AMAZING EXPERIENCE! We ordered the Rockefellar, Mai hai and surf and turf with grilled shrimp. I have been to many steak houses in Tucson that claim to have the best steak but none of them compare to Buddy's. This place blew me away. I would not suggest if you're in a hurry because the meals took about 40 minutes to get to us but they were well worth the wait. Their drinks are also well proportioned and great. Will definitely be back on a regular basis!

This place rocks. Food is consistently fresh and well-prepared, and the staff is excellent. I die for their Patty Melt, but everything is great. The owner is one of Tucson's restaurant treasures, having been instrumental in the success of Bobby McGee's and The Lunt Avenue Marble Club. Art knows what he's doing. Luv this place.

It's a sports bar/restaurant type feel, very casual and a feel good place to come and hang out. It was a hot summer day and we decided to sit outside, the nice warm breeze of the Tucson summer felt nice. I had the apple, walnut, cranberry salad. Presentation was great! It tasted pretty good too and the portion was really big! Really filled you up even though it was only a salad! It was hard to get service or anything you wanted because we sat outside, but I understand, we were the only table outside, it's easy to forget us. It wasn't too expensive either for the portion of food that you get!

Our server Julie was excellent and suggested the blackened salmon, which was fresh and delicious. The baked sweet potatoes were served with a side of brown sugar. We also had the chicken Sonoma, which was very good with a hint of smokiness. The spinach salad was also excellent and tasted fresh. We stumbled on this restaurant on the way home and are so glad we did! It's family run and worth a visit!

This was a little bit of a surprise, I have eaten here with people from work before and it has always been okay or subpar. This time when I heard we were meeting there again, I was not bubbling over with enthusiasm, but I knew it was going to be edible. I ordered a Ruben, one of my favorite sandwiches, but often not done well, this time it was right on the money lean corn beef cut against the grain, and just the right amount of sauerkraut. The waiter was a little weird when he told us we could not split up our food and share, I asked him if he was going to come along and slap our hand for sharing a fry. Other than the weird sharing incident, it was okey dokey.

My Friend and I were heading up to Mt. Lemmon for Oktoberfest Saturday morning, and decided to stop here for food since it was on the way. Neither of us had ever been there, and we both were hankering for breakfast. To our dismay, breakfast isn't an option here....on the menu anyways. The waitress said they have all the goods to make omelets, and would ask the cooks if they would mind. She came back out and said they would be happy to toss us a bone, or omelet in this case. I said I had no preference, so let it be cooks choice, but that I like both meat and veggies. I was given a 3 egger, good size, stuffed with cheese, shrooms, ham and bacon, peppers, onions, and served with decent enough salsa. Was it the best omelet I have ever had? No. Was it great customer service and a pretty good omelet? Hell yeah. Kudos to your staff for going out of their way to get us what we desired.

We've eaten at this particular Buddy's twice. Both times have been pleasant experiences, albeit expensive. I had the Maryland crab cakes with French fries and coleslaw and for those who read my Hilda Crockett review, all I can say is the crab cakes "are good but they're not Hilda's." My partner had the grilled portebello sandwich with coleslaw. She describes it as "approaching perfection." It came with pepperjack cheese, grilled onions, tomato, with a delicious herb olive oil mixture on a tasty whole wheat bun. All for $8.99. The decor is relaxing and our server, Michelle, was superb. What keeps us from visiting more frequently are the high prices.

