Garrett's was pretty good (for montgomery). I would put it in the same category as La Jolla or City Grill. Although, I almost didn't get to eat there, when we walked in the hostess was no where to be seen. After waiting almost 10 minutes the piano player got up to get her. We were also skeptical because the place was empty at 7:45 on a Saturday night. Well, it turns out they had another dinning room off to the side that was moderately filled. I had the duck confit appetizer and the prime rib entree followed by the panda cotta for dessert. My friend had the shrimp and fried green tomato appetizer and the stuffed chicken for her entree. Everything was good, especially the dessert and the service was decent as well. However, Nothing made me want to run back there, but I really haven't found anyplace in Montgomery that has. Overall worth a shot if you want something more high end.

Wow! All I can say is Wow! What a completely unexpected surprise. The atmosphere was elegant yet comfortable. Food was exceptionally well prepared, flavorful, and a delight to the eye. The service, on a packed house night, was friendly and professional. I would make this Restuarant your go to spot above all others. I found it comparable to any fine dining experience I've had at home in Houston. Well done!

Tonight my cousin and a couple of friends had dinner here. Our server was Lauren and she was the perfect hostess/waitress/bartender. We enjoyed the spring rolls and oysters as appetizers and they were perfectly cooked and delicious. My dinner was the sea bass with cheese stuffed ravioli and asparagus. This was sublime. If you enjoy fresh, flavorful dining, then don't miss out on this location!

We went to Garrett's on a Saturday night, and unfortunately they seemed to be preoccupied with a couple of large groups. It took about 35 minutes before the waitress finally came to take our food order. She also promised to bring a basket of bread, but that took another 15 minutes. All in all, our food was very good; we ordered the duck and grouper, and the dessert was outstanding. But our service was very disappointing, especially for one of the more upscale restaurants in town.

The chef at Garrett's (Gary Garner) has an amazing ability to take some old classics and jazz them up with either a 'fusion' style, or just a simple tweak to a sauce, and make a completely new dish. The seafood is always great, and always fresh. Fried oysters and crab cakes are my favorites, but the tuna and the grouper are quite special too. They do a braised beef short rib ossobuco style that is excellent, and the cowboy ribeye is enough for two. Wine selection is probably the best in Montgomery, and in and of itself is worth visiting them for. The price range for dinner is on the upper end, but for the quality of food and service, well worth it. They also do lunch and early dinner as well. Nice to visit the parentals in MGM and have a fancy schmancy dinner out! I had seabass, fried oyster appetizer, vanilla creme brûlée, and pecan pie martini w ice cream. Tasty. I def recommend sea bass and oyster. Dad had grilled grouper which was more meatier in texture. Wait staff was professional. It looks like lots of graduation celebrations that night, so I felt everyone did a great job.

First, we were greeted by a hostess who seemed to be busy arranging menus. She didn't smile and took a little too long to seat us when the restaurant was nearly empty. After being seated, our waitress, Angie, greeted us warmly and asked if we would like something to drink. We ordered a bottle of wine and she promptly returned with our drinks. We then placed an order for the sesame crusted oysters and we told Angie that we would like a little more time to choose our entrees. She quickly returned with our wine and we placed our orders. My boyfriend ordered the crab stuffed grouper and I ordered the tuna and mushroom risotto. The oysters were delivered to our table very quickly. They were delicious and perfectly prepared. They were lightly battered and juicy and they were served with a very nice sauce. We were excited about our meals after tasting the oysters, but the rest of the meal really let us down. My boyfriend's grouper was topped with cold crab salad. It did not work with the hot grouper. His pasta was overcooked and tasted as though it had been sitting in the kitchen for too long. I ordered my tuna medium rare and it was overcooked. It was chewy and tasted like it had been frozen. The mushroom risotto that accompanied the tuna was tasteless and chewy. The teriyaki sauce on the tuna clashed with the mushroom risotto. It tasted like barbecue sauce on pasta. Teriyaki + mushroom risotto = NASTY! Combine wasabi and it equals double NASTY! The prices were steep for the quality. Our meal totaled $130 with tip. It was really tacky for the restaurant receipt to suggest gratuity amounts, much less for the tip to be based on the total including the tax. All and all, it was a very romantic and enjoyable date. We laughed a lot. On our way to our hotel room, we saw drove past and Outback and we were sorry that we didn't stop there instead. Outback has some really good salmon and steaks and the prices are right - LOL.

