Yes, 5 stars. They delivered on the expectation of a tasty hot dog and burger, all with simplicity and friendly service. The fact that this place has some history in Montgomery just adds to the fun of a cheap quick lunch. I had the hot dog and burger combo with everything, giving me an opportunity to taste each. The hot dog was messy but flavorful, oozing with kraut and and chili sauce. The burger was clearly fresh made, moist, and very tasty with a soft bun. The fries were nothing more than frozen and generic, but went well with the food and wasn't meant to be the star. In the end, I've had some damn good fancy burgers and dogs in my culinary travels, but something about Chris' did it for me. Was it the history it held? The old school vibe? The friendly and fast service? The simple delicious food? Who am I to decide? I'm no southerner, and only visiting the area. But if you're coming through Montgomery and like the idea of what Chris' offers, do yourself a favor and stop by.

Oh yelp thanks again. I use you so much without sharing my appreciation! You help me find all sorts of restaurants all around the country that I find very satisfying. I hit some traffic in Montgomery and decided to pull off for supper. I pulled over without my phone and check you out. At number one on the list was this little hotdog stand with a lot of history. I figured all heck may as well, gave it a whirl couldn't stop eating. The restaurant definitely needs some updating, but it's really easy to overlook with the unique flavors of the food. I had two hotdogs one cheeseburger and an order of fries and a diet soda yeah laugh at me now a diet soda with all that. Not only does the restaurant have a long history the server at the counter has been there 29 years based on her recollection her daughter has worked her and her granddaughter works there now. I have to highly recommend anybody who's in the area of downtown Montgomery give this fine hotdog establishment an opportunity

I stopped in Montgomery on my way to Georgia. I got my haircut and the barber recommended this place. I showed up and the guy asked what i wanted. I asked for a suggestion and he suggested a hot dog. I ordered one and barely took a breath I ate it so fast. It had everything on it including their sauce. I also ordered the 3 piece chicken tender meal. It was good, but the hot dog was excellent. Great service and great greasy food. Highly recommended

Our service was excellent. And the food was just as yummy as everyone described. I went with the one and one (one hotdog and one hamburger) and was not disappointed. I don't think they've changed anything in the restaurant in 30+ years and when we first got there, we thought it was closed. We took the time to review the memorabilia on the wall and read the history of the restaurant. This place is definitely a Montgomery treasure and we will return for more eats!

Classic look inside, good food and good prices. Would definitely come back again after a fun date

Yummy! The sauce on the hot dog was great! And the onion rings are wonderful.

You have to love the history of this place. Man, if these walls could talk. Who has eaten here? Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Elvis Presley... The list goes on. The place is honestly not much to look at, and it is greasy food -- and I loved it. I love the fact that a "combo" here is a hamburger and a hot dog and fries. What more could you want? It was all quite good, and the prices are extremely reasonable. The owner's son came over to chat a bit and the service was exceptional. Highly, highly recommended!

It's a classic and a must visit when you come to town on your civil rights tour. The 'one and one' gives you a taste of a hog dog and hamburger. When you add the chili sauce your mouth will go to heaven.

Thank you Yelp! This place was amazing. Not only was the food good, the customer service was impeccable and the owner was so approachable that he even gave our kids a historical lesson. Can't believe we ate at a place Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King frequent. What a great experience. We will definitely be back! Oh and I can't forget the food is AMAZING!!

  • Todd T.

MMMMMMMMMMM! Come share the experience. Loved it and it was the best thing ever. The hamburger and hot dog was the best.

  • Brad C.

Fantastic! This is pure Montgomery tradition and a beautiful example of not judging a book by its cover. Get over the dated decor and belly up to a hot dog with everything (mustard, kruat, and chili sauce). You won't regret it.

This place is as always absolutely awesome! I had the 2 Hot Dog Combo with Fries and I snarfed it! I've been coming here since I was little and it never never disappoints! Service is always awesome too!! I'll definitely keep on coming back!!

