This is my 4th trip to Cooter Brown's! Let me tell you they didn't disappoint! The food is great! They have an extensive beer selection also. The guy let me try a ton of different beers you can't get in Ohio. I appreciate that! I always get the ribs with hot BBQ sauce and they were tender, juicy, & delicious! See us next year!

Truly some of the best ribs I've ever had. The sides were decent but the ribs and service were phenomenal. I will most definitely be back and finish a whole rack. REALLY good ribs.

Best Memphis style dry ribs period. No need to visit Memphis, come on down to Alabama. It's every bit worth the trip.

My ribs were completely inedible they were so salty. I took one bite and had to give the rest of the rack away to someone who could stand it. If it wasn't a takeout order I would've asked for my money back. I tasted a portion of the meat without the rub and it was delicious. The greens where good and reasonably seasoned. I'm told the ribs aren't usually that bad, so hopefully others will have a better experience.

I think it's safe to say that there aren't too many other places like Cooter Brown's. A small rib shack with a loft that you have to walk up what you might call a spiral staircase, but only if you're being really generous. This place gladly accepts the dive label by adding signs and license plates hung up everywhere. Oh yeah, and every square inch that can be reached (and some that can't be but are still adorned) is covered with signatures and slogans both in various colors of marker and carved into the wood. But you didn't come here because it's a dump - you came here for the ribs. You heard they were awesome. Damn straight, they are. While the "plain" dry rub might be a little salty for some, add either the regular or hot sauce and these are some bomb-ass ribs. Smoky, tender and luscious with pockets of yummy pork fat. While they're not going to haunt my dreams, other than maybe some indegstion, these are awesome ribs. The sides were pretty good, too - I got fried okra and BBQ beans. And the service? Keshia was awesome! Super attentive despite having to keep climbing up those "stairs," and always with a smile. I don't know if I'll make it back to Bama anytime soon, but if I come back I will put Cooters on my list for a repeat visit.

Awesome Alabama ambience and the tastiest ribs I've ever had! Plus, Your Fathers Rootbeer is amazingly good! If you're at the CDP you have to stop by.

In Jacksonville this place is epic. Meanwhile, compared to other quality BBQ places in the South, it's at par. However, if you find yourself in this city, it's definitely the go spot to eat at. It has character, great service, a bar feel and can be a great place to kill time before and after Gamecock games. Don't be afraid to carve or write your name on the table or wall. The dry rub rivals some of the best I've had. The drawback was the ribs weren't cooked adequately. We ordered a full rack of ribs and unfortunately some of the meat was undercooked and other portions were overcooked and I'm referring to meat on the same rib. However, the spicy bbq sauce that we asked to be on the side was one of the highlights of the meal. We stayed away from the burgers, simply because they aren't fresh and hand padded, rather frozen and thawed daily. Instead we tried the pulled pork, which was good, much better than Sonny's or Dickey's, but not as good as even a Jim N Nicks and Dreamland, two go-to Alabama chains. As for the sides, they aren't as good as the ribs. The brunswick stew tasted identical to Chef-Boyardee. The Cooter cob (deep fried corn on the cob) tasted like regular corn off the grill and the orka tasted like normal okra.

Cooters is a tiny hole in the wall BBQ joint with delicious food and a great beer selection. Order the ribs dry with sauce on the side, you won't regret it. The wings were super meaty and tasty too. The pulled pork was decent but a bit too dry for my liking. The staff and bar manager specifically were so accommodating and friendly. During my second visit I was served flat end-of-the-keg Yuengling (they warned us it was the bottom and gave an extra free glass). But it was just way too watery and I requested something else. Well the bar manager helped me figure out which other beer to get (since I mostly stick to wine) and let me sample 6-7 beers in little cups before I made my selection! How awesome is that? If you're staying at the CDP, this is a MUST local stop.

How do you top perfection? You don't. You leave perfection to those who have it mastered. Dry rubbed, tender, pork ribs, a slightly sweet bbq sauce with a kick, homemade potato salad and iced tea, all enjoyed while sitting in a loft at a wooden table and bench that has autographs carved and penned by previous patrons = perfection (both food and atmosphere). My server must have walked up and down the spiral stairs to the lift dining area 25+ times to ensure all diners were cared for, and we were! I leave this amazing location listed by the Alabama Board of Tourism as one of the "100 dishes (ribs) to eat before you die" with a bottle of sauce, a bag of dry rub and a t-shirt that fondly declares that Cooter Browns Rib Shack has "Good Ribs and Tasty Butts".