Love their homemade bread and muffins. Enjoyed their $6.99 cheeseburger with oh, so sweet fruit! With bernaise sauce. Mmmm. Love their $2 kids menu and its portions!! That greatly helps! Their salmon dish is my favorite. The host and servers are always very friendly. I do wish I was in the military and or a veteran. Military mondays, Teacher Tuesdays are 50% off the entire table! It can't get better than that, except I'm not either. :-)

MANAGEMENT BETTER WAKE UP! YOU ARE GOING TO GO OUT OF BUSINESS IF YOU DON'T COACH YOUR SHIFT MANAGERS AND IMPROVE CONSISTENCY AND QUALITY IN THE KITCHEN! My first one star. I feel bad as I want this place to be good. That's what's ironic. On the far East Side/Rita Ranch, selection is limited so you really are pulling for places. Unfortunately, it was a one star meal. I've eaten there before and not hated it but every time we've gone back, you just see the quality sliding and now it has bottomed out. Our one star trip started an hour before close on a weekday night. They were understaffed - they had released waiters and gotten a few tables in - but the manager was standing behind the bar talking to people sitting at the bar. The waitress was young and poorly trained. We received terrible service. There were about three tables at that point. It was my wife and I and our kid. The muffins were good - in fact, the best thing that we were to recieve. Had we stopped there, it would have been two stars. Salads were late coming out and wrong. Appetizer arrived about 15 minutes later. Then, a full 20 minutes went by - nothing. Another table came in and got drinks in that time. They didn't have any order taken in over 15 minutes. When the food came out, my fajitas were cold and flavorless. The portions of sides - sour cream, cheese, etc., - were small. I'm not expecting quality Mexican but your Friday's/Extreme Fajitas Americano are hard to mess up. That said, on that night, Buddy's Grill was up for the challenge. My single tortilla arrived 5 minutes or so after the rest of the meal. Kid's meal of meatloaf was just bad, and again, cold. At least in school it was hot off the steam table. But the thing that has me of the mind that, "I'll never eat there again," and the reason the food was late and cold - my wife ordered a burger. I know this sequence because I waited tables many years.. The cook didn't catch it on the POS system. Everything else was cooked so they slapped that bad boy on the grill, held back the rest of the food, and hoped. Well, hope is not a strategy. She bit into it the burger and while browned on the outside, it was raw - like, "Crack a quail egg on my steak tartare," raw. Given the care with which the place was so obviously managed, the thought of how safe that ground beef was made me want to yak. To be fair, there were no ill effects. We'd been there an hour. I gave my wife some of my food an she ate the school cafeteria meatloaf my kid had. As this is one of the few bars around, I wonder if they are just doing so much business in the bar they don't care about the food? Sorry Buddy's - we're not coming back until we hear of a turnaround in quality. P.S. - Anyone giving this place 5 stars, even on its best day, are nuts.

We have been going to Buddy's since we moved to the Rita Ranch/Vail area 3 years ago and I have to say I have seen it go downhill. The menu was cut in half which I understand, but I felt like they took a lot of the things we liked off. The service is always right on.. we have never had a bad service there.. period. The downfall is the food.. the last few times we have been there the food has not been as good as previous. The food also more expensive.. The happy hour special are not that great.. most places will do 1/2 off appetizers during happy hour.. Buddy's does maybe a dollar or two.. I really hope they improve things as we do love the service! We would hate for them to close!