The tagline for Garrett's is "the art of food," which didn't fill me with confidence that the restaurant was going to be very good - if your food is good, you don't have to stencil that fact onto the doors. The last of my fine dining experiences in Montgomery, Garrett's was also faced with the failed promises of a variety of other restaurants in the city, charging too much and delivering too little. Oh, and the night prior I drove up to Birmingham to dine at the Hot and Hot Fish Club, so my expectations were still reeling from one of the best restaurants in the southern United States. Good luck, Gary! They're obviously trying to create a high falootin' atmosphere, and the restaurant does look extremely nice with a lot of contemporary flair and a way of making it seem a lot bigger than it is. When I ate at Martha's Place a few weeks ago, I drove past it in that strip mall without realizing it - it's not quite where you'd expect, though you forget about it once you walk past the piano in the entryway. I walked in, sat down, and ordered a beer from the tap, which turned out to be a little more difficult than I expected, as the fridge was so cold that it froze the taps. Not a big deal in the moment, but it doesn't contribute to the atmosphere they're trying to perpetuate. Says the chef on the website (which annoyingly and automatically started playing a video upon visiting), "It starts by making sure everything is freshly prepared with absolutely no shortcuts. From the meats to the sauces, everything has to be top of the line". This clearly didn't apply to the bread. The complimentary loaf they bring out prior to the meal is the kind that's frozen elsewhere and finished in the kitchen. It created a slightly stale texture and a crust that turned to crumbs as soon as I picked it up. The neatly-piped compound butter did nothing to save it. This bread appeared in my soup appetizer as a crostini on the side that was topped with a bit of melted cheese but was otherwise unpleasantly stale to the point where I'm surprised they would send it out. It's confusing, because the vegetable soup du jour was a hearty vegetable soup - while not necessarily appropriate for the season - was a large mingling of fresh vegetables that was simple, but good. The entree was a couple pieces of Gulf grouper, topped with a cold marinated crab salad, served atop a pile of baked linguini, and with a bunch of blips and bloops of sauces here and there around the plate. I'm not sure I agree with serving the crab cold, but there were some good chunks of it in there, at least. The fish was seasoned well and flaked easily with my fork. The linguini was the puzzler - the starch predominantly brought notes of cheese to the plate, which not only violated the cardinal rule of pairing cheese with seafood, but created an oil slick of grease on my plate. Not appetizing. I would have much prefered the vegetable-protein-starch ratio be slanted more towards the vegetable, because I nearly confused my four haricot vert as a garnish. The true garnish was the sprig of thyme that sat there doing nothing. What, am I supposed to strip the leaves from it and add it to my meal? That's your job. Let's grow up and stop placing inedible garnishes on my plate. Truth be told, the saving grace of Garrett's is that they do the basics very well, and the quality of the grouper was what sealed it for me. (The price didn't hurt either - the majority of the dishes here were priced slightly below the $30 mark, as opposed to most of their peers.) The problem is that they try too hard, attempting to make my dinner an art deco piece. The best meals I've had in my life weren't good because of how abstract they looked, they were good because the person making it had a firm understanding of seasoning and cookery. The secret to "the art of food" is that it doesn't need to be art at all to be a masterpiece.

While the atmosphere of this place is nice, I always end up leaving underwhelmed. The food is okay, but not worth the price. The service is hit or miss. I would go to La Jolla instead if you're looking for a nice place to have a meal.