I LOVED this place and can't wait to go back. I made a stop at Chris' for one of their world famous hot dogs. I almost took this off the list but I'm glad I didn't. It was delicious and I should have gotten more than one!!! This legendary diner, marked by the green-and-white-striped awning, opened May 1, 1917. You can get a hamburger here, but the signature dish is a Hot Dog "All the Way," a dog drenched in Chris' secret sauce, sauteed onions and kraut. From the 1940s to the late 60s, Chris' Hot Dogs was the hottest late-night spot in downtown Montgomery, staying open twenty-four hours a day serving a healthy combination of hotdogs and liquor to the likes of Hank Williams and most of everyone else in Montgomery. Of course, Hank didn't usually last the whole night before Uncle Chris kicked him out. Located just down the street from the capitol, Chris's has served to thousands of guests, including politicians, FDR, Truman, MLK, Jr., Rosa Parks, Elvis, Whoopi Goldberg when she was filming "Long Walk Home", George Wallace, among others. Chris' is still run by the second and third generations of its founding family. Gus, the grandson of Chris was working alongside his father and he took some time to tell me the story of Chris'. His grandfather, Chris Katechis, came from Greece to America. He saw hot dogs on Coney Island and brought the taste to Montgomery, where his uncle had a restaurant. One of the things he was most proud of was when he became a citizen of America. He always corrected people when they asked if he was Greek American or what not. No, he told them, he was American. He learned English by reading the paper front to back. The place is what it is. Old, run down, probably not even the cleanest but it must be at least clean enough to pass some kind of an inspection. I felt weird when I went in at first but Gus welcomed me and even put my dog in the warmer while I went to the bathroom. The interior walls are plastered with old pictures and newspaper clippings. It's very dark, kind of dingy. Gus recalled one New Years Day when Chris' sold out of hot dogs- the first time in history and he also said when the legislation is in session, they will order around 1,800 orders in a day!

  • Franklin M.

I love going to historic restaurants and while I was vacationing in Montgomery I was not going to pass this place up. The interior is first rate dirty and original, I like it that way sometimes. The owner is very friendly and talkative, glad he gave us a history lesson on the restaurant. Now for the food, which we ordered different hot dogs, they were terrible. I am not a picky eater, they were not good at all. So pass on ordering a lot of food if you just want to hang out in historic surroundings.

I was in town with my kids and love to try any local hot dog joints. This place will not disappoint. If you you've ever been to Petes famous or SAMs super in Birmingham this place is worth the stop in Montgomery!! Perfect hole in the wall dog joint with a nice help!!

    (5)
  • Jennifer G.

Hole in the wall, but has been there forever. We were there on a random Saturday after the typical lunch hour and the place was full. We sat at the counter (kids loved it). The menu is limited, only come if you are looking for greasy food two of us had cheeseburgers, the "chili" is sweeter than most but a good add. The fries and onion rings were crispy and hot right out of the fryer. The kids has chicken strips and they were good. They also will sell hot dogs plain (ordered one for my son). I am giving this 5 stars not so much for the food (while it was good and fresh and handmade, it is greasy and so not on any diet) but for the experience. It is no frills and if you are OCD about clean, shiny and new you won't love it (though their health score was posted for all to see "A" ) but the owners grandson helped us, told us all about the history, happily brought my son a new hot dog bun after he decided he really didn't want the mustard he had said he wanted and just generally made it a good history enriched experience. So many people have walked through this place and sat at the counter. Anyone who is historically significant from Montgomery has been here. Walking distance to the Capital and all the downtown places to visit, definitely worth a stop while visiting Montgomery (or a local downtown for work)

My boyfriend has been telling me about this place in his hometown for literally years! My first trip to Chris' did not disappoint, and whenever we visit from Portland, Oregon I will definitely make Chris' a priority stop. No pretension, quick, simple, & delicious food, very attentive service, and a stiff Jack & Coke-- My kinda place!!

