I've only been here late-night when the somewhat limited bar menu is served, as this is one of the only places one can grab a bite after 11p in Oakland. Most recently, I came with a friend after the (largely lacking) Alanis Morrissette concert at the Paramount -- a great choice, considering it's only a couple of blocks away. The cocktails are delicious. I've never had a bad one -- pricey as they may be -- but the Blood Orange Margarita is superlative. Concocted with a blood orange puree, one hundred percent blue agave tequila, Cointreau (I believe), and a splash of OJ, it's perfection. Another that comes to mind is the East Bay Iced Tea, though I typically order that with Mandarin Blossom Hangar One (instead of Buddha's Hand, which I find bitter). The fries are deserving of every bit of praise they receive. Absolutely delicious -- perfectly crisp with a delicate interior. The secret, as I was told by one of the chefs, is the blanching of the fresh-cut potatoes in the oil at a lower heat before deep frying them. Most fresh-cut fries at other establishments lack -- soggy, limp, impersonable. These fries, however, were diplomatic, statesman-like, sponge-worthy. The mac-and-cheese (without bacon) is also very good. It's made with a bechemel sauce in addition to what I believe are four different cheeses. It's rich and creamy with first-rate ingredients. It doesn't bring me to the edge and beyond, however, so it does lack that yum factor that makes me dream about the reunion of such flavours in my mouth. My biggest reservation about Luka's -- and the principal basis for this three-star rating -- is the ambiance. It boasts an excellent location with attractive hours in a much-needed location, but it's not a warm environment. I feel like I'm in a warehouse when I'm there. It's like a run-down former meat-packing district space. It's not industrial-chic -- which I'd understand (and like) -- it's just open, impersonal space, cold, uninviting, with little appeal or intimacy. I don't go to Luka's more often essentially for this reason even though I live close-by. Otherwise, for me, this would likely be a more regular destination instead of the one-or-two times per year . . . when I'm leaving the Paramount at 11p and want to grab a drink and/or a bite with a friend.
Three stars to start after one visit. It could go up if I were a frequent flyer. My friend and I went here searching for a mellow night to continue celebrating the completion of her Master's from SF State. The restaurant/lounge feels more like a restaurant that stays open late. If you can muscle your way past the bar you'll find hidden and lightly occupied booths/tables. Just beyond that is a step down to play pool. The place is clean and decorated fairly well, but somehow I can't escape a feeling that it was once a diner. Our server was delightful and great to clarify what some of the dishes were on the menu (alerting my fish disliking friend that the artichoke came with raw fish). The food - meh. It seems like it's a cross between casual and upscale, achieving neither very successfully. The fries are done well, but reminded my friend of when Burger King, or was it Jack in the Box, redid their fries. We both found the dipping sauces dull and flavorless. Some sort of chipotle aioli maybe that was just heavy on the spice and a pesto aioli or something maybe? I can't recall the names, but the green one just tasted like dull mayonnaise. I also can't remember what the recent grad had to say about the Hush-puppies. Dinner is served until 10:30pm. I ordered the beignets. Small bite sized pastry puffs covered in powdered sugar and paired with 3 dipping sauces of Lemon, A berry (I believe raspberry) and chocolate. The chocolate almost seemed to have a hint of coffee flavor to me, or was just burnt. The raspberry - ok, and the lemon superb. All in all, the food is highly priced and not the greatest. On the drink front you can get half of bottles of Champagne during happy hour (the cheapest being $40! That means only $20!) and they have a great drink menu. After our libations and nibbles we sauntered over to the club portion of it and I really enjoyed it. The set up seems as confused as the menu... like it doesn't know if it's a bar, a club, a lounge or a restaurant, but the music and diverse crowd makes all of that irrelevant. You'll find all ages, races, sexualities, genders here. You know what's missing? Attitude. No bad attitudes found here! Just people out to dance and enjoy themselves and share in the happiness. The music was excellent and done by a live DJ looking down on the dance floor. For a music lover who likes a variety I can say I didn't know anything he played towards the end of the night, but it was all excellent.

Hip hop karaoke on Monday nights? YES. I been here once. Burgers + fries are AWESOME. Very tasty indeed. The place has got an uptown vibe to it. It does get kinda crowded + busy at night but I think its because the music is dope (Oakland Faders hold it down), food is good, full bar, dancefloor +they got pool tables in the back... Shit, I'd hang out here. I think there is a cover charge and the food is kinda pricey (hence the uptown-ness) but damn I had a good time here.

Once I was there with a group for lunch and we waited an hour (after ordering) before any of us got our food. My husband had to get his to go because he had to go back to work. I was pissed as hell at the waitress for her ineptitude and the establishment for its indifference - comping his sandwich would have gone a long way to undo the damage. I contemplated writing a nasty review... but I didn't. Why? Because that is just one bad experience out of dozens of other positive experiences I've had at Lukas. That one experience didn't stop me from going back there time after time. I did think long and hard about how I would review Luka's and in the end I decided to give it proper credit. Sure I've dealt with clueless, sometime even rude hostesses there and received below average service at times but I still give Luka's props for what I believe it brings to Oakland. Long before all the hip and fancy restaurants and bars started popping up in Oakland, Luka's took a chance on a space that was once a sad Hofbrau in a sketchy neighborhood and ended up transforming the area itself. Luka's range and diversity reflects Oakland. Their food is genuine and thoughtful. From the mussels served 3 ways to the unctuous grown-up mac and cheese, the food is upscale yet comforting. It's a great place for drinks and appetizers, a perfect spot for lunch or dinner, and their weekend brunch (can you say fried poussin and waffles?) is a well kept secret. I've yet to have a bad meal there. Their wine list is short but sweet and reasonable (and 1/2 price on Sundays) and their beer options are extensive (Belgian beers on tap - hello?). I've also done my share of boozing there when the place turns into a club scene after 10 - it's definitely a scene, a very DIVERSE scene and it's fun, even for an off-the-market awkward Asian mom like me. Luka's is so cool. It's so Oakland. How can I give it any less than 5 stars?

This is a review update for a Wednesday Night Salsa Lessons and Dancing. The two instructors were really great! Went over serveral basic steps and timing. And at the end of 45 minutes we partnered up! It is held in the room to the left . Ample amount of space to get your turns on! The well versed in salsa dancing came out that night and it felt like a really safe place to come and practice here! But sometimes it takes a really good DJ to play all the right salsa songs. not all salsa songs sound the same! i'd probably come back here with a friend to practice dancing together. oh yeah and I had a chicory salad that night!!

I came to Luka's for some much needed homie time...both the actual city and a fer reals homie. They have Chimay on tap, yo! Whut whuuuuut!!!! They had the Lakers vs. Suns game on, too! (side note: Shaq isn't doing so well..dawg's gettin' old) Dinner..meh. My dinner was scalding hot and homie's was cold. The tables were really close too but that didn't matter, our dining neighbors were hella friendly. Don't talk about anything too embarrassing though..your shit'll get overheard. I'd roll back up into this mug though....especially cuz I want to check out their nightly live music. I'm all over that....booze and music is bomb ass! LOVED this place! Was in town for business and craving oysters. Service was excellent and so was the food!! There were several types of oysters to choose from. Honestly, everything on the menu looked really tasty. It was hard to make a decision. Another positive is you can really tell the food is fresh. There are not 20 or more entrees to read through which is usually a good sign. My waiter recommended a wine and I loved it! Everyone was so nice. Will definitely be bringing my staff here for our next work dinner. Thank you!!!

Been at Luka's twice, both time i just got drinks. Didn't get a chance to try their food, i was busy enjoying the dance floor. Good Music, Good drinks, Good people, that's all that matters! But the reason why i didn't give it 5stars, wells one of the bartender was rude because I kept coming back for more drinks with friends. She rolled her eyes and snapped whenever my friends or I order a drink. RUDE! So i didn't tip her and I tipped her co-worker generously needless to say, she got PISSED off & decided to confront me. WOW really?? how professional is that? If she wasn't so rude while helping me, she would have gotten a tip. Its that simple. shessssh!

I was a regular little piggy here a few weeks ago, getting what turned out to be a not-too-shabby bite before the Band of Horses show at the Fox Theater. Deeply impressed by: - Delirium Tremens on tap - Spectacular Belgian fries w/ myriad dipping sauces - Gigantic seafood platter, complete with a whole Dungeness crab. I just had a really nice dinner and Luka's. My server was friendly and aware. The food was pretty darn good, and the alcohol was flowin'. Started off with an "Effen Gimlet". Vodka, lime, cucumber/mint simple syrup. Sounded kinda weird, but that's why I got it. I loved the interplay of the cucumber and the lime...and the alcohol. You should try it. Starters were great as well. Oysters Rockefeller were salty and I like that. The tuna tartare was off-the-heezy. I was totally cumfused when the plate arrived. Something resembling a fritter was perched atop my tartare, perched atop some kind of crispy flatbread. Was this what I ordered? Yes. The fritter looking thing was actually a fried egg. Yeah, I think they soft-boiled an egg, peeled it, breaded it, and fried it. Where have you been all my life fried egg? The tuna was simply dressed with onion, cilantro, I think, and other stuff. What else do you really need to do to Ahi? Alltogether with the flatbread, it was fantastic. For entree, I selected the "Bourride." Really good and seasonal seafood stew. Thanks for giving me leeks, fava beans, fresh english peas, and artichokes, all of which are really good and in season right now. The seafood cookery could have been improved by not using mini shrimp, which were unfortunately overcooked. With some prawns and a little more salt, and it would have been a 10 fo sho. I did go way overboard soaking up the broth with bread, but it was worth it. Mini beignets for dessert. Little pillows of love dipped in raspberry coulis...bomb. Could have been sweeter, but I didn't really need more carbs, so I'll give a pass. My only complaints are the lack of espresso and dessert wine beside port. Coffee was good and strong, so I can't really hate, but I really like a shot of espresso after a nice meal. Get the caffeine intake over with in 30 seconds. On the dessert wine front, I think every restaurant in the world needs to stock Tokaj. Hungarian liquid apricot honey...the best. You got to offer some white dessert wine. Yes, port for chocolate, but for beignets? I don't think so. This place is a little loud, so don't come here for a romantic date. Parking was easy. Excellent beer selection. I think they convert into a pseudo dance club at night with a cover on the weekends. Worth checking out if you're in the area.