The restaurant is small with limited seating but there's no better rib joint in the Terran system. Get them dry with the sauce on the side. The meat is fall off the bone tender with a perfect bark!! Well worth a detour if traveling anywhere near this place.

Amazing food and drinks! The BBQ ribs are off the hook. Smoky ribs like you see on all those BBQ paradise-type shows....love the name!

LEGIT. THE REAL DEAL. Deep South BBQ at its absolute finest. I had been living in Alabama almost a year when I went to Cooter's Rib Shack on a date. Being a "damn yankee" I was a little nervous when we pulled up :-) When I went in I thought to myself, "I feel like I have been living in Alabama this entire time and have only now arrived!". It is a bbq hole in the wall with all the wonderful expectations that comes with such a title. The bbq is ON POINT. I am more a beef ribs fan which are hard to find in bama but Cooter's makes me say "what beef ribs??". The ribs here have amazing flavor and are so blissfully tender. All the sides are perfection. Corn bread, mac, sweet tea, its all amazing. GRAFFITI is welcome! Having moved from the NY area I couldn't believe seeing graffiti from fellow New Yorker on the wall! Apparently I'm not the only yankee that's a fan! Whenever I come back and visit this is a must for me now. Definitely bought the tshirt last time. It has such an awesome down home, casual vibe, its pretty dark, cool spiral staircase and dark wood. If you find yourself in Jacksonville on a date, or in Jacksonville at all, don't forget to stop in!

Came here with outstanding service and great BBQ. The dry rub on the BBQ was amazing. The okra and corn nuggets were good...great selection in beer. Building is a little small and prices are good.

I was in Alabama for work, Cooter Browns was highly recommended. Maybe my expectations were high since it came so highly recommended. We were seated pretty quickly and our server was nice. Of course I had to have the ribs, deep fried corn on the cob (because where in california could I try this) and deep fried pickles! The ribs were very good, the fried corn was greasy and just okay, the fried pickles were great!!! That being said if I was back in town I would go back again.

Service is iffy, but the food is so good. I've had almost every bbq option on the menu and while the ribs are far and away the greatest thing within 50 miles, the chicken and pork are delicious too!

  • Derek B.

I don't normally love ribs but I love these. Hands down best ribs I've ever had. And I crave them. 100 times better than Dreamland in Tuscaloosa. I order the dry rub without any sauce.

For what it is, it's one of the best. I've traveled near and far throughout the South questing for delicious rib perfection, and Cooter Brown's comes danger close! Eclectic decorations, rustic seating, and delicious ribs. To quote a friend: "Don't hold a rib above your head when you're eating, because your tongue will give you a black eye trying to get to it.". Sides were ok...corn on cob and greens for me. Try the Naked Pig beer as well.

This place is a drive for me to get to but it is totally worth. Best ribs I have ever had. And the rest of the food is good too. Not a lot of seating but really good beer selection too.

My fiancé and I are new to the area and was told that this was by far the best bbq place around Jacksonville. We wanted to see what the hype was about so we went. I have to say that this place had some of the best bbq I had ever tasted. We both were very pleased and plan to continue eating here. I would definitely recommend Cooter Browns.

When 'Ribs' is on the name of the place, they better be good...and these are great. Smokey, juicy with a great rub, a half slab will fill you up. Plus all the sides were good, too. A small place that is usually busy, the staff there really hustled but didn't make me feel rushed.

The best ribs I've even eaten! The dry rub was amazing. I want to fly back to Alabama just for the ribs!

Excellent ribs. But overpriced. Don't bother with the cold salads. I was disappointed when I asked for a sample of the pulled pork to help me decide of I wanted to order a sandwich to go with my ribs. The cook gave me a single string of pork, not even enough to know how it tastes. So I didn't order it.

