership sees feedback like this and uses it as an opportunity to learn and correct these mistakes. Without taking action, I have no doubt that the negative word of mouth will spread and further prevent others from wanting patronize this ill-managed restaurant. Please Richard, take some time to overhaul the way you are managing Richard's on 3rd. It's got so much potential and with some focus on the quality of the food (I'd hire a passionate chef) and a little training in customer service, this place can turn around.

We live right down the street from here and we were really excited when we first moved in because it looked like such a cute neighborhood place to go. We walked down there one evening to try it out with our three year old daughter. We were seated in the patio area- which is admittedly a really lovely space- and then- that was it. No one came with menus, no one came with water, no one came to check on us. We just sat there. It was bizarre. They were busy, so the waitresses were running all over- serving the tables all around us- and we kept trying to flag one down but they avoided eye contact at all costs. So after 30 mins of waiting there like fools we left. We walked right by several of the staff as we left and no one said anything to us. We were ticked off! I don't know if it was because we had a (very well behaved, quiet) child with us, or what, but if you read the filtered reviews at the bottom of the review page you see that we weren't the only people to whom this has happened. I've been told by neighbors that you have to be a "regular" here to receive good service. Well, we weren't even given the chance to try any food, so I'm not sure how anyone can become a regular. I am giving it two stars only because after the initial incident I did walk over there one night with a friend around 9 PM and we each had a Margarita- there was only us and one other table there, and Richard was more than happy to serve us. The marg was fine- and the ambiance was lovely, but I wont be back for dinner anytime soon after our first experience. I keep hoping it will go out of business and someone will put in a coffee shop/cafe in the location.

Thank you, Richard! I have been looking for a place with killer margs, and I found it. The food here is so fresh, you will never need a reason to visit New Mexico. I agree with Dee & Dina- the prices are reasonable considering the quality of the meal. The outdoor environment was kid friendly, albeit somewhat quiet, also.

I'll be back and will re-review. This is solely based on a marg (strong!) and a side of red and side of green chili. With a flour tortilla. The server was quite worried about me asking for a tortilla, as apparently Richard (the owner) throws fits. After reading the reviews (which I read AFTER snacking there) I get it a bit more. That's not cool, dude. But apparently "he was in a good mood" and provided my tortilla. I think it was even warmed up. I don't remember though. I was high on mosquito repellent from attempting to walk on the St Vrain Greenway at dusk before we bailed and decided to grab a drink and chat instead. Good decision. The marg might have something to do with my lack of recollection. And this was a few weeks ago. Before the flooding devastated the Greenway. Hope Richard's is open and not flooded... I noticed 3rd ave was on the edge of one of the evac maps. Damn good red chili and green chili too. Not to spicy, good flavor. The hidden and unexpectedly nice patio rocks. They'll bring around a basket of whatever sort of DEET and mosquito repellent you could ask for. I was already covered, but that was a nice customer service oriented touch.

We'd heard & read varying reports on the food & service at this place, but the patio was enticing on a cool evening & the neighborhood location was a plus. We were surprised by the quality of both the food and the service. Both were excellent. The food is a cut above standard Mexican or Southwestern fare. The margaritas ($6.95) were large and delicious. Yes, the prices ($13 or more for most entrees) are more than for similar items at Mexican restaurants, but if you don't mind paying a little extra for top quality food, then this place is worth a visit. We'll be back.

We had two subs (Italian), chips and salsa, and a side of potato salad. $30.00 total The bread was good, not great. The sub itself was average. Not much to write home about. The potato salad is decent, more on the dill sweet side. Now the salsa...we were laughing about it because all we could come up with was that some ketchup and a can of chilies were thrown together. Unfortunately we were not impressed with the basics so we are hard pressed to try again, especially when it seems their specialty is supposed to be Mexican dishes. There is one unisex bathroom that is outside. The inside is small and you have to lock another door that must be shared for the staff. The outdoor area is really cute and full of vegetation and a waterfall. You can tell they really tried. Unfortuantely the food just isn't enough to call us back.

I'm not sure Richard's is open any more. Over the last couple of years, the quality of the food started declining. Once, the guacamole was made by hand. Our last couple of visits, it tasted as if it came from a can. The chips got cheaper, and the food tasted as if it had been microwaved. We just stopped going, despite living a block away. I haven't seen anyone there in months.

I've come here quite a few times lately, but only for lunch. At lunch, you order at the counter and then they bring the food out to you (not sure how it is for dinner). Food always came out in a flash. Really... shockingly fast. I've had the enchiladas a few times -- both the kind with mango and just the regular kind. They've been pretty good and tasted very fresh. The only issue that I have is that it is a bit overpriced. The patio is really nice, so it is a great place to go on a gorgeous Colorado day.

I went to RIchard's with a friend last night; we had such a wonderful time. Richard was incredibly friendly and welcoming. The blue corn chicken and mango enchiladas were AMAZING, and the margaritas were very good! You probably won't need more than one. A very fun place! I definitely want to go again.

I stopped in to find a rundown kitchen which made me uncomfortable to trust anything coming out of there, but after speaking with the owner, all my worries drifted away. He was an extremely personable host, very friendly, talkative, and genuinely interested. The sandwich was refreshing and filling. I haven't gone back yet, but it's on my list of places to try for dinner since I only went in for lunch.