Bloody Mary: Not much flavor. All you really taste is the horseraddish Belgian Fries: GREAT! (mostly the reason why we came here) Great dipping sauces and and probably a good hangover cure LOL! Luka Omelet: eggs with smoked trout and creme freshe, a side of grits and toast. Was just ok. The omelet was a bit on the runny side and the portion of grits was a bit much. Update: (2/09/07) Ok, after a second go, I admit it. Luka's wins for Oakland's best burger. Perfectly done how I asked, incredibly tasty and good meat (Niman Ranch), perfect size, on a nice bun. And the fries are really damn good and plentiful. I agree with Brad L. about the ridiculous $1.50 price for grilled onions. (Hell, at Val's you get a whole damn plate of grilled onions for less, enough to feed 4!) But I got them anyway. Mmm. Service was *much* better on this visit, perhaps because it was earlier (6 pm on a Saturday), or who knows why. So, I'm raising the original 3-star review to 4 stars. Original review: (10/07) My girlfriend and I headed over to Luka's the other night, after an evening class down the block at the East Bay Meditation Center. We were starving and it was after 9 in the middle of the week. We prayed that Luka's kitchen would still be open. Not that Theravadin Buddhists are all that into prayer, but in this case, our prayers were answered. And, in fact, the kitchen is open til like 10:30, which is a minor miracle. The bar was hopping, and the dining area in back was sparsely populated with what seemed to be local regulars. Nice. We were slightly overwhelmed with the beer variety, but it was clear that beer is one of the main attractions, so we dove in and ordered some interesting ones. Yum. The food was a mixed bag. I loved my burger, and the fries are among the best I've ever had. The supposedly fancy mac and cheese, however, was reminiscent of lumpy wheatpaste -- all white sauce, seemingly no cheese, bland as hell. Sad and surprising for the price and description. I enjoyed the beet salad, but I wouldn't write home about it. Service was friendly and forgetful. I generally am quick to forgive people forgetting my request for "no tomatoes" -- even though I specify that I have a bonafide allergy. It's rare that a restaurant gets it and leaves off the tomatoes. They just can't be bothered to make a fresh setup, apparently. And Luka's is no exception here. But they entirely forgot one of the items we ordered. Had it been crowded, it could see being that forgetful. But no. So, one star off for mediocre service. I'll go back. I'll try some other items. I'll have the fries again and maybe the burger. I'll be glad it's there after 9 pm on a weekday. And that's what I have to say about Luka's for dinner. Fat-friendly, I'd say yes it is. I was comfy there. And I'm about as fat as they come.

As I've told chef Jake, Luka's has got to have the best burger in the East Bay. And this is coming from a recently reformed decade-long vegetarian. Too bad my system doesn't like meat (yet) as much as I like it... I love that you can call Luka's and get a reservation -- at least on a weeknight -- just a half hour from the phone call. Sure beats standing three-deep at the bar hoping you can get the bartender's attention! Speaking of the bar, Luka's is the only place I know of that has Maredsous on tap. I like the Trappist, but last time I looked they only had it for something like $13 in a big bottle... Not that I shy away from paying that much for a good glass of wine sometimes. Priorities, people, priorities! Luka's has a good deal on wine on Sundays -- 1/2 off a bottle, although that probably just makes up for the markup! :-p I need to check out my friend Raz's bi-monthly Thursday night party there, Resonant, although I have a hard time associating Luka's with more than drinks and/or dinner...
I love Sunday brunch here! For my taste buds they serve the best chicken and waffles and beignets in the Bay Area. However, their other dishes are yummy as well. I'm a fan of the Eggs Benedict as well. They have a great selection of beer and great tasting specialty drinks. And, I have no complaints on service. Unfortunately, I have only been here for Sunday brunch a few times. I need to come back and try their regular menu. When I do, I will update my review.

I have officially been convinced that if you want true hip hop and dancing that Oakland is really the best place to go. As much as traveling over the bridge can screw you over if you don't drive it is work the trek out to try some amazing clubs like Lukas. I have been here about four times and each time the DJ's played some amazing sets of Bay Area and main stream hip hop. I haven't heard this since I was in Texas and it was a welcome surprise. There are sometimes small lines outside Lukas but they do a good job of getting people in with little to no hassle which I always appreciate from bouncers who are an essential part of the clubbing experience. There is a varying cover charge but it's never too expensive like the 20 dollars covers of SF. Once inside you walk immediately into the bar and dinner area straight ahead. It is usually crowded with many people option to spend their night in this side of the club as opposed to the dance floor. Once you edge your way to the bar there are some decent drinks but nothing was ever really strong which was disappointing for the cost but I don't drink a lot in clubs so if that's a big turnoff be warned. Further back there are tables for larger groups and dinners if you choose that route. There are no VIP areas which is great. As you make your way around the circle you will pass the lonely desolate bathrooms. Seriously it could be the creepiest bathroom set up I have seen in the bay area. It's a long dark hallway with black lights that leads to two bathrooms side by side. Women, go with a buddy is all I am saying. As is always a danger the crowd that an all hip hop location can bring can be slightly shady. It doesn't have to be but it can I think everyone can be realistic that things can get out of hand like Cellar across the bay. You go with hopes of a good time and usually it is but there is an opportunity for something to break out so be warned. After you pass the bathrooms it's on to the dance floor and this is where Luka's really shines. The food was great when we went but once that was out of the way the second room opens into a dance club and it's such a great mix of people and music. Luka's like many places in Oakland skews older like over 25 which a welcome relief from the "are you sure you are 21" feeling you have in SF. I am not a bay area native but felt like one when bouncing around to hyphy songs and mac dre with real Oakland patrons. The dance floor never gets too crowded even though it's a smaller space which is a number one on my list of dance venues. The music keeps the party going all night and you can't help but leaving feeling like you got your money's worth if you go on a Friday or Saturday night here no matter how many people show up. Bring your hip hop loving friends and start "feelin yo self" in one of the premier hip hop locations in the Bay Area.

One of the only places I know that is considered more the club-ish bar scene, but has a rather diverse food menu. I should note that is IS a restaurant by day. The bartenders are always friendly and good with recognizing repeat business. There are Djs on some nights (always on the weekend) and it can get VERY crowded. There is a dance floor (though not very big) and also a pool table where you can challenge the local sharks if that's your thing. For what it is, Lukas does it's job pretty well and has a nice diverse crowd. They have drinks, music and a dance floor without the typical nightlife trouble some places seem to attract with that particular mix.

I could write about the good food, chill vibe and good service of this place but instead I'll tell you about one meal here and one staff member that honestly changed my life. My fiance and I were having drinks here last night when I did something insanely stupid: I left an envelope full of money here. Not some nickle and dime stuff.... I left $16,000 (YES SIXTEEN HUNDRED DOLLARS) here. I don't know if the drinks were just that potent or my brain fell straight down my head and out of my flat Asian ass, but I left enough money to buy a Cambodian orphan behind at a restaurant in downtown Oakland. To make matters worse, that money was being used for our wedding next month, and we only flew to the Bay to get married in front of my parents after living in Thailand for the last four years. I realized it was lost and spent a brutally sad day crying and consoling myself with fitting as many hot dogs in my mouth as possible (just like any normal human does, right?). Then I got a call from the day manager (thanks Rick) saying that the night manager (aka my fairy godmother, Ziggy from Quantum leap and Hans Solo rolled into one) found the money and locked it up in the safe. What kind a beautiful soul would find $1,600 in down town Oakland and return it to a complete stranger?!?! Well, his name is Reid and I owe him more gratitude than I could ever muster in a Yelp review. People throw around the term "restored my faith in humanity" too loosely. You can't just throw that shit around. A great sandwich or photos of interracial babies holding hands are great and all.... but real, honest people with big hearts like Reid who do the right thing for people they don't know; that didn't just restore my faith in humanity, it made me want to be a human being worthy of having faith in. If I had found that money, I would have made it rain so hard that umbrella stocks would be at an all time high, but now I will choose a better path. I will smile at the guy who steals my parking spot and laugh it off when I get eye raped on public transit because of every 9,999 insignificant asshole acts, there is one great random act of kindness that wakes up your soul and lights up places in you that had gone dark a long time ago. So again, THANKS REID. I wish I could high five him until my hands fall off or hug him until my busoms turn to old lady mush... but I can't. So please enjoy a meal at Luka's and do it for me. You'll get some good food and the privilege of meeting a good, honest, true example of humanity.

I was told the fried chicken was to die for... well it was so greasy and had no seasoning. Totally gross. I am a HUGE grits fan. What ever that is they are calling grits is so awful. I am going right back to Mama's Royal Cafe for my grits. The collard greens were to salty and the portion was very small. The service was OK... Their drinks look amazing but at $10 a pop don't think I will be trying them anytime soon. The place is over all over priced. It is just not that cool and I feel like I am pay tourist prices and shit. I will leave this place to the yuppies. Okay so I guess there are cocktails in Oakland worth $10 a pop.... I went back and the cocktails alone are enough to give this place another star and I tried the Hush Puppies and they were to die for!

the attraction here is/was the $1 off the draft beer and $1 oysters on mondays. assume this is still true now. they have a fine selection of belgium beers and the garlic fries are an attraction with the three dipping sauces. they serve a pretty decent burger ((?) here. juicy with chips and dills. my last time there was a bummer. i ordered my garlic fries first and the inattentive bartender gave it to another couple who came in 10 minuted later and didn't order anything else. i haven't been back. my taste for garlic fries and $1 oyster had lapsed.

Luka was a stray dog, and now it is a restaurant, or so the story goes. It is also a music venue, casual bar, taproom, restaurant and it likes to wax nostalgic about it's predecessor the Hofbrau with strategically placed memorabilia. Luka's has a really good mac and cheese and a decent beer/cocktail menu but what drew me here was its promise of an amazing burger, because, if you don't know by now, a cheeseburger would be on the menu should I someday do something very very bad and find myself on death row. Well, let me clarify. Luka's burger would NOT be on that menu. Nope, sorry, don't believe the hype. It is mediocre at best. Also, you really shouldn't believe I would do something bad enough to land me on death row in the first place . Or should you???

The Boyfriend and I live really close so we're here all the time. I lovelovelove $1 oysters on Monday nights. There's nothing better than a dozen oysters and a cold beer to start off the week! Luka's also has a pretty extensive beer selection. As was noted in other reviews, the burger is amazing! It's always so juicy and definitely worth the price. The fries are also an amazing side. You should order it separately to get the three different kinds of sauce to dip them in! I usually get the Crab Dungeness Salad which is always fresh. Just a note: don't take any of this salad home as leftovers. It gets soggy, salty, and just plain gross. The service is not the best. I don't come here to have the server's undivided attention because I won't get it. Even one of the hosts is really weird and kinda creepy - I don't think he ever blinks and he never smiles. His tone never changes and he always looks like we're a huge inconvenience for walking in the door. Overall, this is a great place for a casual dinner. I try to stay away on the weekend nights because it just gets so loud and crowded that I can't even hear myself think.