Wasn't happy with the appearance of this place inside and the food wasn't good, did not live up to the hype at all

The hot dogs at Chris aren't really anything special. The frankfurters and buns are of a quality approximately what you would expect to find at a New York city hot dog cart, which is to say you aren't really asking many questions. Chris makes them unique by adding a generous portion of their chili sauce, which is nice but nothing mind-blowing. The main appeal for me is the building itself - weaving your way to the counter, wedging into one of the seats, and watching the utter chaos that these people put up with on a daily basis. You have one burner and one flat top situated right at the end of the counter. One lady's working the burgers on the flat top, and another lady's putting the dogs together. Despite this cramped space, they can really crank them out - if you're in a hurry, you can get a couple of dogs ready to go before you finish paying. And that guy you're paying? He's working the one register in the place, handling takeout orders, working the counter customers, and making change for the servers that are handling the booths in the annexed dining rooms that were added some time in the last 75 years. There appears to be no set structure for handling orders, nor does it look like the restaurant is capable of putting such a structure in place - servers are constantly running around, the line cooks stop to work the register if the manager is refilling a drink at the counter, and things just generally get done. What does seem to trip them up is ordering a side. The fryer is all the way in a room in the back, and requesting a side of onion rings or fries will increase your wait time by an order of magnitude. They can't really speed up that process, though, nor would I want them to try; just something to keep in mind if you're in a rush. Chris' is a piece of Montgomery history, good for a quick (really quick) lunch, and the dogs, while not extraordinary, go down pretty easily. It's worth checking out at least once.

Chris's hotdogs is probably the place you want to go if you want a taste of great southern style cooking and great service. I've been there multiple times and each time I leave, I leave full and satisfied. If you are a first timer to Chris's, I would prefer you order the Chilli Hot Dog because it is just amazing, like mouth watering amazing. If you can't make up your mind then order the hotdog and hamburger which is really great. Their chicken tenders are good also. All in all Chris's hotdogs is the heart of cooking in downtown Montgomery.

My first hard food as a baby! Still love their hamburgers! Have to offer a few extra for take out!

Great atmosphere. Customer service was fantastic! Tried a hot dog all the way. It was good. Not the best I've had, but good. Would definitely go back.

Not sure what all the hype was about ...sauce is just ketchup and hot sauce Okay! I was TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED....what is all the HYPE about. It is located on Dexter Avenue near Dr. Martin Luther King's church..so I am sure he stopped in here to eat as well as Hank Williams Sr. ..it is reported it was his favorite restaurant. It has been opened since 1917. It is a very narrow building with counter space to sit and eat. They bought the next building to expand for seating areas and older booths. I loved the atmosphere and the look of the place..and that was IT!!!! We ordered hot dogs with everything but kraut..which comes with onions, mustard and special Chris Chili Sauce ...( ketchup and Hot sauce...no meat..no beans...just ketchup and hot sauce)...we also ordered onion rings to share that was burnt..not black but deep hard dark brown..,nothing golden about them...and the grease tasted old..I had a soda (coca colas in a bottle) and Tony ordered a Budweiser... total cost $15 with taxes and tip....I would and will not eat here again!!! They sell that sauce by the gallon for $35..much cheaper to make yourself...don't take my word for it though, go yourself...but you won't find me there!!! Next time in Montgomery, I will try another location!!! Let me know what you think?

  • Judd C.

Great atmosphere and great burger! I had the burger/hot dog combo. Loved the special sauce.

  • Russ M.

Oh Yeah! This one is the REAL DEAL. I contemplated going to eat at Chris' for a long time, I just have a hard time NOT doing lunch at Hamburger King when I am in Montgomery. But, I am REALLY glad that I ate at Chris'! The whole experience is something unique which must be appreciated for what it is. And, it is a historic business in an historic location, with its own feel, smell, and vibe. I had the combo which includes 1 hotdog, 1 burger, fries & a drink. It was very good. They do their own twist on the dogs, burgers, etc. with their chili sauce. This one is a must try place!!

  • Jackie R.

I love a good divey diner and I found it here. It's not glamorous, but it has a lot of character...I sort of feel like nothing has changed since it opened. Service was fast and friendly. The hot dog itself was sub par and in fact, if I were to change one thing, I would tell them to use a thicker dog. The chili sauce on top was great though and the coconut cream pie was heavenly! If you're in this part of Montgomery and are looking for something local, check it out!

    (4)
  • Bryan S.

