This place is a pitiful excuse for a restaurant! First off another table waited over a hour just for their check to be cashed out. Food taste like it frozen and just reheated. Not long after eating there I was sick as a dog all night long! I would avoid this place if possible because clearly the owner does not care about or know how to manage a restaurant. The band was awful and I wish I could leave zero stars. This place will be out of buisness in less than a year guarantee it!

First time here... The smothered pork chops are lick the plate good. They were moist flavorable and tender. Everything was reasonably priced and the sides were a decent proportion.

The management cares here. alot. Super friendly. The bartender knows how to make a cocktail with finesse. The food is different( in a good way. ) Careful, the curry chicken has bones. But really good. Check them out. Refreshingly different.

The one star is for the one that perhaps crashed into this restaurant shortly before our visit . We dine out as much as we eat at home , NORMALLY, going to the same half dozen DEPENDABLE , PLEASANT restaurants . Went in on a Thursday , 12:30 Lunch .First visit , thought we would try something new . Boy would that idea ever end up SUCKING . Dining room 3/ 4 full . Over excited used car saleswoman / waitress asked was this our first visit , we said yes as she laid out the ZZZZZ specials , yada yada yada . Tables continued to come in after we ordered , and MOST were served while we WAITed to WAIT on refills from our recently DECEASED WAITress , whom NEVER came back to table to explain the delay in our order , refill beverages , acknowledge our existence , suggest that we go to Hell , whatever . AT 1:25 I flagged her down and asked WHAT THE HELL ?? She had a momentary lapse of brain power and took out her ticket book as if she needed to take our order ZZZZZZZ ."OH YEAH , SORRY "!! , She says as her brain lands back on Earth . "Let me check on that " . 1:35 : Zombie waitress returns to the scene of the crime . "I do apologize , they had to throw out old product but yours is in the oven now " . An HOUR AND 5 MINUTES AFTER ARRIVING , WE LEAVE , AS BOB MARLEY - FRIED BRAIN STAFF LOOKS BAFFLED , MANAGER ON DUTY AT HIS COMPUTER , SITTING IN DINING ROOM . KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK , JAKE AND STAFF !!!! We left there and spent our 30 bucks with a cafe that OBVIOUSLY needs more money and a good review in the bank than y'all do. Perhaps y'all should call Jake from State Farm . He might have some ideas about how to TAKE CARE OF FIRST TIME / RETURN BUSINESS . Yes, crap happens that is beyond a restaurant's control . NEGLIGENCE AINT ONE OF THEM . If THAT happens too often , you wind up crucified on online reviews and dead in the water before too long . But don't worry , we're happy and got fed and taken care of down the road . Good luck with that

Jake's had great service but the food was not as expected! We started with Fried Mozzarella sticks which were the frozen kind and they were undercooked. We ordered Chicken and Waffles and the Jake's Burger and fries... The beef party was a super thin frozen patty and the fries were the frozen crinkle cut type. Everything was flavorless. Will not go again!!!

Even though we read the reviews, my husband and I still wanted to try this place. We walked in and it was completely dead for a Sunday after church when most places are usually packed. Didn't let that bother us though. I ordered the salmon croquettes, which they were out of so I subbed for the jerk chicken. Food was quick to the table. Chicken was tender but the spices and jerk seasoning was not impressive. Rice was super salty and the cornbread muffin was so dry it completely crumbled as soon as I touched it. The greens on the other hand was delicious. My husband had the whole wings which he didn't touch after one bite. I love Jamaican food but this was nothing compared to plates I had in the past from other places. So we found out the hard way and won't be back.

Disclaimer: I am not from the South. I have also never been to the physical restaurant. But I just ate an office lunch catered by Jake's and it was some of the most delicious food I have had. The greens were extremely tasty with a great texture. The Mac and cheese was insane, and I don't usually like macaroni and cheese. The sweet potatoes, of which I am also fairly impartial, was a delight. And the Jamaican chicken was juicy and had a mild but delicious Caribbean flavor that, combined with the jerk barbecue sauce, got better and better with every bite, like some amazing Willy Wonka invention. I can't stop thinking about that food. Seriously. The only thing I didn't like were the small corn muffins - too dry for my likes.

