Since my first rib from here in 1997, this has been one of my favorite places for BBQ in Birmingham. The atmosphere is casual and family friendly, which can be good or bad depending on what sort of night you want to have. With that in mind, your drinks are limited to soda or sweet tea; no beer here. With that aside, the ribs are out of this world and I always make it a point to stop when I am in the area.

I came in after not eating here for a cpl of years to see if the attitude had changed. It hasnt. I stopped coming here bc our previous experience was horrible .I never will forget my waitress name..Meagan C. She was rude and condescending and was more interested in her text messages and friend sitting at the bar. Came in recently and the staff was horrible and rude not to mention it was the toughest m o st dry bbq I have ever had. 0 stars but I had to give at least one. Who ever sold this business to these rude bunch of kids wasted alot of investment

If you haven't been to Johnny Ray's in Pelham in the past year, it's time to go back. Previously, it seemed like it was staffed with high school kids who didn't care anything about service, fried items were frequently undercooked, and they always seemed to be "out" of certain things (one night they were out of pie--their signature item!). I'm not sure if there was a management change or if the existing management just cleaned house. Going there now is a totally different experience. I stick with the signature item--barbecue, and I can vouch that the pork, beef, and chicken are all good. I prefer a sandwich, and they offer both regular and jumbo sizes. Barbecue plates and ribs are also available. They offer many choices for side items--baked beans, slaw, green beans, fried okra, Mac & cheese, French fries, potato salad--or for slightly more a side salad, baked potato, onion rings, or fried pickles. Of course, the other signature item at Johnny Ray's is the pie--available in Chocolate, lemon, banana, and coconut. My taste prefers the first two, but all varieties have their fans. The high schoolers have been replaced with a more seasoned staff, and service is now fast and friendly. There is a drive-thru window for to-go orders. Beer is served, but no other alcohol is available. Prices are very reasonable with sandwiches in the $5-$9 range and entree plates ranging from $7.99-$13.99. The real deal is the sandwich special--a sandwich, fries, drink, and pie slice for only $10.49. Johnny Ray's is a great choice for two great southern specialties--BBQ and icebox pie!

Stopped by for dinner while we are in town. It is in a storefront and the decor was not good. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. I had beef sandwich and my husband had pork sandwich. The meat was dry and there was only one type of BBQ sauce, which was OK, but we like to try different ones. Sides were so-so. No garlic bread, which we like to have with BBQ. The coconut pie was good.

Pleasantly surprised! Stopped by after accidentally passing Jim and Nicks. Was hungry and didn't want a chain. Pulled up and was a little apprehensive. It was a Tuesday night and only 3 tables had diners, but I must say the food was delicious! I had the pork plate and my husband had the 1/2 chicken plate and we are stuffed...still managed to eat a piece of chocolate pie though!

Visited today for a meeting with one of my staff. Waitress was nice & she seemed anxious to take our order & get drinks out quickly. I ordered inside pulled bbq pork sandwich with a side of fries with a sweet tea to drink. The sandwich seemed small & the bbq didn't have much taste, seemed a bit dry. The portion of fries were large & pretty good but I really expected good bbq. I was there at 1:00 PM & the restaurant seemed rather empty. My personal opinion was it seemed old & pretty dimly lit. Prices were high compared to portions & quality of food. People were nice but doubt I'll ever return.

This place was great. The staff was very friendly. And the restaurant was very clean. We ordered beef brisket and ribs. Both were very good. Awesome potato salad. Just like grandma's. I would definitely recommend for BBQ lovers.

My wife and I ate here a couple of weeks ago. They were out of Diet Coke, so I ordered water. The water was cloudy and had a foul taste. We ordered an appetizer of fried pickles, my wife ordered barbecue chicken and I got a pork plate. Despite only two other couples in the restaurant, it was 45 minutes before we got our food. The fried pickles appetizer arrived after our meal. My pork plate was okay, but my wife's chicken was extremely dry. We were unimpressed with this location. We will not be back.

I'm not sure what happened to all the previous reviews of this place but I originally came here because of them. I'm back in town and had to stop in again because of the excellent service I received the last time I was here. In addition to their bbq, they are also known for their huge, yummy pies. When I told the the manager it was my first time visiting them and that I came in because of the reviews and heard about the pies but simply could not fit another bite in my mouth, he was so kind, he sent me home with a slice! The bbq is tasty. I had the chopped pork. It has a really nice smokiness to it. The sauce is well balanced being slightly spicy with just a tad of sweetness. I also had the fried pickles, which were a bit to salty for my taste, but not bad and the cole slaw. I of course had a big slice of pie to take home. Overall, solid food, good prices, and great service.

Our party of five had the loaded potato with pork and four pork sandwiches with two sides. We tried a variety of sides. Everything was really good. The pork was tender, just a little dry, but flavored well. The sides were like grandma would make - that homemade look and taste. They only have one sauce - it's their own recipe - it is sweet with a spicy finish. Tasted alone it reminds you of sloppy joe sauce but once on the pork it tastes best. Our check in via Yelp gave us a free digital appetizer coupon that they took without hesitation. We got the bacon cheddar fries. They use the big crinkle cut fries and the appetizer was almost the best food of the evening. Once we added their homemade ranch it definitely was the best dish. This place is pretty awesome. Definitely recommend. The interior looks fresh and clean but I don't think the restrooms have been updated. If I totally judged a restaurant by its restrooms then I would think the place was a little sketchy. Day and night difference between the dining area and the restroom. Friendly staff and good food will put this place on our regular list. The nasty crapper cost JR's a five star rating.

Restaurant is clean and comfortable. Servers are friendly. Prices are great. Here's what I had... Regular Hamburger and Fries ($6.00, with cheese +$0.50): 1/4 lb. of juicy, fresh ground chuck; soft Sunbeam bun; a little heavy on the mustard and ketchup; comes dressed with lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickle; very basic, but one of the best burgers I've had in a while; fries were large crinkle cuts. Overall: B+ Chocolate Pie ($3.00): absolutely amazing; blanket of fresh whipped cream over thick, creamy chocolate filling. Overall: A Haven't had the BBQ at this particular location, but it's always solid at the others.