I love this place - it's a great lunch, dinner, happy hour, or late drinks spot. (Haven't been there for brunch). Great ambiance - the bar, restaurant, lounge and pool room are all fun. I would go weekly if the meals were a little less pricey. I also really like that Luka the dog is painted on one of the walls (look up to the left when you walk in). I think the burger is as good as the hype, and the fries and specials are always good. I have really enjoyed the golden beet salad, mac & cheese, soup and sorbet. They have a good selection of beers on tap, a good prosecco, and a great bloody mary, which is always key for me. I'll be back soon!

I just had an culinary experience so miraculously hedonistic and artistically inspired that I am adding this place to the List. Other than Ethnic Food I think there could be a place for Comfort Food in a Hip Environs. Luka's Taproom & Lounge 2221 Broadway (Grand and Broadway) Oakland CA 94612 510 451-4677 Luka's is named after the owner's dog (artfully displayed above the bar)and one must remember that the owner was an artist (I surmise) and the very first business to set up shop on one of the four corners we now know as Uptown. Ozumo, Plum, Vo, Mua, Nex, Betty's, Pican, Flora and Hawker Fare are all nearby. But this place does something better than the others. Luka's is a culinary destination, but also a fun bar with TV's showing the Stanford-Oregon football game. Luka's serves a hip version of comfort food in an upscale pub&bar setting. I recommend you sit at the bar - it engages and sets up the experience. Sure enough the barkeep (Eric) makes the best Mojito en el mundo ( I swear) and we order the Moules Mariniere (there is a Belgian/French twist in all of this and the braised fennel gave it the pastis hint), a rucola/beet salad and what is now officially confirmed as the Best Burger in the East Bay. Luka's is the sui generis artists cooking for artists environment. Eric made the Mojito so savory yet smoothly delicious that it became the ne plus ultra of all bar drinks. I ordered another and learned the recipe from Eric right in front of us (how cool). The chefs put out Chez Panisse type salads and the world's best burger bar none. Each dish was the epitome of hedonistic pleasure and sheer culinary bliss. Details like the acme bread and what I am sure is a European plugra butter also make the difference . Even the water with the lemon touch became the best one ever. And the clafouti for desert only confirmed my impression of a chef and bartender being 100% on during a Saturday Night scene. The key was sitting at the bar and breaking down the distance between the kitchen and servers and creating a unique experience, much like a Street Food exchange. Note-Luka's has $1.00 oysters on Mondays until they run out, a Happy Hour daily and 50% off all wine bottles on Sunday. Trend - proximity to street food via bar seating or a chef's table Insider Trading- being in touch with the server or bartender which allows for a visual cue on things coming out of the kitchen and invites recommendation, which can steer you to a blissfully successful ordering experience. Eric wryly said "a good selection" after I ask him for the low down on some dish and accepted his guidance. So engage in a repartee with a good chef or bartender who wants the client to recognize his skills. Plus how would I have learned that he had lived in Miami and perfected the mojito there. His Mojito was powerful and artistic, savory and balanced and just bonito to look at. All I needed next was to float into one of their DJ lounges and begin my Salsa Land Dancing Fantasy.

Luka's was the setting where I had my first date with my husband. I have such fond memories being there, and literally there was a point I think I was going there about once a week. The burgers here are amazing! Always cooked exactly the way I want, medium rare or medium depending on my mood. IF you get fries, you HAVE TO ask for their special dipping sauces: chipotle ketchup, aioli and another fantastic one which is escaping me right now. (But the tatste itself is super memorable!) I've also had the Mac & Cheese which is sinful, the different NY steaks which always have a special jous in different variations. They also do a great cold seafood platter with crab, shrimp and oysters All superb and very fresh. The migonette that goes with this is always consistently great. OMG, and dessert is just ridiculous, especially the chocolate bignets. This is a great place to go to especially if you are going to a concert at the Paramount which is just steps away. Parking is hard at times, but usually within a couple blocks; us Californians sure are lazy aren't we?!?

Food is great, the wait isn't. Also, a bit over-priced, but overall good ambiance and relatively good service- except for the passively-snooty hostess. In short, stopped by for a quick bite and a drink- that took 2.5 hrs, so not ok! Thank goodness I was in good company and that the food made it worth it- puffy beignet pillows are a yummy dessert!

Complaints: fries can be too salty, they serve fine beers in thin-stemmed wine glasses which ruins their body, on a recent visit their $1 monday oysters were SO TINY i don't even know how they were caught, and our waitress was a bit.... absent. But somehow, everytime I go to Luka's, I have a good time. It's a good atmosphere, the dining room is amiably crammed, and the $11 burger is tasty. I would say it's worth a shot. But order a lot of oysters. you never know which ones are going to be infinitesimal.

3 stars for my average of experiences here. Up until last night, the first few times here were great (easy 4 stars). Cool vibe, good beers, and awesome food. Last night, however, I took a group of 7 friends there who were from out of town. Long story short, I was embarrassed to have been the one to suggest Lukas! They took FOREVER to do anything. And once the food got there (after almost an HOUR), the burgers were cold and inconsistently cooked. Beers also took about 20 minutes to get, even though it was only moderately busy. We would have not left a tip if they didn't automatically add a 18% gratuity on parties of 6 or more. Lukas, get your act together, you are breaking my heart!

You know, when I schlep across the country to spend quality time w/friends and family, I hope that they will point me to some awesome places to eat. Luka's is definitely one of those places. We started w/sharing some of their delicious hand-cut fries. Cooked and seasoned perfectly w/3 different dipping sauces. Since it was Monday, I had to go for the $1 oysters and got 10 for myself. No one else in our party enjoyed oysters, so I had to go it alone. These were fresh, sweet, thick and tasty Skookum oysters from Washington State. So good! My husband had the tuna tartare appetizer and he said (direct quote), "You got to give kudos to anyone who has the balls to deep fry an avocado." He was pleased. My sister tried the field to family airline chicken and was gushing about how good it was. Our friend had the basil gnocchi and was equally pleased. I shared the baked mac & cheese w/my husband and thought the cheeses were great, but couldn't taste the leeks (and I love leeks). Can't wait to go back on my next visit to Oakland!

What a beautiful place! I went on a Sunday night and really enjoyed the dance floor! Although there were not many people dancing, the DJ was great at mixing up the music when we stepped on the floor. I had the large fries and I must say I was expecting more. It tasted kind of plain. Everyone likes the fries because of the sauce but I was not thrilled for $6.00. The Sex on the Beach was great but my Lemon Drop was a little bit too strong and not as lemony as it should have been. The two bartenders acted like they did not know how to move fast enough. This place has potential but since there is already a following, I doubt they will change much.

Luka's = 46 dollars and 76 cents for a hamburger and fries and four beers. I was kind of expecting a dive bar. When I looked at their website I saw that they had beers on tap and bar food but I didn't really look at their prices. I ended up splitting a burger with a friend and paying 8 bucks per beer. It was nice-ish, but I felt like the food was overpriced for what you were getting. The cheapest thing on the menu was bean and ham hock soup and it was still 8 or 9 bucks. Yes, the waiters wear all black. Yes, the lighting is good. Yes, the tables are made of real wood and the colors are sparse and tasteful. Yes, there was the beginnings of salsa dancing in the back and a pool table... Yes, the crowd was eclectic and diverse. But was my burger and four beers worth 47 dollars? I'm not so sure. My server was a little on the annoyed side despite our lack of annoyance. Luka's = ok, but probably not repeatable.

I've got to say this is a great go to place for good cocktails and happy hour prices. I give it 3 - stars for this! The food is another story. I've eaten here on a about 3 occasion, the fries are very good, but really that is there only claim to fame on the food. The food isn't bad but it isn't good either. On my last visit I ordered the Clam Chowder ($11)I must admit my expectations were high, could this be the possibly the best soup i've ever had? I mean for $11 I expected perfection. Well perfection was not what I received! I was really disappointed with my potato soup, because that is what it was.. well with the addition of about 6 fresh clams. Bummed. I know now that the best part of Luka's is the first Friday events and the cocktails.

We have visited Luka's many times for lunch and they do not disappoint, as long as you know what to order. What I recommend on the menu are the $1 Oysters (every Monday), Spicy Thai mussels, Chicken Sandwich with Belgium Fries, Beet and Apple Salad, Mac and Cheese, and the Chocolate Fondant. Who can go wrong with $1 oysters? They are delicious and usually pretty fresh. My only gripe is that once I ate an oyster that was not cleaned very well and I bit into a small rock! Hence the 4 stars. The Spicy Thai mussels are to die for. I am not a seafood person and prior to this dish the only seafood I ate was fried crab. This dish changed all that and now I am in love with mussels. The dish is served with the mussels in their shell in a pool of sauce. It's not very spicy but it does have an asian hint to it and a hint of thai curry. Use bread to soak up the sauce and you will have an orgasm in your mouth. The chicken sandwich is moist, juicy, crispy, and is delivered to you so hot and fresh it's unbelievable. It makes me wonder why people go to Bake Sale Bettys across the street for their soggy and cold fried chicken. Anyway, add the the best tasting fries you have ever tasted and you will forget all the problems of your day. The Beet and Apple Salad is fresh and tasty. No oily dressing and it makes you feel great if you are watching your figure. The Mac and Cheese is the best I have tried. Crispy exterior and cheesy interior with just enough of flavor to balance everything. It also comes with a side of greens that pairs extremely well with it. Last is the desert, the Chocolate Fondant. Hot moist chocolate, paired with cold ice cream and a caramel cookie. This my friend, is bliss. I just wished for $7 bucks the portions were just a bit larger.

An extra star for the extremely personable service, stellar drinks, and putting me in the position that I just couldn't say no to anything that came to the table, ahem, dessert that is, and that extra drink? I'm kind of on the fence about this one....two stars might be harsh but it doesn't really deserve three. I wandered in here to meet a friend for dinner/drinks on a Thursday. The hostess was friendly and accommodating and said that everything in the dining room was reserved, but we could get the full dinner menu in the lounge. So we went to the lounge and were accosted by a brusque, pushy server. Ordered a couple drinks and a light dinner. Were too scared of the server to hang around and order another. Ran away and went home. However the food was good. The girls got salads (meager but pretty) and the boy got Belgian-style fries, which apparently means that they are served in a cup, not on a plate. Good selection of beer but nothing really impressive.

