The place is a dump but has some really, really good bar-b-que. The combo platter is served with smoked sausage, fries, coleslaw, and bread and is hard to beat. A combo platter with a drink costs around $7. A regular plate is a combo plate without the sausage. The sauce is good but I have had better. Parking is really a problem and there is usually a line waiting for it to open at 11:00. It is really small (although they recently added more seating) and can be really tough to get in between 11:00-12:30. The food is worth 4 stars but the whole package is only a 3 for me.

My husband is at the NCO academy at Gunter AFB and was craving BBQ. I did not appreciate reading that it was described as a dump.....it's not !!! I myself am a small business owner and can appreciate another small business:) I'm not a Fancy Schmancy person. The business is Clean, prices are very reasonable, the menu was simple, the people were helpful and friendly, and the food was good :). Keep up the Good Work!!

Came down from the North to try this place. Decent to better-than-average BBQ. Basic menu. The owners did not waste any time or money with the decor inside. Very friendly staff. Very clean. Impressive BBQ area where you watch everything cook. All the locals say that this is the best BBQ place in the area. Everything is reasonably priced.

Blink and you'll miss it. We actually got heaps of their food for our wedding reception. Open for lunch during the week. Lunch and dinner Friday and Saturday. Yellow stained from years of smoking butts, but not dirty. Simple menu choices of sandwiches or a plate with meat, beans, fries, and slaw. They accommodate my order "inside chop" and call your number to grab your tray at the window. Great brownies by the register that are kinda smokey flavored because they probably cook it in the smoker :) no frills just food

Damn good BBQ! Simple menu. Chopped and pulled pork. And sausage. That's it. But what they don't have in selection they make up for in taste. If you are wanting a Pork sandwich and chips with some sweet tea - this is your place.

While I'm not sure I would classify it as a dump like the other reviewers, I do think Sam's is aware of their, uh, uncomplicated decor. It says right there on the sign: "Nothing fancy, just good barbecue." In some respects, "nothing fancy" applies to the barbecue itself - you get your choice of chopped pork or sausage here, and nothing else. The former is as tender as you might expect from a place whose smoker is constantly filled with cooked butts, the team of high schoolers diligently working the clever to chop them up to meet customer demand. The sausage is new to me. Whereas a lot of barbecue sausages are loosely-packed pieces of finely-chopped or ground pieces of pork, the sausage here is so heavily condensed that it's almost like biting into a piece of a pork chop that was shoved into a casing. Not bad, but not really my kind of texture. Sandwiches are super cheap, and even if you live high on the hog (barbecue pun) and go for the combo plate, it's not that expensive, and you get to try pretty much the entire restaurant. A pile of pork is topped with slices of sausage, their popular sauce (tangy like mustard-based sauces, but dark and a little sweet), a mound of fries, for some reason, along with some mushy beans, slaw, and a slice of bread. Sam's is what I imagined most of Montgomery's barbecue to be like, though in my travels thus far it doesn't seem to be that prevalent. Probably why Sam's represented Montgomery all the way to the finals in the Year of Alabama Food's barbecue bracket.

Place is a hole in the wall which I'm a fan of. BBQ was ok. Nothing to write home about. But good enough to right about on yelp haha. Menu is super tiny. Not much for sides but basics: Fries, beans, coleslaw, and chips.

Limited menu options and the place just feels dirty. Staff was very friendly but there really isn't table service. Order when you walk in and they call your number when it's ready. BBQ was average at best and I found myself wanting for something to make me want to return. I ordered the sandwich plate (sandwich, fries, cole slaw, beans) with a water--$8.50. First time, last time.

Excellent smoked chopped pork, fries and slaw. The best barbecue beans I have ever had. $23 for two plates and drinks. It didn't look like a lot of food when it first arrived but I could not eat it all.

Not much to look at, but by far the best BBQ in town. Just down home, no-frills good eats!

Sam's is definately a dump, but it has some of the best BBQ in town. At lunch time, a line can develop quickly due to the large number of take-out orders that come in. Unlike Country's or other BBQ places in town, Sam's gives you actual meat in its pulled pork - not just crispy stringy bits. The atmosphere is definately low with a messy outside and plastic silverware and plates, but it is worth the eat and money.