I'm assuming that all of the five stars for this place are from people who have never had REAL Caribbean food. There were 3 tables during a week day lunch and it took about 10 mins for us to get greeted and sat. Then our server let us no she didn't know she had our table, complained a tad more, and then said she'd go ahead and help us. We ordered the Tuesday special and the combo plate... AWFUL! The coconut bread tasted like raw dough. My corn bread was so dry that it broke crumbled in my hands and all over me as soon as I picked it up. The jerk sauce tastes like a bbq sauce with a splash of off the shelf jerk sauce. And there's no way they marinade that over night. The curry is bland as can be along with the other sauces with the combo and special. We had fried okra and Mac n cheese and the default Caribbean rice... Mac and cheese was stale and tasteless. Rice was just rice. Nothing special. The okra was the best thing in the meal but it's because all they had to do was unfreeze it in the fryer. Worst part... We didn't take but 4 bites and gave up. But we didn't want to waste food so we took it back to our kids who eat anything. THEY EVEN PASSED ON IT. Will not be returning.

Quick Update Hello Yelpers out there! So my last visit to Jake's was prompted by one of my girlfriends who had been dying to put this food menu to the test; from all the "hype" she had heard of course. Sadly, I was a little embarrassed by the service for starters. The waitress asked my friend , after she had been waiting for an extended period of time, "M'am what did you order again?" Luckily, the bartender had just then given out a round of free drinks, and my friend accepted. So we continued to girl chat until her food finally arrived, and again, it seemed that the wonderful flavors that I had once Bragged about had faded away. My food I really thought was bland, but I didn't want to express it to my friend , especially after I had been an advocate of how good their food was when the place had initially opened. From her suggestions, she might ride back for the music on a Friday night, but she wasn't impressed with meal. Although we went on a Friday night, and she did enjoy the live music, and the layout of how "pretty" everything looked, I had to update an keep my yelpers informed, that even on a slow night, and you're really hungry, you might want to eat a small snack prior to arrival just in case due to the longer than normal wait times and poor waiter service who forgets your order completely.

I LOVE THIS PLACE!! So refreshing to have something different in Shelby County! The plantains were cooked perfectly and I loved the jerk chicken sauce. The environment is contemporary and if you come on the weekends the live bands add the perfect touch. The meals are not very expensive and you get several different things to choose from.. in other words if someone in your party doesn't want Caribbean food there is other main stream meals to choose from. My fave's are of course plantains, greens, jerk chicken wings and last but not least the sweet potatoes!

I don't know where these other people were eating at but I had just tasted my jerk wings and they are bursting with flavor, the meat falls right off the bone. I finished my meal for tomorrow lol. I had never had plantains and they were nice, I added cinnamon and they really popped then. In the restaurant it was my first time trying chicken and waffles and they were ok, if they had of spiced up those wings with more seasonings it would of really worked. I will definitely come back again for those jerk wings!!

I thought the decor was spectacular for a strip mall in Alabaster, Alabama. Just felt "out of place". I was excited to taste the food because if the ambience spoke for the food it would be nice (and maybe a little awkward). The menu was small. I ordered the Jamaican Jerk Chicken. If anything on the menu would be delicious and authentic I picked this to be the one. I was so excited! I love Jamaican food. The plate I received was bland and both the rice and chicken were over cooked. There was just no flavor and it was a huge disappointment. The highlight of the dish was a side of plantains. The thought of a flavorful Jamaican restaurant opening in Alabaster was too good to be true... I have had Jamaican food a few times and have those experiences to compare this place to and unfortunately it was a big let down.

I had the Jerk Chicken from here recently and it was far from true Jerk Chicken. They heavily coated the chicken with jerk flavored BBQ sauce and the chicken was tough overcooked and mostly inedible. If you like true Jamaican this is not it. It was just an Alabama BBQ variation. I hadn't tried anything else but if they do Jerk Chicken so poorly I'm not going back.