Luka's is a very NY kind of feel joint! I went there for the Halloween costume party and had a Blast! It was eclectic, soulful & I loved the artwork in the gallery which by the way doubles as a fabulous dance floor! The DJ booth is up above the dance floor with a birds eye view of the party! The service of the barkeeps was quick and the drinks were on point. But I do have to take into account that I am a 2 drink wonder. Check out the pics from the night! I am the Deadly Nurse Naughty! There were other nurses too, and maybe even more naughty! The costumes were creative and it was a great place to be! I have yet to eat here but I am planning on coming back. The dining area looked very spacious and the food I saw was looking fabulous. One day I will come back and update after I eat there!

Earlier in the day, however, it's easier, and well-worth the drive downtown to sample one of the many beers (I'm a sucker for the Belgians!) and one of the best burgers and fries to be found on mother earth. I shoot pool at Luka's and have since 2008. I pretty much only eat the Luka's burgers. I over the years have eaten pretty much everything on their menu but I like the burgers best. So at lunch, happy hour or just late night Luka's is a friendly, fun place with bartenders and a wait staff that is ready to please. If you're a hard drinker Luka's is a good place. Four quarters will get you a game of pool in the back. I saw the last two championships won by Kobi at Lukas. I saw UofH win a bowl game a couple of days ago in the back while shooting pool and sipping on a whiskey sour. Fair prices, strong pour, good place. Street parking so BART is a good choice.

One of my favorite things about Oakland - good date spot; on both nights I've been, there was loud ass dancing next door, which was cool. Everything on the menu is great - try putting bacon inside the little pillow things (desert) - it's really good, but I can't take credit for the idea. And of course, good beer selection. I'm in constant pursuit of a bar / restaurant to call home. I want to have a place to visit over and over again - like a good friend's mom's house, a place you can count on for good food, good conversation, good service. Too bad Luka's isn't such a place - I had such high hopes for it. The burgers are decent - and are rumored to be the East Bay's best (/shrug). I like that the fries come with three dips - but it annoys me that they put them in a cone in a glass which just feels like I'm getting cheated. The bar service is quick so nothing to complain about - but the waiters ... hmmmm ... well, the waiter was either on drugs or had just given his 2 weeks notice and was going to go join a dotcom that is pre-IPO. He just didnt' seem to care ... and when you've got a table of 5 beautiful friendly women (some coy, some flirtatious, some sassy) how can you not at least be somewhat engaged? I'd probably head back here again because it wasn't a tragic experience and there does seem to be a lack of cool places in Oakland ... but next time, I'll stick to beer ordered direct from the bar.

I have fond memories of this place because my wife and i used to go there regularly (pre-kid days). She used to live on 23rd and we would just walk there. The surrounding neighborhood is not the greatest. We've heard of people being mugged around this place. But the drinks are good, there is a distinct unpretentious Oakland vibe. Anyone who likes the bar scene in Oakland should check it out.

The Belgian fries and multiple dipping sauces ARE really that good. The mac'n'cheese is amazing. You might think, how fancy and delicious could you make mac'n'cheese? Fabulous good I tell ya. Creamy underneath and slightly crunchy on top makes for a delicious meal all in itself. Here is some key advice to the kitchen and managerial staff: (1) By now, Oakland has really good restaurants. You have competitors who cook much better food, at much better prices. Folks, if you want decent burgers and salads, along with much, much better service and prices, walk across the street to Umami's (Franklin and 21st); (2) Back-space room: there's a decently sized screen up for sports events. For heaven's sake, if you're going to put that up, put the volume on. Folks in the back room come for the games. You are a freakin' restaurant, not a dictatorship. Take into account what your customers request; and (3) Restaurants are about respecting your customers. Luka's lost at least 12 regular customers tonight, due to the horrible manager on-site (not sure what his name is, but he was there at 7 p.m. -- shouted at customers, and was incredibly rude. At one point, he told customers to "deal with it..." wtf?). I understand if you're a regular at Luka's. I've been there. l loved to come to Luka's five years ago when the food was decent and the people who worked there knew what they were doing. Today, it's a lousy restaurant, with bad food and service, and bad prices. Folks are honestly better off going across the street to another restaurant or somewhere else in Oakland.

We held a company dinner here and had plenty of space for everyone to mingle. The only thing missing were tables large enough for more than two dinner plates. They arranged a nice buffet for us and the food stayed warm and tasted good. Delicious chocolate chip cookies were provided too!

I suppose I'm a bit biased because I met my future wife here, but I've got a big ol' soft spot in my heart for Luka's Taproom. And even though I can't drink beer anymore (hops allergy), their full bar makes this a complete experience. When we come to eat here, their burgers and mac 'n cheese are my regular choices. The salads are well sized, even for the manliest of men. Luka's is great for lunch, dinner, or weekend brunch.

I've been coming here for years, LOVE $1 OYSTER MONDAYS! I love how they clean each oyster without leaving any grit inside, also making sure they separate the oyster from the shell to ensure easier access! I could slurp down 2 dozen oysters in one sitting! Yes, that's how good they are. Add a little of the champagne mignonette, a dash of tobasco, a squirt of lemon and a dash of salt and OH MY GOODNESS you're close to heaven! However...everything else is terrible! From drinks, to service, ambiance and food!!! Don't even bother! I've tried almost everything off the menu...you can't do wrong with their fries I suppose. Most of the wait staff look like their on some sort of drug which makes the experience a bit more awkward, not only that they are unattentive and give attitude when they're too lazy to give you what you asked for. I will give them 3 generous stars for the oysters! Wish I could give them 5!

Very pleasant service. Our server remembered that it was my friend's birthday and added a candle to our dessert. The ambiance was nice enough - it was really a city vibe, replete with homeless man bicycling by and then stopping to salivate at my friend's Pork chop. Cool, marble topped, pub style tables for two with high chairs. Wine by the glass was great. The food was awful - I ordered the scallops - completely tasteless with a puree that was meant to have bacon in it. No such luck. Bacon is such a distinctive tasting item that you can definitely taste it, even if it just a little. I was still hungry so I ordered mussels - three options for howy you'd like the mussels prepared. I chose Thai mussels. The taste of the Thai sauce was like peanut butter. Not good at all. The beignets for dessert were decent - the sauces were mediocre. I would never go back.
In case you're unsure if $1 oysters are a good deal... damn straight it is! Even when you go buy your own up in Tomales Bay, it doesn't come down to $1 an oyster, and there, you have to shuck your own. (Obviously extra points for freshness at Tomales Bay) Anyway, $1 oysters, beers, and Belgian fries. Always a good Monday. If you like beets, their seasonal beets salad is usually good with some type of citrus. Their mussels in the bouillabaisse sauce is amazing. You need to ask for bread to soak up all the sauce. Mac and cheese with bacon and mushrooms. So decadent and so comforting.

Sigh, it's with a heavy heart that I write this review. I know, a Yelp review isn't quite that serious, but I had high hopes for here. Out and about in Oakland is always an interesting experience, and there are so many places that are so amazing that you'd be surprised. I came to Luka's to meet some friends, and I was hoping this would be one of those experiences. The place has a nice sized bar and eating area, a pool room, and a dance/club type area. A little bit of everything for your going out needs. First off, I paid a cover. I have such an issue with paying a cover when you'll buy their food while you're there, but that is what it is. $5 in the grand scheme of life isn't awful, but it hurts just the same. The drinks were strong, and the place was pretty empty early in the night, at least on the dance floor side. There was always a group of people playing pool, and the dancing was limited at first, but as it got crowded, it picked up nicely. We ordered some food while dancing, and it was very flavorful so that was a good way to break up all the booze. I think, more than the cover, my biggest problem was that the further on in the night, the more ghetto-douche the clientele became. It wasn't ghetto thug, but more of people posturing way above what they should. Comments became more crude, and it turned into an unpleasant experience. I'd go back during the day for food, or maybe later on for pool, but to stick around would probably be too much if the clientele always holds true. I've only been here late-night when the somewhat limited bar menu is served, as this is one of the only places one can grab a bite after 11p in Oakland. Most recently, I came with a friend after the (largely lacking) Alanis Morrissette concert at the Paramount -- a great choice, considering it's only a couple of blocks away. The cocktails are delicious. I've never had a bad one -- pricey as they may be -- but the Blood Orange Margarita is superlative. Concocted with a blood orange puree, one hundred percent blue agave tequila, Cointreau (I believe), and a splash of OJ, it's perfection. Another that comes to mind is the East Bay Iced Tea, though I typically order that with Mandarin Blossom Hangar One (instead of Buddha's Hand, which I find bitter). The fries are deserving of every bit of praise they receive. Absolutely delicious -- perfectly crisp with a delicate interior. The secret, as I was told by one of the chefs, is the blanching of the fresh-cut potatoes in the oil at a lower heat before deep frying them. Most fresh-cut fries at other establishments lack -- soggy, limp, impersonable. These fries, however, were diplomatic, statesman-like, sponge-worthy. The mac-and-cheese (without bacon) is also very good. It's made with a bechemel sauce in addition to what I believe are four different cheeses. It's rich and creamy with first-rate ingredients. It doesn't bring me to the edge and beyond, however, so it does lack that yum factor that makes me dream about the reunion of such flavours in my mouth. My biggest reservation about Luka's -- and the principal basis for this three-star rating -- is the ambiance. It boasts an excellent location with attractive hours in a much-needed location, but it's not a warm environment. I feel like I'm in a warehouse when I'm there. It's like a run-down former meat-packing district space. It's not industrial-chic -- which I'd understand (and like) -- it's just open, impersonal space, cold, uninviting, with little appeal or intimacy. I don't go to Luka's more often essentially for this reason even though I live close-by. Otherwise, for me, this would likely be a more regular destination instead of the one-or-two times per year . . . when I'm leaving the Paramount at 11p and want to grab a drink and/or a bite with a friend.

A dozen or so of us came in for dinner on a Sunday night. They managed to seat us quickly by the front window. In general, service was friendly, if a tad on the slow side. I had the Tagine of Root Vegetables, which was immensely flavourful. Several of my friends had the hamburger; all complained it was underdone. The Gratinéed "Mac & Cheese" was devoured without comment. But it was devoured. The clam chowder looked fantastic. But it was $11 ... for soup. That was my main complaint about the place. It's simply too pricey. You get very good, but not spectacular food. And friendly, but not exquisite service. But there's not an inexpensive dish on the menu. Even the cheeseburger is $13. For a bar -- even a gastropub -- it's a bit much, especially since this is Oakland and not Manhattan. This is the kind of place that I'd love to come to more often -- if I got a big raise.