An elegant dinner. Greeted warmly by "the hostess with the mostess". Attentive staff. Piano in the background playing Dr. Zhivago. Dim lighting sets the mood for romance.

This is expensive, disappointing, boring, badly-prepared food. Garrett's seems promising but in the end is a letdown. Underwhelming & disappointing describes the experience here. I agree with another reviewer who said, "The tagline for Garrett's is "the art of food," which didn't fill me with confidence that the restaurant was going to be very good - if your food is good, you don't need to stencil it on the door." I couldn't agree more. The only "art" here is stenciled on the door or hanging on the walls. Don't expect it on your plate. There is a decent selection of wines, some very nice wines even. Yet for a restaurant with a lofty motto reading "the art of food," Garrett's has not bothered to even invest in decent wine glasses. All glasses are the same size, shape and weight. They are strangely thick and remind me of a chain eatery. Appetizer: Black bean & chicken spring roll (one small spring roll mind you). It seemed old, likely frozen and fried "to order." You can get a better app anywhere (including the drive-thru at Sonic). MAIN COURSES: STRIKE ONE: BBQ bacon-wrapped shrimp: Inedible as the bacon was three pepper bacon (NOT described on the menu). The shrimp themselves are a bit tough, chewy and overcooked. I suspect these are frozen or old. Also, the bacon is only about 50% cooked. The dish is removed and I begin the wait to reorder and finally see a replacement entree. Apparently, this is not a pressing concern. My husband has all but finished his entree before the crab cakes come out. STRIKE TWO: Mrs. Paul's crab cakes. No lump crab or lobster. These crab cakes are so bad I think I'm being pranked. Where's the camera? These things look like Mrs. Paul's frozen fish fillets, but worse. They have bizarre sprigs of rosemary (or who knows what) sticking out of them like antennae. The chef is apparently fascinated with garnishing all dishes this way. This is "fine dining" ala Garrett's. Order these at your own peril. They are quite simply the worst crab cakes. Ever. My husband has the pan-seared, bone-in, pork chop. It comes with a small ramekin of mac & cheese. This mac & cheese looks old, congealed and has a strange amount of oil (grease) pooled at the bottom of the pasta. My husband reports his pork chop is ok, but nothing special. More antennae sprig garnish = more fine dining. By this point we are just fed up and ready to leave before antennae show up in dessert. We skip dessert and coffee, get the check and go elsewhere for our final course. STRIKE THREE: The chef is in and out of the dining room. He is aware of the problems with my food yet does nothing to fix it or try to salvage the meal. He offers my husband a free glass of wine (which he declines), but he does not address me directly or offer to fix it. His comment is "oh and I'm taking that off your bill." Great, since it was inedible and I returned it to the kitchen. Thanks for not making me pay for inedible food. No doubt, someone else got those same shrimp next time the dish was ordered. Atmosphere: 2/5, looks nice, but disappoints in noise level & too much chatting between staff, chef & regulars. Not romantic. Food: 2/5 (mine 0/5, husband's 2/5) Service: 3/5 (server tried, but seemed overwhelmed) Value for $: 0/5 Would I return: No Would I recommend this restaurant: No Good for dates/romance: No Garrett's motto is the art of food: The Taste The smells The experience Me thinks the chef has lost the plot. You've been warned. Take yourself to City Grille (great every time), Central (good, but hit & miss on food & service), or True (good but not as good as City Grille).

This is a good date spot in Montgomery. The food was better than average, the restaurant is modern, the staff is polite, and the decor is nice. All this comes at a price though. It's considered "fine dining" for Montgomery and they charge high prices for a typical sit-down dinner restaurant in Montgomery. The location is in a bit of an odd place. It's in a strip mall, on the north-east edge of town. I think the restaurant would be better suited downtown or in the Old Cloverdale area. I'll go back at some point.