Well, let's start with the positives. Came in on a Friday around 3pm, and we were one of two tables in the restaurant. The whole feel of the place is very eclectic-casual. The menu is not super extensive but it was hard to decide what I wanted, because I love to try new things! I ended up ordering the curry shrimp, hot, and the jerk wings (from the appetizer menu, but with my main meal). All of this was delicious! Definitely get the curry hot if you are a fan of spicy food - it cleaned out my sinuses real good. Also, since entrees come with a side, I ended up choosing mac and cheese (after I was told by the waitress that my initial choice, cornbread, would take 15 minutes to prepare and they had just put some in the oven). Now on to the not great stuff. While I was completely satisfied with my food, but my partner was not. He ordered the burger, which comes with grilled pineapple and jerk sauce. The burger that he received was very reminiscent of cafeteria burgers we ate while growing up - thin, crispy, and too chewy. The fries that came with tasted like the frozen kind you buy and bake in the oven at home. In short, this entree was not worth $8. We waited upwards of 15-20 minutes for our food to come out, and since I had been warned about the cornbread, I assumed this was an extensive wait time. Not only that, but at some point our waitress came out from the kitchen and asked us, "Oh, did they not bring your food yet?" when we were sitting with nothing in front of us but our drinks. Then, she brought our food out, which leads me to wonder why it was surprising our food hadn't been brought out when she was the one who would have done it? She was nice, but it's kind of unreasonable to not know that your only table hasn't gotten their food yet. The unfortunate ending to our meal was our waitress bringing our card back to say that their credit card machine had just gone down, and did we have another form of payment? Since our total was right at $30, the twenty dollar bill in my pocket didn't cut it. She then went to alert the manager, and another 15 minutes later they rebooted their system and we were able to pay. I feel like they have been open long enough to know the necessary steps to fix their credit card machine when it goes down. At least enough to say "It's going to be x minutes, would you like to wait or pay some other way?" Apparently the closest ATM is across Hwy 31 in another shopping mall, so it's to a huge inconvenience to the customer if they don't have cash. All in all, while our waitress was nice, and apologetic about the whole credit card deal, simple pleasantries can't make up for the rest of the experience. I might come back with a friend, but I unfortunately won't be able to drag my partner back here for round two.

I don't know about anything else but the jerk chicken is far from authentic. It was ok but I probably won't be back.

Hmmmm....the food was pretty good....I jus think that carribean food has an acquired taste....I had the chicken fricaseed.... the meat was very tender...the rice was Ok....loved the plaintains.....ohh and my cocoa bread was very moist....overall I liked it.... the service was excellent....the atmosphere was pretty cool.... but the live band was just a bit too loud for my taste.....Jakes is a cool place to eat... if you have a taste for something...different...authentic....

Arrived and first thought " wow this place has nice decor". We stood and waited, and waited, and waited, and finally someone came and seated us. We ordered and they were out of jerk wings. It took the waitress 10 minutes to find out if they could substitute wings for regular jerk chicken. They were just not ready to open for business plain and simple. When the food finally came out we were in shock. Where to begin........ The jerk chicken tastes like grilled chicken with a terrible mix of sweet and sour sauce and jerk sauce. Unlike the menu states, the chicken was not marinaded overnight and tasted bland. The stewed chicken was dry and tough and the sauce tasted burnt. The curry chicken although tender, tasted flavorless. Let's talk about the sides. The Mac and cheese was dry and I would have preferred a dollar box of Kraft Mac and cheese over what they served. The rice had no flavor. The fried okra you could tell was frozen but was actually the best part of the meal. The corn bread was so dry that when my girlfriend tried to break a piece off, it literally crumbled all over her lap and plate. The fried plantain I can't even talk about......... Sorry I needed a minute to gather myself. On a positive note, the cokes were well carbonated.