Three stars to start after one visit. It could go up if I were a frequent flyer. My friend and I went here searching for a mellow night to continue celebrating the completion of her Master's from SF State. The restaurant/lounge feels more like a restaurant that stays open late. If you can muscle your way past the bar you'll find hidden and lightly occupied booths/tables. Just beyond that is a step down to play pool. The place is clean and decorated fairly well, but somehow I can't escape a feeling that it was once a diner. Our server was delightful and great to clarify what some of the dishes were on the menu (alerting my fish disliking friend that the artichoke came with raw fish). The food - meh. It seems like it's a cross between casual and upscale, achieving neither very successfully. The fries are done well, but reminded my friend of when Burger King, or was it Jack in the Box, redid their fries. We both found the dipping sauces dull and flavorless. Some sort of chipotle aioli maybe that was just heavy on the spice and a pesto aioli or something maybe? I can't recall the names, but the green one just tasted like dull mayonnaise. I also can't remember what the recent grad had to say about the Hush-puppies. Dinner is served until 10:30pm. I ordered the beignets. Small bite sized pastry puffs covered in powdered sugar and paired with 3 dipping sauces of Lemon, A berry (I believe raspberry) and chocolate. The chocolate almost seemed to have a hint of coffee flavor to me, or was just burnt. The raspberry - ok, and the lemon superb. All in all, the food is highly priced and not the greatest. On the drink front you can get half of bottles of Champagne during happy hour (the cheapest being $40! That means only $20!) and they have a great drink menu. After our libations and nibbles we sauntered over to the club portion of it and I really enjoyed it. The set up seems as confused as the menu... like it doesn't know if it's a bar, a club, a lounge or a restaurant, but the music and diverse crowd makes all of that irrelevant. You'll find all ages, races, sexualities, genders here. You know what's missing? Attitude. No bad attitudes found here! Just people out to dance and enjoy themselves and share in the happiness. The music was excellent and done by a live DJ looking down on the dance floor. For a music lover who likes a variety I can say I didn't know anything he played towards the end of the night, but it was all excellent.

Hip hop karaoke on Monday nights? YES. I been here once. Burgers + fries are AWESOME. Very tasty indeed. The place has got an uptown vibe to it. It does get kinda crowded + busy at night but I think its because the music is dope (Oakland Faders hold it down), food is good, full bar, dancefloor +they got pool tables in the back... Shit, I'd hang out here. I think there is a cover charge and the food is kinda pricey (hence the uptown-ness) but damn I had a good time here.

Once I was there with a group for lunch and we waited an hour (after ordering) before any of us got our food. My husband had to get his to go because he had to go back to work. I was pissed as hell at the waitress for her ineptitude and the establishment for its indifference - comping his sandwich would have gone a long way to undo the damage. I contemplated writing a nasty review... but I didn't. Why? Because that is just one bad experience out of dozens of other positive experiences I've had at Lukas. That one experience didn't stop me from going back there time after time. I did think long and hard about how I would review Luka's and in the end I decided to give it proper credit. Sure I've dealt with clueless, sometime even rude hostesses there and received below average service at times but I still give Luka's props for what I believe it brings to Oakland. Long before all the hip and fancy restaurants and bars started popping up in Oakland, Luka's took a chance on a space that was once a sad Hofbrau in a sketchy neighborhood and ended up transforming the area itself. Luka's range and diversity reflects Oakland. Their food is genuine and thoughtful. From the mussels served 3 ways to the unctuous grown-up mac and cheese, the food is upscale yet comforting. It's a great place for drinks and appetizers, a perfect spot for lunch or dinner, and their weekend brunch (can you say fried poussin and waffles?) is a well kept secret. I've yet to have a bad meal there. Their wine list is short but sweet and reasonable (and 1/2 price on Sundays) and their beer options are extensive (Belgian beers on tap - hello?). I've also done my share of boozing there when the place turns into a club scene after 10 - it's definitely a scene, a very DIVERSE scene and it's fun, even for an off-the-market awkward Asian mom like me. Luka's is so cool. It's so Oakland. How can I give it any less than 5 stars?

This is a review update for a Wednesday Night Salsa Lessons and Dancing. The two instructors were really great! Went over serveral basic steps and timing. And at the end of 45 minutes we partnered up! It is held in the room to the left . Ample amount of space to get your turns on! The well versed in salsa dancing came out that night and it felt like a really safe place to come and practice here! But sometimes it takes a really good DJ to play all the right salsa songs. not all salsa songs sound the same! i'd probably come back here with a friend to practice dancing together. oh yeah and I had a chicory salad that night!!

Love it dearly, but dammit I just never get around to hanging out in the Biggety-O! Why? Probably cuz I've been spending all my time in the Sucka-Free...HOLLA!!! I came to Luka's for some much needed homie time...both the actual city and a fer reals homie. They have Chimay on tap, yo! Whut whuuuuut!!!! They had the Lakers vs. Suns game on, too! (side note: Shaq isn't doing so well..dawg's gettin' old) Dinner..meh. My dinner was scalding hot and homie's was cold. The tables were really close too but that didn't matter, our dining neighbors were hella friendly. Don't talk about anything too embarrassing though..your shit'll get overheard. I'd roll back up into this mug though....especially cuz I want to check out their nightly live music. I'm all over that....booze and music is bomb ass! LOVED this place! Was in town for business and craving oysters. Service was excellent and so was the food!! There were several types of oysters to choose from. Honestly, everything on the menu looked really tasty. It was hard to make a decision. Another positive is you can really tell the food is fresh. There are not 20 or more entrees to read through which is usually a good sign. My waiter recommended a wine and I loved it! Everyone was so nice. Will definitely be bringing my staff here for our next work dinner. Thank you!!!

Been at Luka's twice, both time i just got drinks. Didn't get a chance to try their food, i was busy enjoying the dance floor. Good Music, Good drinks, Good people, that's all that matters! But the reason why i didn't give it 5stars, wells one of the bartender was rude because I kept coming back for more drinks with friends. She rolled her eyes and snapped whenever my friends or I order a drink. RUDE! So i didn't tip her and I tipped her co-worker generously needless to say, she got PISSED off & decided to confront me. WOW really?? how professional is that? If she wasn't so rude while helping me, she would have gotten a tip. Its that simple. shessssh!

As penned prior, I've enjoyed many meals and visits to Luka's ... but their menu offerings for Oakland Restaurant Week were a disappointment. All non-food items were fine, including a patient waiter for our party of 8, especially with a 45-minute delay in ordering due to one guest's unavoidable late arrival. Drinks were also fine. What wasn't fine? The food. Their $20 prix fix for ORW seemed a great value on paper -- but in execution? The quality, to quote another diner, was mediocre. My courses: 1. Touted as "ROMAINE SALAD W/ CREAMY GARLIC DRESSING preserved meyer lemon, crispy capers & croutons," those who ordered this were presented with seven or so tiny inner leaves of not-fresh romaine and a couple of tiny croutons. The portion was comically small, which actually turned out to be a bonus as the dish was so lackluster. 2. Main course "MOULES FRITES mussels cook in white wine, shallots & herbs served w/ Belgian fries." Possibly the worst dish of mussels I've ever ordered. The prime culprit was the broth, whose goodness should make one want to take the bowl and slurp it like a fine wine. This broth however reeked of 'low tide,' according to one diner, a sign of non-freshness. Also not quite fresh were more than two mussels which never opened, yet still ended up in my bowl. I ate less than half the mussels and let the clearer know they weren't good. He didn't respond. 3. Dessert: ACORN SQUASH CRÈME BRULÉE w/ ginger snap cookie." We joked about squash as a dessert; I was fine with that as a lover of zucchini bread et al. Yet, this brulée was room temperature and watery under its caramelized crust. Which made the vegetable aspect of the dessert more like a dinner's veggie side with sugar and nutmeg thrown in. The ginger snap cookie was, however, fine. Best part of my meal. Sampling a few other items from our party: - The Oyster app (three; Marin Miyagis) -- the best thing eaten that night. - The main course "PAN ROASTED CHICKEN BREAST celeriac mash, brussels sprouts & lemon-herb jus" was IMO the most edible of the entrees, but noticeably unspectacular. - The "GRATINEED "MAC & CHEESE" -- purportedly vy popular here. It wasn't bad, but I could identify the flour in the sauce more easily than any of the four cheeses used. So many places make great mac & cheese these days; this dish didn't rank among them. Nicely crisp green beans side though. I've had mostly good trips and good meals with Luka's in the past. But if my first exposure to their food was my Saturday's ORW meal, I'd never make a return visit. So, overall, averaging my visits to three stars -- but for their ORW food, it's a low two stars. Their reputation, and their guests, deserve better food than what we were served.

I just had a really nice dinner and Luka's. My server was friendly and aware. The food was pretty darn good, and the alcohol was flowin'. Started off with an "Effen Gimlet". Vodka, lime, cucumber/mint simple syrup. Sounded kinda weird, but that's why I got it. I loved the interplay of the cucumber and the lime...and the alcohol. You should try it. Starters were great as well. Oysters Rockefeller were salty and I like that. The tuna tartare was off-the-heezy. I was totally cumfused when the plate arrived. Something resembling a fritter was perched atop my tartare, perched atop some kind of crispy flatbread. Was this what I ordered? Yes. The fritter looking thing was actually a fried egg. Yeah, I think they soft-boiled an egg, peeled it, breaded it, and fried it. Where have you been all my life fried egg? The tuna was simply dressed with onion, cilantro, I think, and other stuff. What else do you really need to do to Ahi? Alltogether with the flatbread, it was fantastic. For entree, I selected the "Bourride." Really good and seasonal seafood stew. Thanks for giving me leeks, fava beans, fresh english peas, and artichokes, all of which are really good and in season right now. The seafood cookery could have been improved by not using mini shrimp, which were unfortunately overcooked. With some prawns and a little more salt, and it would have been a 10 fo sho. I did go way overboard soaking up the broth with bread, but it was worth it. Mini beignets for dessert. Little pillows of love dipped in raspberry coulis...bomb. Could have been sweeter, but I didn't really need more carbs, so I'll give a pass. My only complaints are the lack of espresso and dessert wine beside port. Coffee was good and strong, so I can't really hate, but I really like a shot of espresso after a nice meal. Get the caffeine intake over with in 30 seconds. On the dessert wine front, I think every restaurant in the world needs to stock Tokaj. Hungarian liquid apricot honey...the best. You got to offer some white dessert wine. Yes, port for chocolate, but for beignets? I don't think so. This place is a little loud, so don't come here for a romantic date. Parking was easy. Excellent beer selection. I think they convert into a pseudo dance club at night with a cover on the weekends. Worth checking out if you're in the area.