I really don't want to write this review, but I have to. Hopefully it will save someone from making a HUGE mistake. We had friends visiting and wanted to take us out to dinner. We've never been to Buddy's before but heard it was good and on Monday's all their entree's are 50% percent off for military and their families. Big plus since we weren't paying. Everything was going good.................til the food started arriving. Place was clean, service was friendly and quick. (this is where the good portions of this review stop) We got the supreme nacho's with chicken for an appetizer. I think one of us at the table found a piece of chicken and it was more like chicken jerky, dried out, chewy, like chicken flavored shoe leather. My husband was like, "there's chicken in here"? Uh....yeah supposed to be hon......don't worry, you didn't miss anything! When our meals arrived shortly later I was cautiously optimistic. My husband ordered the chicken fried steak and French fries (mashed potatoes is what was on the plate when it arrived) The chicken fried steak was a greasy chewy mess. He ate it which wasn't a surprise because he'll eat anything when he's really hungry. Our friends from out of town got the meatloaf and mashed potatoes and it looked like dog food. I asked him how it was and he said, "eh.........." Was feeling HORRIBLE because we recommended this place and they were paying, I stabbed my fork in meatloaf to taste for myself and "eh" was an understatement. The blandest meatloaf I've ever had slathered w/ this brown goop called gravy. He ate it though. My kids meals were ok. Oldest got the chicken fingers and they were pretty good. My youngest got the Salmon and it was burnt on the bottom and dry everywhere else. She ate most of it. I saved mine for last because it was the WORST of the lot. Half the people at the table were born and raised in Maryland. We grew up on CRAB in every form. Of course I just HAD to get the "Maryland Crab Cakes". My first bite was my LAST. They were the WORST crab cakes I have EVER put in my mouth. I didn't taste any crab, only breading and A LOT of lemon and seasonings. That's it. WHERE WAS THE CRAB? A complete INSULT to the state of Maryland serving those god awful, dried up things as crab cakes and actually putting "Maryland" in the name. Thank goodness for the baked potato I ordered because I would have left hungry. My husband and I felt horrible because we recommended this place and our friends paid for it and it was just nasty food. The ONLY solace was the fact that our meals were all discounted because of the 50% off, otherwise, I would have insisted on paying for the barely edible food. The prices are really high for that kind of food as well. Definitely, NOT WORTH IT. Maybe on Mondays when all the food is discounted, they serve the awful food and the rest of the week it's good? Maybe the more you drink the better the food gets? Have no idea but we won't be going back to find out. I would like to go into that kitchen and show them how a Maryland crab cake is made though. You first start off w/ REAL LUMP CRAB MEAT............

I really like this place and they give military discounts of 50% off on Mondays. The service is great and the staff is very friendly. Although, I do think it is much more pricey than it is worth. The food is good, but not as good as the price.

We've been to Buddy's Grill a few times over the last few months. It is a good place to go to if you are just looking to eat and don't want to keep driving to find somewhere. The food is mediocre, and some of it doesn't taste like it is super fresh or super high quality. We've had the steak and chicken nachos a few times, and they're loaded up with the traditional nacho fixings. Besides the meat being chewy and flavorless, the rest of the ingredients are usually tasty enough. The salsa is more like an American version of Mexican salsa, but it's ok. The lavoshes are the best thing on the menu. They are huge and you can pick basically whatever you want to have on it. I don't suggest the bacon, though, it's often too chewy. Overall, they taste good. The entrees are underwhelming. I've had the Steak Filibuster (or is it Phillybuster? I can't remember if it had a play on words or not, oops), and the meat, again, is not good quality. The bun was ok. The Cajun Chicken sandwich is seasoned decently, but the piece of chicken is too thick. It also needs onion or something added to it for some additional flavor and texture. The fruit side dish is usually pretty good, unless they're out of grapes, which are my favorite. Also, the bread and muffins that come complimentary are great! The service is inconsistent. Sometimes it is good enough, where you are able to get drink refills in a reasonable amount of time. Other times, you better drink slowly, because they will walk right by you. We've never really had any major order mess ups, so that's good. The decor is plain, which is good enough for me when eating at this type of place. The prices are a little bit high for what they serve to you, but not outrageous. Overall, Buddy's is just ok. Not terribly great, but not awful. If you're in the area and want to eat, I would say give it a try, but realize it's not a top notch place.

    - sigh- Another place that I leave having only lukewarm feelings towards. I love when new places open around here. So I feel twice as disappointed when I don't end up loving those places. First off, we saw the website and found out about "Sunset Dinners"

Came to meet friends for Happy Hour for Tuesdays for Teachers and 1/2 off. Although the friend loves coming on Tuesdays, my daughter and I were very disappointed with both the service and the food. Thankfully we did not have to pay full price. I loved the Buddy's on Grant and had good food and service many years ago here. Tonight was very disappointing. I am not sure where our server disappeared to, but I had only one bite left of my burger when the ketchup arrived. She was friendly but did not make me feel she cared about my experience. Hamburger was really pink, although ordered medium well done. Will not be back!

