This is more like a hot food bar restaurant. The service is great! The food is great! There is a big screen tv in the waiting area in case anyone wants to dine in during a game. The catfish is made to order. The sides and meats are located at the hot bar. I ordered the catfish dinner with sweet potatoes and mac n cheese. My friend ordered the same thing, but added collard greens. It comes with cornbread. All of our food was delicious. I did not like the cornbread because it was not sweet. However, the sweet tea is good. This is the first place I've been to that serves kool aid... They also sell candy apples, cakes & pies. It does not look like the average carry out local store. It is a nice small soulfood restaurant with excellent service.

This was a great find. If your looking for decor and niceties don't bother. But if you want great southern cooking at a great price then you've found your place. Highly recommend.

Excellent food at a reasonable price. Meat, two sides, and cornbread. Generous portions. Clean comfortable surroundings. Smiling, happy employees (and owner) greeted us warmly and gave us great service. This is a must visit for fans of soul/comfort food.

This place is like having dinner at grandma's house: you won't even know what hit you by the time you push away from the table. I have definitely gotten my fat boy on here a few times, and felt like I would need to be rolled out in a wheel chair. The lasagna is my favorite, but everything I've had was great. They make yams exactly like my mother did. I could eat a whole plate of them! The staff is very courteous and professional. I can't give it five stars because it's always hot in here. I don't know if this is due to AC problems, or because the stereotype about black folks being averse to cooler temperatures may actually be true. Either way, I don't like to sweat my ass off while eating.

My husband and I stopped here on the way out of Mobile and it was delicious! He had the fried chicken and said it was the best he's ever had. I had the smothered pork chop and it was heavenly. The sides were all great, too! We were greeted as soon as we walked in and were shown how it all works. We went and ordered our food. I was carrying our son, so the cook brought my plate to the table for me. Our drinks were brought and and we we're checked on several times. The total for our bill was under $19 for two meals and one iced tea. We were even offered to go cups for our drinks since they knew we were traveling. The restaurant itself is nothing fancy. I do wish they had a changing table in the bathroom, but that doesn't take away from the outstanding food we enjoyed. We would highly recommend this place!

Had them catered for a meeting. The food was OUTSTANDING!! Mary delivered it herself. Had steak tips, Mac n cheese, mashed potatoes with gravy, and candied yams. Best meal I have had in Mobile since moving here 4 months ago!!

We found this tiny little bit of Southern cooking heaven quite by chance. My husband was born and raised in Birmingham and after tasting Mary's baked chicken he said this was the real deal! In addition to the Southern cooking there's also wonderful Soul food. They had just run out of chitterlings, but still had oxtail, liver and onions, and turnip greens. I had the liver and onions - oh so good! Lightly dredged in flour and beautifully seasoned. Clean and pleasant with light jazz playing in the background and a great staff. We'll be back!

The best. I'm originally for the Los Angeles, and I was hoping to find real southern food and I found it here. Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, collard greens, beans, mac and cheese, etc; and all were generous portions. I was surprised I was able to finish it all. It's a very small, hot bar restaurant. I was a little confused when I walked in on how service was done, but the waitress was super friendly and explained to us how it works. You get one meat and two sides, but also have the option of the specials they can cook for you in the back. I'm in the south, so I want the real deal, I got the fried chicken and it was amazing. It was not greasy in anyway. I was using both hands to pick off all the meat. It was that good. The sweet tea was also on point. I would recommend this place for anyone traveling on the 10, looking for that hardcore soul food, willing to take a short detour into Mobile, to do it. It is a bit divey, and I was traveling with a friend who is Asian and looks like a butch lesbain, so we got a couple of stares when we first walked in. However, that soon passed as soon as the waitress came and helped us out. The staff was friendly and always checking on us with that southern charm and kindness.

Stopped in for lunch with my Mother on Wed. Between us we had the meatloaf, chicken livers, mac & cheese, yams, greens and cornbread. Everything was excellent. Bottom line, excellent food and excellent service at an excellent price. If you're looking for fresh country cooking, give this place a try. You will not be disappointed.