Bloody Mary: Not much flavor. All you really taste is the horseraddish Belgian Fries: GREAT! (mostly the reason why we came here) Great dipping sauces and and probably a good hangover cure LOL! Luka Omelet: eggs with smoked trout and creme freshe, a side of grits and toast. Was just ok. The omelet was a bit on the runny side and the portion of grits was a bit much. Update: (2/09/07) Ok, after a second go, I admit it. Luka's wins for Oakland's best burger. Perfectly done how I asked, incredibly tasty and good meat (Niman Ranch), perfect size, on a nice bun. And the fries are really damn good and plentiful. I agree with Brad L. about the ridiculous $1.50 price for grilled onions. (Hell, at Val's you get a whole damn plate of grilled onions for less, enough to feed 4!) But I got them anyway. Mmm. Service was *much* better on this visit, perhaps because it was earlier (6 pm on a Saturday), or who knows why. So, I'm raising the original 3-star review to 4 stars. Original review: (10/07) My girlfriend and I headed over to Luka's the other night, after an evening class down the block at the East Bay Meditation Center. We were starving and it was after 9 in the middle of the week. We prayed that Luka's kitchen would still be open. Not that Theravadin Buddhists are all that into prayer, but in this case, our prayers were answered. And, in fact, the kitchen is open til like 10:30, which is a minor miracle. The bar was hopping, and the dining area in back was sparsely populated with what seemed to be local regulars. Nice. We were slightly overwhelmed with the beer variety, but it was clear that beer is one of the main attractions, so we dove in and ordered some interesting ones. Yum. The food was a mixed bag. I loved my burger, and the fries are among the best I've ever had. The supposedly fancy mac and cheese, however, was reminiscent of lumpy wheatpaste -- all white sauce, seemingly no cheese, bland as hell. Sad and surprising for the price and description. I enjoyed the beet salad, but I wouldn't write home about it. Service was friendly and forgetful. I generally am quick to forgive people forgetting my request for "no tomatoes" -- even though I specify that I have a bonafide allergy. It's rare that a restaurant gets it and leaves off the tomatoes. They just can't be bothered to make a fresh setup, apparently. And Luka's is no exception here. But they entirely forgot one of the items we ordered. Had it been crowded, it could see being that forgetful. But no. So, one star off for mediocre service. I'll go back. I'll try some other items. I'll have the fries again and maybe the burger. I'll be glad it's there after 9 pm on a weekday. And that's what I have to say about Luka's for dinner. Fat-friendly, I'd say yes it is. I was comfy there. And I'm about as fat as they come.

As I've told chef Jake, Luka's has got to have the best burger in the East Bay. And this is coming from a recently reformed decade-long vegetarian. Too bad my system doesn't like meat (yet) as much as I like it... I love that you can call Luka's and get a reservation -- at least on a weeknight -- just a half hour from the phone call. Sure beats standing three-deep at the bar hoping you can get the bartender's attention! Speaking of the bar, Luka's is the only place I know of that has Maredsous on tap. I like the Trappist, but last time I looked they only had it for something like $13 in a big bottle... Not that I shy away from paying that much for a good glass of wine sometimes. Priorities, people, priorities! Luka's has a good deal on wine on Sundays -- 1/2 off a bottle, although that probably just makes up for the markup! :-p I need to check out my friend Raz's bi-monthly Thursday night party there, Resonant, although I have a hard time associating Luka's with more than drinks and/or dinner...

I want to like this place - I really do! I love the location and the ambiance of the place (aside from being surprisingly loud). I've had brunch here previously (before I was a yelper) and really liked it. A little overpriced, but good. I came here for dinner with three friends for a little mini-celebration. Overall, our service was mediocre. While our waiter was nice, it took a noticeably long time to get a drink anytime someone ordered another one. My friend and I split a "Luka's Belgian-Style Fries" which were delicious. My main entrée left a lot to be desired. I ordered the $17 "Tagine of Winter Squash" which was described as "moroccan vegetable stew of delacata, acorn & butternut squash w/ cauliower, broccoli, dried apricots, ginger, cilantro, almonds, couscous & harissa" Now, it's challenging at times to find decent vegetarian fare at some restaurants. I had the option of Macaroni and Cheese, but ordered this the night before at Rick and Ann's, so I thought I would go with the more expensive, more healthy option. The plate arrived and was a bit smaller than I had hoped. It was also rather bland. The vegetable tasted like they had simply been chopped and thrown in a steamer. There wasn't any sort of taste it was just a mis-mash of veggies with couscous. I ate the plate rather quickly and was left feeling hungry and deeply unsatisfied. I would have felt much better about this if it had been $7 as opposed to $17. I don't have deep pockets, so this was a rather frustrating experience. I recommend Lukas for an after-work drink, but go somewhere else for dinner.

I love Sunday brunch here! For my taste buds they serve the best chicken and waffles and beignets in the Bay Area. However, their other dishes are yummy as well. I'm a fan of the Eggs Benedict as well. They have a great selection of beer and great tasting specialty drinks. And, I have no complaints on service. Unfortunately, I have only been here for Sunday brunch a few times. I need to come back and try their regular menu. When I do, I will update my review.

I have officially been convinced that if you want true hip hop and dancing that Oakland is really the best place to go. As much as traveling over the bridge can screw you over if you don't drive it is work the trek out to try some amazing clubs like Lukas. I have been here about four times and each time the DJ's played some amazing sets of Bay Area and main stream hip hop. I haven't heard this since I was in Texas and it was a welcome surprise. There are sometimes small lines outside Lukas but they do a good job of getting people in with little to no hassle which I always appreciate from bouncers who are an essential part of the clubbing experience. There is a varying cover charge but it's never too expensive like the 20 dollars covers of SF. Once inside you walk immediately into the bar and dinner area straight ahead. It is usually crowded with many people option to spend their night in this side of the club as opposed to the dance floor. Once you edge your way to the bar there are some decent drinks but nothing was ever really strong which was disappointing for the cost but I don't drink a lot in clubs so if that's a big turnoff be warned. Further back there are tables for larger groups and dinners if you choose that route. There are no VIP areas which is great. As you make your way around the circle you will pass the lonely desolate bathrooms. Seriously it could be the creepiest bathroom set up I have seen in the bay area. It's a long dark hallway with black lights that leads to two bathrooms side by side. Women, go with a buddy is all I am saying. As is always a danger the crowd that an all hip hop location can bring can be slightly shady. It doesn't have to be but it can I think everyone can be realistic that things can get out of hand like Cellar across the bay. You go with hopes of a good time and usually it is but there is an opportunity for something to break out so be warned. After you pass the bathrooms it's on to the dance floor and this is where Luka's really shines. The food was great when we went but once that was out of the way the second room opens into a dance club and it's such a great mix of people and music. Luka's like many places in Oakland skews older like over 25 which a welcome relief from the "are you sure you are 21" feeling you have in SF. I am not a bay area native but felt like one when bouncing around to hyphy songs and mac dre with real Oakland patrons. The dance floor never gets too crowded even though it's a smaller space which is a number one on my list of dance venues. The music keeps the party going all night and you can't help but leaving feeling like you got your money's worth if you go on a Friday or Saturday night here no matter how many people show up. Bring your hip hop loving friends and start "feelin yo self" in one of the premier hip hop locations in the Bay Area.

One of the only places I know that is considered more the club-ish bar scene, but has a rather diverse food menu. I should note that is IS a restaurant by day. The bartenders are always friendly and good with recognizing repeat business. There are Djs on some nights (always on the weekend) and it can get VERY crowded. There is a dance floor (though not very big) and also a pool table where you can challenge the local sharks if that's your thing. For what it is, Lukas does it's job pretty well and has a nice diverse crowd. They have drinks, music and a dance floor without the typical nightlife trouble some places seem to attract with that particular mix.

I could write about the good food, chill vibe and good service of this place but instead I'll tell you about one meal here and one staff member that honestly changed my life. My fiance and I were having drinks here last night when I did something insanely stupid: I left an envelope full of money here. Not some nickle and dime stuff.... I left $16,000 (YES SIXTEEN HUNDRED DOLLARS) here. I don't know if the drinks were just that potent or my brain fell straight down my head and out of my flat Asian ass, but I left enough money to buy a Cambodian orphan behind at a restaurant in downtown Oakland. To make matters worse, that money was being used for our wedding next month, and we only flew to the Bay to get married in front of my parents after living in Thailand for the last four years. I realized it was lost and spent a brutally sad day crying and consoling myself with fitting as many hot dogs in my mouth as possible (just like any normal human does, right?). Then I got a call from the day manager (thanks Rick) saying that the night manager (aka my fairy godmother, Ziggy from Quantum leap and Hans Solo rolled into one) found the money and locked it up in the safe. What kind a beautiful soul would find $1,600 in down town Oakland and return it to a complete stranger?!?! Well, his name is Reid and I owe him more gratitude than I could ever muster in a Yelp review. People throw around the term "restored my faith in humanity" too loosely. You can't just throw that shit around. A great sandwich or photos of interracial babies holding hands are great and all.... but real, honest people with big hearts like Reid who do the right thing for people they don't know; that didn't just restore my faith in humanity, it made me want to be a human being worthy of having faith in. If I had found that money, I would have made it rain so hard that umbrella stocks would be at an all time high, but now I will choose a better path. I will smile at the guy who steals my parking spot and laugh it off when I get eye raped on public transit because of every 9,999 insignificant asshole acts, there is one great random act of kindness that wakes up your soul and lights up places in you that had gone dark a long time ago. So again, THANKS REID. I wish I could high five him until my hands fall off or hug him until my busoms turn to old lady mush... but I can't. So please enjoy a meal at Luka's and do it for me. You'll get some good food and the privilege of meeting a good, honest, true example of humanity.

I was told the fried chicken was to die for... well it was so greasy and had no seasoning. Totally gross. I am a HUGE grits fan. What ever that is they are calling grits is so awful. I am going right back to Mama's Royal Cafe for my grits. The collard greens were to salty and the portion was very small. The service was OK... Their drinks look amazing but at $10 a pop don't think I will be trying them anytime soon. The place is over all over priced. It is just not that cool and I feel like I am pay tourist prices and shit. I will leave this place to the yuppies. Okay so I guess there are cocktails in Oakland worth $10 a pop.... I went back and the cocktails alone are enough to give this place another star and I tried the Hush Puppies and they were to die for!

the attraction here is/was the $1 off the draft beer and $1 oysters on mondays. assume this is still true now. they have a fine selection of belgium beers and the garlic fries are an attraction with the three dipping sauces. they serve a pretty decent burger ((?) here. juicy with chips and dills. my last time there was a bummer. i ordered my garlic fries first and the inattentive bartender gave it to another couple who came in 10 minuted later and didn't order anything else. i haven't been back. my taste for garlic fries and $1 oyster had lapsed.