This place is close to home and after sight seeing in Tombstone all day, I didn't want to drive into the city to eat dinner. My parents were visiting so we decided to give it a shot. I felt like the drink menu was a little pricey for the venue and so was the food. I ordered the chicken sonoma which was a large platter of chicken covered in a wine sauce. It was so heavily covered that I didn't notice it that it was breaded until halfway through eating it. Since I don't eat gluten, I was kind of pissed that the menu didn't list it as being breaded. The rest of my family really enjoyed their meals so I'm still giving this place 3 stars. Our waitress was fast and nice. Plus they offer 50% to military on Mondays.

We were excited that Buddy's was opening a location near Rita Ranch. For those that live out here, you know that dining options are pretty few and far between. When they opened, we were very happy with both the service and the food. The service is still good, but the food has really been going downhill over the last couple month. What used to be perfectly cooked, juicy steaks are more often than not over cooked and dry now. If you are in the area, it is an OK place to eat, but I certainly would not make a special trip out to Rita Ranch for them.

We always like Buddy's on Grant and Swan but they closed. The other location was a ways away, but after picking up a relative at the Airport, we decided to give it a try. Great! You always get to start with home-made sourdough bread and muffins. They have the same great shakes, and I had the meatloaf sandwich for lunch. Yum!!! My wife and her sister split the Chicken Salad and had plenty. They both loved it! I noticed they still have Chicken Sonoma on the menu. Usually 2 big or 3 chicken breasts cooked with artichoke hearts, mushrooms, etc. and good vegetables (not overcooked!) and potato or rice or sweet potato. This was our favorite meal at the other Buddy's. Can't wait to try it again!!! The place is always super clean, they run around with those little hand carpet sweepers to get rid of crumb, etc The other Buddy's took reservations and it is so much nicer to walk in and be seated right away! They have a full bar and the ambiance is quite nice! Good eating!!!

I probably wouldn't have ever visited Buddy's ever again if not because they opened a location in my neighborhood. Once I tried to go to their grant location, only to be seated and ignored for 20 minutes, that time we got the attention of 2 different servers and asked them if they could take our order or send a waiter over to us, they both said they would get someone but that someone never came. When we exited the hostess had the audacity to ask if the menu "wasn't for us that night" it was more like the service wasn't for us was my reply. She just smiled and got on the phone so we left, promising to never come back again. Ok, so on to the Houghton location, we decided to give them another chance since this was probably all new servers, etc. We did and had a good experience this time, people where a lot friendlier, service was good and the food was decent. Nothing crazy or out of the ordinary, just decent food. We have been back a couple of times and while the food can get a little pricey, the service has always been good. I do recommend their Lahvosh appetizer and the turkey breast and canadian bacon sandwich. So even though I'm willing to go back every now and then because of their proximity, I am not planning on taking any friends or out of town guests in.

GREAT hometown restaurant . . . where you feel like you're going over to a family member's house for dinner. MILITARY EXTREMELY friendly!!! Thank you for recognizing and honoring our veterans. We appreciate it . . . and we will show it. GREAT food!!!

We used to go to the one on Swan and Grant but, decided to try the other one. We loved it! The only sad thing for me is they don't have the scalloped pots. any more. We loved our steaks and everything else, especially the warm bread and muffins you get to wet your appetite. Well worth the drive! It's in Rita Ranch now.

I may be spoiled, but as a former Texan, I'm used to big portions for big prices. Buddy's has the big prices, but was lacking in portion. An overall mediocre meal with less than friendly service makes never really hypes me up on returning. The place is clean, though, and the bar had all the drinks I fancy at reasonable rates, so it's not a bad stop if I just want a quick drink.

