A dessert place in Montgomery that closes at 10pm on a weekday?! Who knew such a rarity existed! Since Yelp said it did a friend and I hopped into our car to see if it was real. Real it is, and although they served no gelato today (didn't ask if that was normal or they were out) I was still grateful they were actually open so I tried the mango Fancy Nancy instead. For you Hawaiians out there get a medium as it will then be the size of an ice cream slush. That's exactly what a "Fancy Nancy" is except the Italian ice is a little more solid so it will need to melt somewhat to get the slush effect. I had gotten a small as it looked more than large enough for dessert, and for a whopping $3 cash (tax included) I was handed the item in the attached picture. My guess is they don't offer "large" as there's no use. They put so much Italian ice and soft serve outside the cup that it rivals the amount inside. The small I received was more than enough for 2 to share so we did, and tipped them what would have been the second dessert as the gal behind the counter was so friendly. The mango was refreshing, the soft serve yummy, and if you don't even want to get out of the car they have drive-through. It was definitely worth our expedition and as they're open till 11 on weekends *gasp* we will be back!

GREAT Italian Ice for an AWESOME price! The wife has been taking the kids there and getting them the small cups of Italian Ice. I went and tried a small chocolate chip cookie dough Fancy Nancy. I was blown off of my feet that they could pull off a cookie dough Italian Ice. Will DEFINITELY be back and will frequent when in the area!

There's not a whole lot to Nancy's. Italian ice isn't exactly a gourmet food, and the mildly-interested high schoolers that man the register are proof of this. But the Fancy Nancy is a work of genius. Alternating between the tart ice and the creamy soft serve is a wonderment of contrasting flavors, tied together through their similar texture, and all for a couple bucks.

I love this little corner shop. One of the few places in Montgomery that's not a chain and seems to be thriving. Fun benches outside and teenagers working the store makes for a youthful, kid-oriented environment. And man is it delicious! Treat yourself to a Fancy Nancy! A small is plenty for 1 person. :)

Love love love love this place! Where do I begin? When you first walk into this little ice shop, you are greeted with the nicest ladies behind the counter. They will offer you samples of any flavor you'd like. The ice is so fine and fluffy (yes! fluffy ice!) you can't stop shoveling it into your mouth. Some of the flavors, like strawberry, have little bits of fruit in it. That's when you know this is good stuff. The soft serve is so rich and creamy unlike the soft serve from the fast food joints. My favorite is the fancy nancy, which is layers of ice and soft serve. Try it, it's heaven!

Good Italian ice; I usually go for the inverted fancy nancy (soft serve-Italian ice-soft serve, instead of the other way around). Autrey family is great, too.

I had to ask my friend to repeat herself. Surely she didn't just say... A new gelato shop in Montgomery? Gelato? Here?! A richer, higher-quality variant of ice cream, gelato is considered the quintessential Italian treat-- and as you'd expect from a dessert from the home of the Renaissance, gelato is usually approached with a high degree of creativity. Whereas a local ice cream shop will give you a scoop of butter pecan in a cone, an Italian gelato vendor would sell you a bowl of raspberry gelato carefully sculpted into the shape of a rose and accompanied by a bit of fruit. To share a cup of quality gelato with a loved one is a finer experience than ice cream alone can provide. With that in mind, my loved one and I drove down to Nancy's Italian Ice. The location is fantastic: It's directly across the street from Rave Motion Pictures, in the Winn-Dixie shopping center. Inside, you'll meet the Autrey Family, a fine group of folks that have provided us with warm and friendly service each time we've stopped by; and from there you can sample their menu of desserts, which include Italian ice in several different flavors, a handful of cupcakes and cookies, and a single flavor of gelato. Yes, only one flavor. However, this flavor changes every day, and we've been having a great time stopping by Nancy's each day to see what's new. Regular-size cups are $3.50 each, with a large cup available for $5.00, perfect for couples to split; and Nancy herself is usually behind the counter, encouraging her customers to try a free sample of that day's flavor. As for the gelato itself: In terms of texture and richness, this is definitely a cut above any ice cream shop in town-- but not above the better varieties of gelato I've had in my life. Simply put, it's a little too sweet. When one samples a cup of cappucino gelato, one should taste cappucino first, not sugar. Nevertheless, it's quite good-- in some cases, excellent, as with the pistachio flavor from earlier in the week-- and even if gelato were not available here, Nancy's would still be my dessert shop of choice in Montgomery thanks to the wonderful service we've received when visiting.

great italian ice, great service, great price, and lots of free (and yummy) samples. you must try a fancy nancy (italian ice with yummy soft serve). i recent ate the famous shaved ice in hawaii, and this place is at least as good as that ice. of course, the great advantage of nancy's over hawaiian ice is that nancy's is only a short (and cheap) car ride from anywhere in montgomery.

Upon reading about the new and only gelato shop here in Montgomery, my fiance and I went to try this place out. The hours are great, open till 11 and closed on Sundays. There's some cute wall arts of owls along with other owl figurines, tables and chairs, free wi fi and a TV. There's only one flavor of gelato per day so the choices are easy. They also offer an array of goodies such as muffins, cookies, and Italian Ice with whipped cream. I've only ever tried their gelato such as Caramel and Pistachio. I like the Pistachio better. =) I believe the draw of this place is if you want something different from the traditional ice cream, this is the place. A nice sit down shop to spend some quality time with the kids while teaching them what a gelato is.

If you're from Philly, prepared to be grossly disappointed, but, for Montgomery, AL, this is an alright alternative to regular ice cream shops. But, don't kid yourself. Nancy's Italian Ice is NOT gelato!!! It can barely be called Italian Ice. If you've ever traveled outside of the Southeast, you would know this to be fact. Gelato is a richer, creamier version of ice cream and is not to be confused with Italian Ice which is a frozen concoction of fruit juice, fruit pieces and sugar frozen in such a way that it's smooth (not "icy"). There is no dairy in Italian Ice, while gelato is dairy based. Having said that, the Italian Ice at Nancy's is average. I find the overuse of food colorings and dyes to be distracting, and the flavors taste (and look) very artificial to me. The soft serve tastes like the cheap stuff you'd get out of a machine at a Chinese Buffet...artifically flavored and icy. The "Fancy Nancy" is nothing unique to Italian Ice shops found all over the Northeast, it's just that here, they have their own cute name for the half ice/half soft serve concoction. I wish this place would offer one or more Sugar Free options of ice on a regular basis. The one time I asked, the woman behind the counter acted like I had asked her to stop the earth from revolving around the sun. For those on a sugar restricted diet, an offering of Sugar Free ices would be most welcome. The service is spotty. Because they seem to have a ton of regular customers, prepared to be ignored while they chat and "catch up" with the locals. For now though, Nancy's is the best alternative offering in Montgomery. But, I have high hopes that something better will come along...