And who said that there was any booze in it? pfft. Luka was a stray dog, and now it is a restaurant, or so the story goes. It is also a music venue, casual bar, taproom, restaurant and it likes to wax nostalgic about it's predecessor the Hofbrau with strategically placed memorabilia. Luka's has a really good mac and cheese and a decent beer/cocktail menu but what drew me here was its promise of an amazing burger, because, if you don't know by now, a cheeseburger would be on the menu should I someday do something very very bad and find myself on death row. Well, let me clarify. Luka's burger would NOT be on that menu. Nope, sorry, don't believe the hype. It is mediocre at best. Also, you really shouldn't believe I would do something bad enough to land me on death row in the first place . Or should you???

The Boyfriend and I live really close so we're here all the time. I lovelovelove $1 oysters on Monday nights. There's nothing better than a dozen oysters and a cold beer to start off the week! Luka's also has a pretty extensive beer selection. As was noted in other reviews, the burger is amazing! It's always so juicy and definitely worth the price. The fries are also an amazing side. You should order it separately to get the three different kinds of sauce to dip them in! I usually get the Crab Dungeness Salad which is always fresh. Just a note: don't take any of this salad home as leftovers. It gets soggy, salty, and just plain gross. The service is not the best. I don't come here to have the server's undivided attention because I won't get it. Even one of the hosts is really weird and kinda creepy - I don't think he ever blinks and he never smiles. His tone never changes and he always looks like we're a huge inconvenience for walking in the door. Overall, this is a great place for a casual dinner. I try to stay away on the weekend nights because it just gets so loud and crowded that I can't even hear myself think.

I love this place - it's a great lunch, dinner, happy hour, or late drinks spot. (Haven't been there for brunch). Great ambiance - the bar, restaurant, lounge and pool room are all fun. I would go weekly if the meals were a little less pricey. I also really like that Luka the dog is painted on one of the walls (look up to the left when you walk in). I think the burger is as good as the hype, and the fries and specials are always good. I have really enjoyed the golden beet salad, mac & cheese, soup and sorbet. They have a good selection of beers on tap, a good prosecco, and a great bloody mary, which is always key for me. I'll be back soon!

I just had an culinary experience so miraculously hedonistic and artistically inspired that I am adding this place to the List. Other than Ethnic Food I think there could be a place for Comfort Food in a Hip Environs. Luka's Taproom & Lounge 2221 Broadway (Grand and Broadway) Oakland CA 94612 510 451-4677 Luka's is named after the owner's dog (artfully displayed above the bar)and one must remember that the owner was an artist (I surmise) and the very first business to set up shop on one of the four corners we now know as Uptown. Ozumo, Plum, Vo, Mua, Nex, Betty's, Pican, Flora and Hawker Fare are all nearby. But this place does something better than the others. Luka's is a culinary destination, but also a fun bar with TV's showing the Stanford-Oregon football game. Luka's serves a hip version of comfort food in an upscale pub&bar setting. I recommend you sit at the bar - it engages and sets up the experience. Sure enough the barkeep (Eric) makes the best Mojito en el mundo ( I swear) and we order the Moules Mariniere (there is a Belgian/French twist in all of this and the braised fennel gave it the pastis hint), a rucola/beet salad and what is now officially confirmed as the Best Burger in the East Bay. Luka's is the sui generis artists cooking for artists environment. Eric made the Mojito so savory yet smoothly delicious that it became the ne plus ultra of all bar drinks. I ordered another and learned the recipe from Eric right in front of us (how cool). The chefs put out Chez Panisse type salads and the world's best burger bar none. Each dish was the epitome of hedonistic pleasure and sheer culinary bliss. Details like the acme bread and what I am sure is a European plugra butter also make the difference . Even the water with the lemon touch became the best one ever. And the clafouti for desert only confirmed my impression of a chef and bartender being 100% on during a Saturday Night scene. The key was sitting at the bar and breaking down the distance between the kitchen and servers and creating a unique experience, much like a Street Food exchange. Note-Luka's has $1.00 oysters on Mondays until they run out, a Happy Hour daily and 50% off all wine bottles on Sunday. Trend - proximity to street food via bar seating or a chef's table Insider Trading- being in touch with the server or bartender which allows for a visual cue on things coming out of the kitchen and invites recommendation, which can steer you to a blissfully successful ordering experience. Eric wryly said "a good selection" after I ask him for the low down on some dish and accepted his guidance. So engage in a repartee with a good chef or bartender who wants the client to recognize his skills. Plus how would I have learned that he had lived in Miami and perfected the mojito there. His Mojito was powerful and artistic, savory and balanced and just bonito to look at. All I needed next was to float into one of their DJ lounges and begin my Salsa Land Dancing Fantasy.

Tried lunch and dinner. It's ok. Staff is friendly enough and the food is satisfactory. not too overpriced, menu is not too risky, cocktails are consistent. Lunch atmosphere was as expected, busy. Luka's was the setting where I had my first date with my husband. I have such fond memories being there, and literally there was a point I think I was going there about once a week. The burgers here are amazing! Always cooked exactly the way I want, medium rare or medium depending on my mood. IF you get fries, you HAVE TO ask for their special dipping sauces: chipotle ketchup, aioli and another fantastic one which is escaping me right now. (But the tatste itself is super memorable!) I've also had the Mac & Cheese which is sinful, the different NY steaks which always have a special jous in different variations. They also do a great cold seafood platter with crab, shrimp and oysters All superb and very fresh. The migonette that goes with this is always consistently great. OMG, and dessert is just ridiculous, especially the chocolate bignets. This is a great place to go to especially if you are going to a concert at the Paramount which is just steps away. Parking is hard at times, but usually within a couple blocks; us Californians sure are lazy aren't we?!?

I actually really like the place and want to give more stars, but just one time we encountered a roach... so ever since we're kind of nervously looking around to make sure we don't have uninvited guests at our table.

Food is great, the wait isn't. Also, a bit over-priced, but overall good ambiance and relatively good service- except for the passively-snooty hostess. In short, stopped by for a quick bite and a drink- that took 2.5 hrs, so not ok! Thank goodness I was in good company and that the food made it worth it- puffy beignet pillows are a yummy dessert!

Complaints: fries can be too salty, they serve fine beers in thin-stemmed wine glasses which ruins their body, on a recent visit their $1 monday oysters were SO TINY i don't even know how they were caught, and our waitress was a bit.... absent. But somehow, everytime I go to Luka's, I have a good time. It's a good atmosphere, the dining room is amiably crammed, and the $11 burger is tasty. I would say it's worth a shot. But order a lot of oysters. you never know which ones are going to be infinitesimal.

3 stars for my average of experiences here. Up until last night, the first few times here were great (easy 4 stars). Cool vibe, good beers, and awesome food. Last night, however, I took a group of 7 friends there who were from out of town. Long story short, I was embarrassed to have been the one to suggest Lukas! They took FOREVER to do anything. And once the food got there (after almost an HOUR), the burgers were cold and inconsistently cooked. Beers also took about 20 minutes to get, even though it was only moderately busy. We would have not left a tip if they didn't automatically add a 18% gratuity on parties of 6 or more. Lukas, get your act together, you are breaking my heart!

You know, when I schlep across the country to spend quality time w/friends and family, I hope that they will point me to some awesome places to eat. Luka's is definitely one of those places. We started w/sharing some of their delicious hand-cut fries. Cooked and seasoned perfectly w/3 different dipping sauces. Since it was Monday, I had to go for the $1 oysters and got 10 for myself. No one else in our party enjoyed oysters, so I had to go it alone. These were fresh, sweet, thick and tasty Skookum oysters from Washington State. So good! My husband had the tuna tartare appetizer and he said (direct quote), "You got to give kudos to anyone who has the balls to deep fry an avocado." He was pleased. My sister tried the field to family airline chicken and was gushing about how good it was. Our friend had the basil gnocchi and was equally pleased. I shared the baked mac & cheese w/my husband and thought the cheeses were great, but couldn't taste the leeks (and I love leeks). Can't wait to go back on my next visit to Oakland!

What a beautiful place! I went on a Sunday night and really enjoyed the dance floor! Although there were not many people dancing, the DJ was great at mixing up the music when we stepped on the floor. I had the large fries and I must say I was expecting more. It tasted kind of plain. Everyone likes the fries because of the sauce but I was not thrilled for $6.00. The Sex on the Beach was great but my Lemon Drop was a little bit too strong and not as lemony as it should have been. The two bartenders acted like they did not know how to move fast enough. This place has potential but since there is already a following, I doubt they will change much.

Luka's = 46 dollars and 76 cents for a hamburger and fries and four beers. I was kind of expecting a dive bar. When I looked at their website I saw that they had beers on tap and bar food but I didn't really look at their prices. I ended up splitting a burger with a friend and paying 8 bucks per beer. It was nice-ish, but I felt like the food was overpriced for what you were getting. The cheapest thing on the menu was bean and ham hock soup and it was still 8 or 9 bucks. Yes, the waiters wear all black. Yes, the lighting is good. Yes, the tables are made of real wood and the colors are sparse and tasteful. Yes, there was the beginnings of salsa dancing in the back and a pool table... Yes, the crowd was eclectic and diverse. But was my burger and four beers worth 47 dollars? I'm not so sure. My server was a little on the annoyed side despite our lack of annoyance. Luka's = ok, but probably not repeatable.

I've got to say this is a great go to place for good cocktails and happy hour prices. I give it 3 - stars for this! The food is another story. I've eaten here on a about 3 occasion, the fries are very good, but really that is there only claim to fame on the food. The food isn't bad but it isn't good either. On my last visit I ordered the Clam Chowder ($11)I must admit my expectations were high, could this be the possibly the best soup i've ever had? I mean for $11 I expected perfection. Well perfection was not what I received! I was really disappointed with my potato soup, because that is what it was.. well with the addition of about 6 fresh clams. Bummed. I know now that the best part of Luka's is the first Friday events and the cocktails.