If you are looking for gourmet food this is not your place. If you want a place dripping with atmosphere on one if the most historic streets in the world, come in for a great hotdog and some fries.

    (4)
  • Will T.

"Hank Williams pissed here in 1930." So reads the graffiti in the men's room. And from the looks of the place, it hasn't been cleaned since. If you use the restroom after you eat, you might lose your lunch. If you use it before you eat , you might lose your appetite. My advice is to use the restroom before you visit. And visit you must. Chris' is a Montgomery institution, but don't expect a gourmet hot dog experience. This is a dingy hole in the wall, painted elementary school green, which serves up basic hot dogs and hamburgers in quick fire fashion. What makes it unique is Chris' "secret sauce." Don't try to figure it out, just chow down on the slightly sloppy mess and avail yourself of the roll of paper towels that substitutes for napkins. Thick, meaty crinkle cut fries come straight from the fryer and will have you sucking in air trying to cool your mouth. I looked for an "I survived Chris' Famous Hot Dog" t-shirt to no avail.

It's just simply a delicious way to fill up. It may be smallest cook top in town but they make a good dog and burger.

Almost 100 years old?? Still in the same family??? Say what? I am a sucker for whole in the wall establishments...so I went...and had Chris' Famous Hot Dogs. And they were good...

  • Mark S.

A very unique hot dog, and one of the few bright spots in the downtown Montgomery local food scene. This place has great history to go along with its fantastic prices and good food. My wife and I shared the two dogs and fries meal, and although the dog itself could be much better (It was basically a skinny Hebrew National dog), the whole thing put together "all the way" was great! The onions, mustard, kraut, and chili sauce was fantastic. The sauce itself was very intriguing, as it tasted like nothing else that I've ever had. It was more like a chili powder sauce instead of traditional chili, but it was still very good. And like any good diner style place, they had slices of pies available to end our meal. We went with the coconut cream pie, and loved it.

Two things will be evoked as you enter Chris' Hotdogs: 1) Your gag reflex 2) Your curiosity The ambiance is best described as a place where antiquity meets an over used Porto-potty on a hot summer day at Lollapalooza. The air is filled with smoke and grease from the cook area, which more than likely hasn't been cleaned since this place opened. You will get the privilege of leaving with this smell on your clothes so I have affectionately named it "Chris' cologne." Yet, the curiosity draws you, "I have to at least try it." The food is so greasy it could probably be used to lubricate hydraulic machinery. The food on a scale of 1 to 10 of edibility, probably scores a strong 1 and a half. So why go when there is a slight chance you might get bowel dysentery? The special sauce and the experience! Somehow it brings you back time and time again. Chris's might be best described as a train wreck, "It's something you don't want to see and the smell of carnage might be unbearable, but somehow you can't resist taking it all in."

For almost 100 years this place has been serving backyard cookout food to politicians and locals. It's been 15 years since I last ate at Chris'. If I'm lucky, it will be at least 15 more before it happens again. I'm all for a dive restaurant. However, the charm of a place that hasn't been renovated or cleaned in 50 years is wasted on food that has little flavor. The chili sauce is the big draw here. At best, it is OK. Lots of black pepper, but otherwise "blah." During my experience at Chris', the strangest part was the fake politeness of the staff, which was delivered with hostility. If this place were open late at night, it would be an excellent beer absorbant. As a lunch time stop it is skip-able. If the cashier yelled at drunks instead of lunch customers, Chris' could use it as a marketing ploy. Since it doesn't seem to be a gimmick it is just bad business. They could have just had a bad day, but the food wasn't good enough for me to test that theory with a return visit. Pros: Cheap gut-busting hot dogs and hamburgers that will give your shame a powerful workout. Cons: The paper plates have more flavor than the food, angry servers, and a cashier who yells polite things in angry ways. Bizarro.