Came here with my mom and aunt over the summer for a late dinner. We called before we headed over, and they told us that they were slowing things down, but that if we hurried over, they'd keep everything open for us! The patio outside has a great atmosphere. Very shady, relaxing, has a cool little fountain. We all ordered margaritas, which were delicious and large. We got some cerviche for an appetizer, and I had the blue corn mango chicken enchiladas. I thought the enchiladas were great, a really unique combination of flavors that I definitely enjoyed!

Went Thurs night about 5:30. We were the only customers. Richard and wait staff we nice and friendly. Homemade salsa was good. Ordered the house special of the Mango Blue Corn Chicken Enchiladas. I started to get concerned when I heard many rounds of microwave runs and dings in the back. Not too bad but the idea on our meal being microwaved kinda threw us off. And paying $40+ for a microwaved meal is not what I was looking for. Not going back

We made it clear we needed a gluten free entree. When it came out with flour, we asked for something new. The restaurant brought a new entree but wouldn't comp the original meal. Paying for two entrees because of an allergy that we made clear is ridiculous!

Eclectic is really the best word to describe this little cafe. They offer interesting Mexican dishes (e.g., mango green chili enchiladas, shrimp quesadillas), standard sub-type sandwiches, Italian deli sandwiches with pasta and salad sides, beer, margs, coffee-house fare (i.e., lattes, chai, espresso, capuccino), pastries. The temperature on the food could have been warmer, but both entrees were tasty, and the prices are reasonable. Cute, promising with room to improve--I can't help but think it would be up a star if there was a bit more focus but maybe that's part of the charm. Parking is a bit of a challenge. Small lot that backs up to busy street.

Their margaritas and guacamole aren't bad, but there's nothing else redeeming about this place. The employees are incompetent and the owner is a complete jerk. They are so unaccommodating to bigger groups (even like 5 people). Their food is overpriced and if I remember correctly, they don't allow substitutions. It's not even worth walking down the street for one drink. If the owner is there, which he usually is, he's either standing over your table the entire time you're eating or treating you and your party like crap. How is this place still in business?

  • Peggy B.

I've selected the star rating above because there's a bad mix at Richard's: really good food/margs AND very unpredictable behavior from Richard. Sometimes he can be nice, but several times I've witnessed him being verbally abusive to servers. My husband and I have patronized the place because it's a 2-block walk from our house, hard to beat. But tonight, after listening to him scream at our waitress, and seeing her in tears, I decided that I probably won't return. It's really too bad, since I generally like to support independent, local businesses. This man needs to get some help! I wanted to speak to Richard tonight about his treatment of employees, but I was afraid he might take it out on her. Very sad.

Great patio. Decent service. Food - nothing to write home about. Chips are really unevenly salted - one will be bland, the next will make you wanna drink lots of beer. The guacamole was okay, but bland. I had a chalupa - just beans and cheese lettuce (no meat that night). The beans are oddly seasoned, or maybe just overseasoned. Not bad, just not my flavor. My husband's quesadilla looked like a burrito and had not been grilled the way it should have been. He liked the flavor, but it otherwise was not special. The prices seem a little too high to me.

I don't get it. I'll start with the positive. Richards has a nice patio area, and the drinks are priced right. This would be a good place to come and have a few drinks and maybe some chips and guacamole. As far as eating dinner...I won't be back. We ate here last Saturday night at 7:00pm. There was one other table occupied which should have been my first clue. Looking at the menu I noticed that all of the food was expensive, so I was expecting something great. First, Chips and Salsa $6. The dinners started at $13 and went up from there. They did offer a combo plate, so I thought I could share a combo plate with my daughter. Sure, but an extra plate cost $4. If you want something on the side, they will charge you for that item as a side dish (side dishes started at 2.95+) now I'm afraid to ask for anything special. Anyway, the food came. My chicken burrito was the size of the kids Burrito at Ajuua (no joke). Tortilla, shredded Chicken, Cheese (lots of cheese) covered with green sauce. Nothing special! Chips and salsa, 2 beers, 2 burrito & taco combo plates and a mushroom burrito (vegi) with 1 slice of cake to share $72 + tip. Richard, if you are going to charge that much for food it has to be amazing and/or different. I just don't get it, but good luck.

I gotta say, I love the location, and the ambiance, and the food, and the margs, but the service here is... so... damn... SLOW. I've waited up to 30 minutes to have my appetizer order taken. Another 20 for drinks. Yet another 25 for food. It's just painful. The food is great and fresh when it comes out but I think they are just in way over their heads regardless of whether there are 10 tables full, or 3 tables full. It's a fine line between being someone who can cook good food, and someone who can do that AND operate an eatery. I've been here about 6 or 7 times and always love what I eat, but just can't keep going and waiting for ages to get my huge burrito or mango chicken enchiladas (those things are seriously delicious). They also are not willing to make concessions for food allergies or dietary restrictions, which is disappointing, especially if you aren't told that when you place the order and have to wait for an hour or more to find out that your plate isn't actually going to come out because the chef simply refuses to make the dish without a certain ingredient. So yeah. If you're willing to overlook some of the flaws or be VERY patient, it's a good place. But if I am going to spend money eating out, I'd rather it be more expedient.

Good margaritas and good atmosphere. I really wish this could be the great neighborhood hang out it has the potential to be. Unfortunately the service is not good, the policies are strange, and the food is not good enough to make up for all the shortcomings.

Very sad.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