Excellent southern cooking. We were passing thru and saw the good reviews on Yelp. They were true and the staff was friendly. Loosen a belt buckle.

We met the sweetest owner of this local spot on our road trip. Mary is absolutely a charm to talk to! The delicious food was something else! Had the crispy fried chicken, lasagna, dressing, yams and Mac and cheese. Sooo good!!

Excellent soul food. It was really good, it taste like a family meal prepared at home on a Sunday. Kind of awkward if you have never been there before the line moves fast and you have to figure out their system before its your turn. The line is so long fumbling at the food serving area will cause a massive rush of social anxiety. Just know that it's a meat and three sides kind of deal and you will fare well. The Mac and cheese is great. The meat loaf is really good, the gravy is exceptional especially with the perfect mashed potatoes. The Koolaid is really good too, the kind of stuff your mom thought was as bad as crack if you're an 80's baby. Basically if you go here you will be happy.

Nice simple little restaurant, just my type of place. For your meal, you make your selections from hotbar, one meat & 3 other sides. They have a great selection. I enjoyed my meal very much. Service was GREAT. Price for meal was average which was $12.08. I will recommend & shall return.

Delicious home cooking. The fried chicken, mac and cheese, and candied yams were just like my grandmother used to fix. Lots of people streamed through for carry out plates. If you're in the area, give them a try.

It wasn't bad. My great aunt suggested we stop by here for my one southern meal before I returned to Yankee life. Mary's is a very small, cute and unadorned place that makes the traditional southern fare. You fill up your plate or to-go container at a small buffet station and either carry out or choose to sit. I would have preferred to carry out but we were taking off for Georgia and I was good without the smell or grease sticking around in the car. The food was very good! Despite my mother being from Alabama, and despite being a great cook myself, I have no southern cooking skills what-so-ever. No ma'am...so I am not picky when it comes to my fried chicken, corn bread, etc. Mary's was like Sunday after church food (yes, my Jewish tushi has experienced Sunday post church southern eating). The chicken was not super crispy like I prefer, but it was darn good, great flavor, and the corn bread was moist. The mac and cheese was creamy and artery clogging as it should be and the beans were perfectly cooked in a delish seasoning blend. My bf, who had never been in Alabama before, tore through his meal in a few short minutes and he had twice what I did. My only complaint here would be service. The cashier was friendly, however there was some employee with a major attitude problem huffing and puffing all over the place. She was impossible to ignore since she was vacuuming (what? mid afternoon???) very loudly around my table. It was incredibly disruptive and caused us to not enjoy the experience as much. Next time I'm in Mobile, I may come back. For now, I do recommend a visit but strongly suggest carry out.

This place brings back memories with each bite. Love the food and the kool-aid. Both my wife and I will be back. And it was not expensive at all

I really wanted to eat where the locals eat. My daughter and I stopped in and by the end of our meal we had the opportunity to meet Mary the owner. She is just awesome. I had ordered the pork chop, turnip greens, blackeyed peas and the dressing with gravy. I actually did NOT order all this good food it just comes with the entree. My daughter had the fried chicken, fried okra, blackeyed peas and rice. My pork chop was the only thing I was having trouble with. It was dried out but I did not want to say anything. The greens and peas were awesome and so was the dressing. My daughter loved her chicken sides. So Mary shows up at our table with a fresh pork chop. She knew! I may not be back to Mobile in a long time but if I am I would come back. Mary loves her guests and shows it and her food is solid.

The reviews of this small place got our group extremely excited. The websites says they deliver on five or more orders, this was not possible (they said they had no drivers available today) so I hopped in the car to pick up our large order. The food looked and smelt great. The service on the food line was welcoming and enjoyable. They answered questions provided a genuine hospitality - this all changed at the cash register. Even if this turns out to be the bat food I've ever had - I will not return. Again, I will not return and advise future customers to consider the way they are treated when paying. They were extremely rude. Rolling eyes, sighing. I have never felt so uncomfortable paying for food or service. The odd part is these two ladies were older than any one else in the front working - you'd expect attitude from a younger person over someone who appears they have probably worked more than just a few years. Looking forward to my first (and last) meal from this establishment.