3.5 Stars Ok, true confession. When I was kid I loveee hotdogs. I would ask my parents for hotdogs almost everyday. Luckily hotdogs are one of the easiest things to make. Hotdogs and buns. Fairly simple. So when I heard Chris' hotdogs I was skeptical. Something gotta be fantastic about this place to be getting rave reviews. And lucky it is their special sauce. Yay! It is good. The decor is so classic too. I like it - lost in the 1900s. What the heck happen to the walls, hahaaa. The place probably hasn't changed since it was first open. The cooking area is visible on the left side with seating on the right.

  • Tra S.

Haha just go there for the atmosphere-- so much history, get a hotdog with all the goodness :)

    (4)
  • Jesse A.

Chris' is old and greasy, which are a couple of reasons that it is great. I've been going there for years. The secret sauce is what gives the place its legacy. If you like the hot dog, try a special dog (two dogs on one bun), or better yet try a special burger....two patties with the sauce- my personal favorite. When you go to a place like this, do not expect a clean crisp pretty hot dog that you can eat without getting anything on your shirt. When you go to Chris' you get a mess of sloppy saucy decadent goodness that only a local hole in the wall place can produce. 90 plus years for a reason. Tip- at times I will get hot dogs to go because they will wrap them in parchment paper, causing all the ingredients to marry and steam together living happily ever after.

  • Skep T.

After eating at Chris', long touted as a hangout of a drunken Hank Williams Sr., it hit me -- I suddenly realized what really killed poor Hank: a hotdog from Chris'. Quite surprised it didn't kill me too. I think these hotdogs are best described as this: it looks like someone ate a tasty chili dog, then vomited up said dog onto a a fetid wiener in a crumbly dollar store bun. (For gods sake, look at the photos of this miserable mess!) I was actually quite surprised at how horrible this place was given all the hype. I am not lying when I say I saw a cockroach on my way out skimmy up the wall. Perhaps he too had too much of that "special sauce" and had to get to the men's room.

Small establishment that says its been in Montgomery for almost a 100 years. Usually that means one of two things. Its really good or the locals think its the best thing in the world and support it no matter what. Im beginning to find in Montgomery that the latter is the case. Chris' isnt terrible, it's just not great either. Its a hot dog/ hamburger joint and thats what you get. Simple menu but thats not necessarily a bad thing. Walked in and was a little confused by the seating as we weren't immidiatly greeted. Told to sit anywhere so grabbed us a booth. Looked over the menu, simple like I said, and we both decided to go with the hotdog hamburger combo. My girl was going to get onion rings until she saw the fries were crinkly fries(the best kind) so we went against getting the onion rings. About 5 minutes later we got our food. We got everything all the way so it had mustard, onions, kraut, cheese, and "chili sauce" on the dog and mustard, ketchup, onions, cheese, and "chili sauce" on the burger. No lettuce or tomato and nothing else fancy to add but thats ok because I didnt expect it from here. The burger and dog were ok but nothing special, kind of bland actually. Fries were good and not salted so you can adjust it to your liking. Probably the really dissapointing thing is the chili sauce that people had raved about around town. I expected home made hot dog chili like iv gotten other places around the country (you know the type, no beans just meat and spices cooked down). Instead it was this kind of orange looking sauce that I really couldn't taste. maybe it was masked by the other toppings and maybe it was just flavorless. I dont get the rave that everyone has put into this sauce. Overall, service was fast with drinks never being empty. Food was hot, out fast, and edible. Prices reasonable for quantity of food. Maybe next time Ill just go get a plain dog with the chili sauce to just try the sauce seperate but Im not sure that that will make a real difference in the sauce flavor.

    (2)
  • Melissa T.

Hell yes! This is the standard by which all other hotdog joints are judged for me. The building is old, it's not shiny and clean and new. Prices are cheap, hotdogs are DELICIOUS. If you do not get the sauce on your dogs, you are a blasphemer and should just skip this place. I always want to eat here every time I come back home to visit. This place is a gem in the Gump.

Good service.Ok food.I love the hot dog sauce. It is over a hundred years old.good for kids. Cheese burger is pretty good. They are fried. The hot dogs are good too.