We have visited Luka's many times for lunch and they do not disappoint, as long as you know what to order. What I recommend on the menu are the $1 Oysters (every Monday), Spicy Thai mussels, Chicken Sandwich with Belgium Fries, Beet and Apple Salad, Mac and Cheese, and the Chocolate Fondant. Who can go wrong with $1 oysters? They are delicious and usually pretty fresh. My only gripe is that once I ate an oyster that was not cleaned very well and I bit into a small rock! Hence the 4 stars. The Spicy Thai mussels are to die for. I am not a seafood person and prior to this dish the only seafood I ate was fried crab. This dish changed all that and now I am in love with mussels. The dish is served with the mussels in their shell in a pool of sauce. It's not very spicy but it does have an asian hint to it and a hint of thai curry. Use bread to soak up the sauce and you will have an orgasm in your mouth. The chicken sandwich is moist, juicy, crispy, and is delivered to you so hot and fresh it's unbelievable. It makes me wonder why people go to Bake Sale Bettys across the street for their soggy and cold fried chicken. Anyway, add the the best tasting fries you have ever tasted and you will forget all the problems of your day. The Beet and Apple Salad is fresh and tasty. No oily dressing and it makes you feel great if you are watching your figure. The Mac and Cheese is the best I have tried. Crispy exterior and cheesy interior with just enough of flavor to balance everything. It also comes with a side of greens that pairs extremely well with it. Last is the desert, the Chocolate Fondant. Hot moist chocolate, paired with cold ice cream and a caramel cookie. This my friend, is bliss. I just wished for $7 bucks the portions were just a bit larger.

An extra star for the extremely personable service, stellar drinks, and putting me in the position that I just couldn't say no to anything that came to the table, ahem, dessert that is, and that extra drink? Must tries: Blood orange margarita, burgers, salads...and dessert. Give in and just unbutton the pants so you can fit it all in the belly.

I'm kind of on the fence about this one....two stars might be harsh but it doesn't really deserve three. I wandered in here to meet a friend for dinner/drinks on a Thursday. The hostess was friendly and accommodating and said that everything in the dining room was reserved, but we could get the full dinner menu in the lounge. So we went to the lounge and were accosted by a brusque, pushy server. Ordered a couple drinks and a light dinner. Were too scared of the server to hang around and order another. Ran away and went home. However the food was good. The girls got salads (meager but pretty) and the boy got Belgian-style fries, which apparently means that they are served in a cup, not on a plate. Good selection of beer but nothing really impressive.

Luka's is a very NY kind of feel joint! I went there for the Halloween costume party and had a Blast! It was eclectic, soulful & I loved the artwork in the gallery which by the way doubles as a fabulous dance floor! The DJ booth is up above the dance floor with a birds eye view of the party! The service of the barkeeps was quick and the drinks were on point. But I do have to take into account that I am a 2 drink wonder. Check out the pics from the night! I am the Deadly Nurse Naughty! There were other nurses too, and maybe even more naughty! The costumes were creative and it was a great place to be! I have yet to eat here but I am planning on coming back. The dining area looked very spacious and the food I saw was looking fabulous. One day I will come back and update after I eat there!

I came here on 10/31/2011! Will always love this place! I used to frequent this place when I worked pretty much next door at that time. The food is amazing and the music is super hot! I ordered the catfish bites which were delicious! I will definitely come to this place again and would recommend this place to everyone who likes a nice crowd.

always impossible to get a seat on a weekend night, and sadly, that's when I'm usually in the east bay. Earlier in the day, however, it's easier, and well-worth the drive downtown to sample one of the many beers (I'm a sucker for the Belgians!) and one of the best burgers and fries to be found on mother earth. Sunday Brunch is great too, plus the bar is really well-stocked :)

I shoot pool at Luka's and have since 2008. I pretty much only eat the Luka's burgers. I over the years have eaten pretty much everything on their menu but I like the burgers best. So at lunch, happy hour or just late night Luka's is a friendly, fun place with bartenders and a wait staff that is ready to please. If you're a hard drinker Luka's is a good place. Four quarters will get you a game of pool in the back. I saw the last two championships won by Kobi at Lukas. I saw UofH win a bowl game a couple of days ago in the back while shooting pool and sipping on a whiskey sour. Fair prices, strong pour, good place. Street parking so BART is a good choice.

One of my favorite things about Oakland - good date spot; on both nights I've been, there was loud ass dancing next door, which was cool. Everything on the menu is great - try putting bacon inside the little pillow things (desert) - it's really good, but I can't take credit for the idea. And of course, good beer selection. I'm in constant pursuit of a bar / restaurant to call home. I want to have a place to visit over and over again - like a good friend's mom's house, a place you can count on for good food, good conversation, good service. Too bad Luka's isn't such a place - I had such high hopes for it. The burgers are decent - and are rumored to be the East Bay's best (/shrug). I like that the fries come with three dips - but it annoys me that they put them in a cone in a glass which just feels like I'm getting cheated. The bar service is quick so nothing to complain about - but the waiters ... hmmmm ... well, the waiter was either on drugs or had just given his 2 weeks notice and was going to go join a dotcom that is pre-IPO. He just didnt' seem to care ... and when you've got a table of 5 beautiful friendly women (some coy, some flirtatious, some sassy) how can you not at least be somewhat engaged? I'd probably head back here again because it wasn't a tragic experience and there does seem to be a lack of cool places in Oakland ... but next time, I'll stick to beer ordered direct from the bar.

I have fond memories of this place because my wife and i used to go there regularly (pre-kid days). She used to live on 23rd and we would just walk there. The surrounding neighborhood is not the greatest. We've heard of people being mugged around this place. But the drinks are good, there is a distinct unpretentious Oakland vibe. Anyone who likes the bar scene in Oakland should check it out.

The Belgian fries and multiple dipping sauces ARE really that good. The mac'n'cheese is amazing. You might think, how fancy and delicious could you make mac'n'cheese? Fabulous good I tell ya. Creamy underneath and slightly crunchy on top makes for a delicious meal all in itself. Along with several strong Belgian ales on tap, Lukas makes for "fancy", delicious bar food at an average price for the quality.

Here is some key advice to the kitchen and managerial staff: (1) By now, Oakland has really good restaurants. You have competitors who cook much better food, at much better prices. Folks, if you want decent burgers and salads, along with much, much better service and prices, walk across the street to Umami's (Franklin and 21st); (2) Back-space room: there's a decently sized screen up for sports events. For heaven's sake, if you're going to put that up, put the volume on. Folks in the back room come for the games. You are a freakin' restaurant, not a dictatorship. Take into account what your customers request; and (3) Restaurants are about respecting your customers. Luka's lost at least 12 regular customers tonight, due to the horrible manager on-site (not sure what his name is, but he was there at 7 p.m. -- shouted at customers, and was incredibly rude. At one point, he told customers to "deal with it..." wtf?). I understand if you're a regular at Luka's. I've been there. l loved to come to Luka's five years ago when the food was decent and the people who worked there knew what they were doing. Today, it's a lousy restaurant, with bad food and service, and bad prices. Folks are honestly better off going across the street to another restaurant or somewhere else in Oakland.

We held a company dinner here and had plenty of space for everyone to mingle. The only thing missing were tables large enough for more than two dinner plates. They arranged a nice buffet for us and the food stayed warm and tasted good. Delicious chocolate chip cookies were provided too!

I suppose I'm a bit biased because I met my future wife here, but I've got a big ol' soft spot in my heart for Luka's Taproom. And even though I can't drink beer anymore (hops allergy), their full bar makes this a complete experience. When we come to eat here, their burgers and mac 'n cheese are my regular choices. The salads are well sized, even for the manliest of men. Luka's is great for lunch, dinner, or weekend brunch.

I've been coming here for years, LOVE $1 OYSTER MONDAYS! I love how they clean each oyster without leaving any grit inside, also making sure they separate the oyster from the shell to ensure easier access! I could slurp down 2 dozen oysters in one sitting! Yes, that's how good they are. Add a little of the champagne mignonette, a dash of tobasco, a squirt of lemon and a dash of salt and OH MY GOODNESS you're close to heaven! However...everything else is terrible! From drinks, to service, ambiance and food!!! Don't even bother! I've tried almost everything off the menu...you can't do wrong with their fries I suppose. Most of the wait staff look like their on some sort of drug which makes the experience a bit more awkward, not only that they are unattentive and give attitude when they're too lazy to give you what you asked for. I will give them 3 generous stars for the oysters! Wish I could give them 5!

Very pleasant service. Our server remembered that it was my friend's birthday and added a candle to our dessert. The ambiance was nice enough - it was really a city vibe, replete with homeless man bicycling by and then stopping to salivate at my friend's Pork chop. Cool, marble topped, pub style tables for two with high chairs. Wine by the glass was great. The food was awful - I ordered the scallops - completely tasteless with a puree that was meant to have bacon in it. No such luck. Bacon is such a distinctive tasting item that you can definitely taste it, even if it just a little. I was still hungry so I ordered mussels - three options for howy you'd like the mussels prepared. I chose Thai mussels. The taste of the Thai sauce was like peanut butter. Not good at all. The beignets for dessert were decent - the sauces were mediocre. I would never go back.

In case you're unsure if $1 oysters are a good deal... damn straight it is! Even when you go buy your own up in Tomales Bay, it doesn't come down to $1 an oyster, and there, you have to shuck your own. (Obviously extra points for freshness at Tomales Bay) Anyway, $1 oysters, beers, and Belgian fries. Always a good Monday. If you like beets, their seasonal beets salad is usually good with some type of citrus. Their mussels in the bouillabaisse sauce is amazing. You need to ask for bread to soak up all the sauce. Mac and cheese with bacon and mushrooms. So decadent and so comforting.

Sigh, it's with a heavy heart that I write this review. I know, a Yelp review isn't quite that serious, but I had high hopes for here. Out and about in Oakland is always an interesting experience, and there are so many places that are so amazing that you'd be surprised. I came to Luka's to meet some friends, and I was hoping this would be one of those experiences. The place has a nice sized bar and eating area, a pool room, and a dance/club type area. A little bit of everything for your going out needs. First off, I paid a cover. I have such an issue with paying a cover when you'll buy their food while you're there, but that is what it is. $5 in the grand scheme of life isn't awful, but it hurts just the same. The drinks were strong, and the place was pretty empty early in the night, at least on the dance floor side. There was always a group of people playing pool, and the dancing was limited at first, but as it got crowded, it picked up nicely. We ordered some food while dancing, and it was very flavorful so that was a good way to break up all the booze. I think, more than the cover, my biggest problem was that the further on in the night, the more ghetto-douche the clientele became. It wasn't ghetto thug, but more of people posturing way above what they should. Comments became more crude, and it turned into an unpleasant experience. I'd go back during the day for food, or maybe later on for pool, but to stick around would probably be too much if the clientele always holds true.