At first glance the new Buddy's Grill looks like an upscale restaurant. At second glance at the menu the prices makes you think that you are definitely dining somewhere better than a typical food chain. At third glance you realize that the decor is not that rich (plastic cups for one) and the food should not be that expensive($17+ for the shrimp dinner and $9.50 for the children's shrimp dinner). It was OK but far nothing special. Service was good and friendly. I had the soup and salad the French onion was average but the Caesar salad was dreadful. It first came out with almost no dressing I asked my server for more thinking it would give the salad more flavor... I was right but the flavor wasn't that good. Other party members liked the wings but the bread wasn't a hit and the hoagie bun served with my daughter's hot dog was monstrously too big and hard. Buddy's is OK and it would be better a couple of dollars cheaper per meal.

This place is alright... We go there every once in a while when we don't feel like making dinner. I would only go for happy hour as it's pricy otherwise. Happy hour is in the bar area, but if that is full they've always granted us happy hour prices in the dining area, too. The $5 burger is okay... The cobb salad is great. Chicken wings and chicken tenders are just as expected. I liked the fried zucchini. Always ask for muffins/bread for free, I LOVE the muffins! Potato skins are pretty good... but I don't like the Nachos. I've had the crab cakes once.. they are small but good.

I've been to Buddy's several times over the past 2 years. The service has been variable, sometimes great , sometimes terrible. Unfortunately, the food has also been variable, but mostly poor. For instance, it was a slow mid-week evening, I ordered a bacon cheeseburger with the meat supposed to be medium to bleeding and the bacon well done. Our friends at the table with us ordered bacon skins along with a shared meal. We waited quite a long time for delivery of food and as mentioned the place was not busy. My burger was over cooked while the bacon was fine. My friends potato skins looked, felt and tasted like they were under the heat lamp forever. Sorry, but I can't take it any longer. There many better places to eat and drink. I'm done with Buddy's.

This review makes me so sad. I've been going to Buddy's since it opened, bringing all my friends to happy hour. The good news, the wait staff, all of it is outstanding! Friendly, attentive, observant. The food, not so much. I really don't care that the prices have increased, times are hard. But the quality of the food- especially the chicken fingers, salads and rest of the starters have bottomed out. What used to be flavorful is bland, the coating are tasteless and the salad dressing have separated so that all you taste is oil. I would rather pay a bit more and have quality food again. Rita Ranch deserves more. Hate to reiterate, but gave Buddy's a second chance. Exactly as bad or worse than before. The prices go up and the quality of the food bottom's out. Not worth the money or the time.

Love the happy hours at this place. The lavosh is delicious; the service is always exceptional. This is a great place to go with friends and family alike. If you're looking for a place to catch a game, Chances are you'll be able to find it here. I'll be back!

Buddy's is a family favorite. Very classic American fare here, sandwiches, burgers and salads are staples. On my most recent visit I had a turkey and avocado sandwich. It was good, but seriously how can you go wrong with a combo like that? On a side note the sandwich was huge! Speaking of sides, I had a cup of soup as mine. The soup that day was the chicken tortilla which came highly recommended by out waitress. Unfortunately it didn't live up to expectations. It was only so, so. No diet coke here and the diet RC they served didn't really cut it. But the real reason to come to Buddy's are the zucchini muffins! The owner's Grandmother's secret recipe. They are served complimentary with your meal. We always have to order extra.

Very reasonable prices for top quality food. The service was exceptional as well. The lunch selections were very good and the complimentary bread was out of this world. My wife had the French onion soup and is was superb! They have a great drink and wine selection with oysters on the half shell. Coming back soon for dinner.

My wife and I go at least once a month and many time twice. We've never had a bad experience there. We know the waitresses by name, the food is great, the prices are fair. I live in Vail and it's a long way to Tucson to get a good place to eat. I'm glad Buddys is only 15 minutes away from me.