I was saddened the first time I tried to get to Chris', because we missed dinner by thirty minutes. The owner (Chris' grandson) was apologetic and gave us a card for a free hot dog and coke the next time we attempted to come by. Chris' officially became a mission for me with this kind gesture. The place is just as exciting as I anticipated, with it's vintage, puke-green walls and old school feel. The owner recognized me by my afro and came around and greeted us. I was happy to tell him that these are some of the best hotdogs I've ever feasted on. I had the Special Cheese Dog. What really makes it special is Chris' sauce. The heartburn will make you pay later, but I think it's completely worth it. You will not soon forget Chris! This would be a 5 star place for me, but the bathrooms . . . I can't say they haven't been cleaned since 1917, but they are pretty horrid. Other than the bathrooms, the place is really worth a stop, the people are super friendly and the hotdogs are amazing.

    (4)
  • Jessica M.

A Montgomery institution, paper plates and chili topped hot dogs... you don't need to eat a lot to feel super full! Not to be missed!

  • Alex S.

I once got a pamphlet that listed "99 places to eat in Alabama before you die" Kind of morose, but Chris' made the list. It was absolutely delicious. I'd add it to a list of 'best of' hot dogs from different parts of the country. Try going on a weekend when there's absolutely nothing going on in this neighborhood and you can find parking. I'm also surprised that more people haven't reviewed this place since it's been around forever, but then again Montgomery, Alabama was never renowned for its embrace of technology. Next time your passing through, stop at Chris', stuff your face, and spend the rest of a drive in a food coma.

    (5)
  • N S.

Alright, here's the deal with Chris'. It's a great "dive joint' with history and fantastic customer service. The owner BS'ed with my buddy and I while we ate our hot dogs and burgers (both were great with the special sauce making it "special"). If you get the hot dog go for the double because the single is too small in my opinion. During my three month stay in Montgomery I would say Chris' was one of my favorite eat spots.

    (4)
  • Andrew C.

This is the kind of dive that one could expect on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. It is never seemingly clean enough, but I don't care! They have the best Chili dogs and burgers around! And there french fries and onion rings are wonderful. The prices are reasonable and the lady making the food is a stoic, but occassionally you can get her to smile. If you get food and tell them to hold the chili sauce? Your an idiot who needs to get a grip!

    (5)
  • Melissa T.

If you want to travel back in time, stop by Chris's. It will really make you feel like you stepped into a time machine. But as for the hot dogs... we wanted to love Chris's. We did, but its just any old hot dog joint.

    (2)
  • Randall F.

OK, so... Let's be real for a minute. Chris' Hotdogs is not fine dining. Hell, it's barely dining, period. The place, in spite of (or maybe because of) its tradition, is dingy and maybe a little unclean. The flat top fryer, which is used to cook just about everything, would give Gordon Ramsay an aneurysm, and there really isn't anything terribly special about their food. But that's the charm of Chris'. Its one of those places where the sum of the parts make a truly magical place and it just wouldn't be the same any other way. The location is perfect for this type of restaurant. You come in, seat yourself, and wait to have your order taken (or you could squeeze yourself into the bar area, but that's a tight fit). The staff at Chris' is a colorful bunch yet everyone is very friendly and willing to be of service. One of my favorite things about Chris' is that they serve Coca-Cola in a glass bottle. It's always frosty cold and on a warm day it is a really nice treat. After your meal you can enjoy all the interesting and historically significant photographs along the wall. Some very recognizable people have enjoyed a hotdog here. All in all, Chris' is a place that Montgomery is better for having. They are an icon of this city, and deservedly so. If you keep an open mind about the atmosphere and the food and just enjoy yourself, I feel confident that you will find yourself wanting to come back to Chris'.

    (4)
  • Walker S.

I've seen some one and two star posts on here and I just have to feel bad that these people didn't get the proper experience. If you're looking for crazy combinations and off the wall ingredients this is not the place. It's classic style dogs and cheesburgers all topped with Chris's special chili sauce. The place is a dive, the people are friendly but you have to go with the flow. Don't get bitter b/c no one is talking to you. You have to take initiative in this place and if you do I promise you'll have a great experience. Get the special cheeseburger and fries!

Interesting Hot Dog joint. Not exactly "clean" feeling but it's very old and has a nostalgic feel.