Yep, it's a shack! But not nearly as bad as some would describe. It's small and cramped, but has character. Servers are GREAT! They also have a nice craft beer selection! YAY! The beers should be served in unchilled pint glasses though and not small frosted mugs. Heard the wings were really good, but I HAD TO HAVE THE RIBS. Dry rubbed with hot (habanero!!) sauce on the side. Wow. The half rack was PLENTY for me and I'm a big, fat, pig myself. Also tried the creamed corn poppers which were unique and awesome. Don't miss out on this place, but do get there early to get a seat.

Go with the ribs; and be warned, a half will feed the hungriest human! They are served in quarter, half and full rack sizes. I went with the BBQ sauce on the side, the ribs are so good alone, but a dip here and then was also very tasty. Get their early, it's quite small and cozy. Watch out for the Cooter's mash... that's all I'm saying ;) Great friendly service.

Great spare ribs, great burgers, wide range of funny named beers. Cooter's serves finger lickin' good spare ribs. Have been there twice and really liked the food. The place is somehow funny from the outside a wooden shack, inside still the wooden, worn shack, decorated with plenty of vehicle license plates from all over the world and other odd stuff fixed to the walls. First impression is like 'oh my goodness where am I?'. But staff is very friendly, and food is excellent. Especially the ribs are delicious. Bet if you like ribs, it's a safe try and you'll like it!

Great ribs.....small place, but check out the loft. The fries are really good too. A little too cramped to take kids in there. College crowds at night. I really wish they would add on a larger dining space in this place because it is really good and it gets crowded with just a few people in there and if you don't go early, then you will have quite a wait. But cannot complain about the food at all.

Ribs are EXCELLENT! They taste great dry, very moist and tender. The stalwart very polite and attentive. Very pleased, will surely visit again. I have a large appetite and i couldn't finish the half rack of ribs!

AWESOME RESTAURANT!!!! The ribs and dry rub are amazing. It's small, but it's perfect for the meal. Worth the wait of there is a line or get their early and don't wait. This is the best place I have ever eaten for ribs by far.

I was in the area and punched Barbecue in my GPS, well Cooter Browns came up so we went. Bought two racks of ribs. They were some of the best ribs we had ever had. I don't know if they happened to have a good day or if this is always how good the ribs are. I don't live in Alabama. Unfortunately, we didn't get any sides.

This hole in the wall is close to the Jacksonville State College Campus. Don't get me wrong when I say "hole in the wall" as with most it is a place you MUST visit. A hole in the wall to me can make some of the best places to eat. I rank this up there as one of the BEST PLACES in the Southeast to get dry ribs (sauce on the side). Oh and when ordering add the grilled corn on the cob. YUM! The beer selection is ok but that's not why you go to Cooter Brown's - it's ALL about the ribs not the beer.

Went back again to see if the ribs were really as good as I remembered. Well, they were. I don't usually even like ribs but these are the best. The cook came out and talked to us about how he made the ribs and gave us some pointers. The bartender was great as well. Definitely worth a visit when you're in the area.

Anything you get here is great, as football season approaches it would be nice to see the owners invest in a better bar TV, I always sit there and the 1998-2001 circa RCA rear projection is way past it's time, spend $200 bucks at Walmart for us ball fans please.

Loved it. Great spicy BBQ sauce that is actually SPICY! Tender ribs, the onion rings and peanut butter pie was freakin awesome! This is the best bbq I've had since I moved to the South over 4 years ago! Only thing I don't like about this place is they don't have mac n cheese as a side. I look forward to returning soon.

Great food and staff. Ribs and chicken are top notch. It's just a small place with a fun atmosphere that does it right. They also have a great selection of micro beers. Worth stopping for.

Definetlty a SHACK it is tiny but the ribs were amazing! I didnt like that I had to buy my sides as extra but o well the ribs rocked. On Tuesday the draw a random seat and give you a free meal.

Great BBQ ribs in a unique setting. The ribs are juicy and tender; they go well with their many sides and jars of draft beer. If you are in Jacksonville I highly recommend this place.

    great big ass ribs......cold beers....and it's a shack.....

The best ribs in the USA have to be the dry rub at Cooter Browns in Alabama. Spicy and cooked to perfection! Of course, being from California, I find the name offensive because I think it is some sort of racists slang .. but then, I'm not sure. I'll just overlook it for the food.