I've never been to a Buddy's Grill before this, and I didn't have any expectations beyond what I'd read on Yelp. Ultimately, I didn't have most of the issues I've read in other reviews, and the experience was pretty decent. We showed up around 6:45 on a Tuesday and the restaurant was moderately busy. We were seated at a table by the bar, and the bartender was our waitress. This meant the occasional delay while she was talking to customers at the bar, but it didn't delay the arrival of appetizers or food, which were brought out by other staff members. The menu is underwhelming, and that might have been the biggest issue I had with Buddy's. Nothing on it is exciting or interesting; it's extremely standard American fare. We had the potato skins appetizer, and it was much more than expected. It came with 8 pieces, each with a hefty amount of potato on them (many places seem so meager as to be ONLY the skins), plus a lot of cheese and hefty piles of greasy bacon cubes. The bacon could have been more cooked, and drained of its grease. Other than that, these were a nice surprise. My entree was the Grilled Cajun Chicken Caesar Salad, because I figured anything with 5 words in the name must be awesome. It was also the most interesting-sounding thing on the menu. When it arrived, it had probably twice as much chicken as I expected. As with the potato skins, Buddy's seems to make up for its high prices with huge portions. The chicken was thinly sliced, which was odd, but it was pretty decent. The "cajun" component was a spice mixture sprinkled judiciously over the salad. It didn't have a ton of flavor, but it also wasn't bad. There was also a lot of ambiguous cheese, which seemed to have no flavor, but also wasn't bad. I mostly ate around that. We left full, and the prices -- which look high on the menu -- seemed reasonable, given the portions. My overall impression was that Yelp's 3.5-star average rating was quite accurate. Everything here was perfectly acceptable, but nothing stood out. In general, I felt like it was an off-brand Chili's. I chose a rating of 3 stars instead of 4 because the service was slightly slow. Food tended to arrive just as I was wondering if it was ever going to get there. Having the bartender also waiting tables felt like a mistake, as it did also cause some of the delays. In the end, I think I would eat here again, although not often. I think if service were faster, I would be happy to bump this review up to 4 stars.

Four of us went to Buddy's Grill for an early dinner. Our friends had been there before and recommended it. From the get go the staff was fantastic, The food was very good. Melissa (aka Jane, Sally, Bobbie Jo, Martha) was our server she is the best and a lot of fun hence all the names. My wife had the fish and chips and I had the cheddar bacon cheese burger and we were both very satisfied with our meals. Thank you Sue, Elizabeth, Linda oh wait I mean Melissa. The manager (Tom) checked in with us to make sure every thing was as it should be. We will defiantly be back.

One of the better places for lunch here in this area of Tucson. The free bread, the crabcake appetizer, and my hamburger were all very good. The service is excellent too. The crabcakes were the winner for me as they weren't dry but not oily either. They had a nice fresh crab flavor and went down too easily.

We loved Buddy's at the last location and have so many fond memories of coming to this restaurant for years and years. On our last visit to Tucson, we made sure to come here, knowing that this visit might be our last one ever, since this restaurant has been so dear to us for so long. I'm a vegetarian now and unfortunately have some difficulty finding things on the menu that are safe for me to eat. I tried the California Sand this time, but it was only okay-- the avocado was easily the best part, but the mixture of cheeses, the raw mushrooms, and the aioli were all a bit disappointing. BUT the reason this place deserves four (or five!) stars is for the zucchini muffins. They are so good my mom used to send them to me at summer camp and at college. The chef has had to take the walnuts out for safety reasons but they are still phenomenal. And, what's more, when we told the chef that I was getting married and that I was assembling a recipe book of the dishes most important to my family and friends (which would naturally include the muffins), he was kind enough to give me a version of the recipe (with secret family ingredients left out, of course!). This gesture exemplifies what I love most about Buddy's-- the warm atmosphere and feeling of home.

We had dinner there last night & it was very good. The sourdough bread was an instant hit & my wife ordered French onion soup which she thought was good. I ordered chicken fried steak & mashed potatoes with gravy. It was the best chicken fried steak I've eaten since my grandmother made it 50 years ago. I call this comfort food.
