I ordered the BBQ plate with two sides: onion rings and green beans. The onion rings were decent, the beans like from a cafeteria. The pork was OK, but not very smoky and had some sort of non-descript sauce on top. The meal wasn't awful, and the folks who run the place are very nice, but it wasn't any better than what you can get at any chain BBQ joint.

This place has great barbecue and great steaks! I have eaten here often and have never had a bad experience or meal. Everyone is friendly and quick. This is a family owned and operated restaurant. The ambiance is rural south with eclectic furnishings. Eat high off the hog without having to put on airs.

I love when we find a place where there are enough "regulars" that the owner greets everyone by name! We were driving around the area, looking for a place to eat, and found this on Yelp. There are different specials every day, and it was after we ordered that we realized that we should have gotten the "special" ribs dinner (only because of the reduced price). I had the 1/2 bbq chicken with beans and onion rings, and my husband had the bbq pork plate with cole slaw and onion rings. You order at the counter and then they bring the trays with your food out to you. The owner was delightful to talk with and is quite used to people "just driving through" the area. It's a little kitschy with over 200 pigs on display - little toys, statues, cookie jars, etc. He said he had a lot more but couldn't display them all.

I always say the best barbecue is always in a hole-in-the-wall place. This h-i-t-w had to add on, a few times. Good sign. Ribs were recommended to us and try were fantastic. Potato salad and baked beans as sides & banana pudding made the perfect barbecue meal. Ribs were so tender and had great flavor without sauce. We got the sauce on the side to enjoy them both ways. They have a lunch buffet filled with meat and vegetables. Great if you need a quick lunch but want meat & veggies. They also have a steak house part, open for dinner, where you pick your cut and cook it on the fire pit how you want it. Sounds like quite the experience.

Whoa! What a huge selection for a small joint! It's only about mile off of Interstate 65 which makes it a great option for those passing through. I sure am glad that I stopped here instead of a national chain. The left entrance is BBQ Joint and the right side is for the Steak House. I ordered and ate at the BBQ side. I was in the mood for some smoked meat. I ordered up the Rib Plate with Baked Beans, Potato Salad, Thick Toast, Sweet Tea and Banana Pudding ($19). Their smoked spare ribs were smokey and good with their sauce. The bark on the meat was dark but not burnt. The meat was dry which made it a bit tough, but with the sauce, I was lip smacking without complaint. The baked beans tasted much like what you would find out of the can with a hint of molasses. They were boring. The potato salad was mustard, mayo, and relish enhanced mashed potatoes. I didn't care for them as I wanted the freshness of a salad versus a savory sweet mash. The Banana Pudding was right on the money...where the banana provides the flavor and the custard is just a nice sweetness without being banana enhanced. The sweet tea was ok, a little weak on the tea, but fine on the sweet. Their large selection begins with Sandwiches and Plates that feature: Smoked BBQ (pulled pork, spare ribs, brisket, sausage, bologna, chicken, turkey) Grilled Chicken, Burgers (Angus and Choice) Fried Chicken Fingers Country Fried Steak, Grilled Ribeye Steak (or as printed on their menu: Ribeys Steak). They even serve up Seafood on Friday. The typical sides: Potato Salad Baked Beans Slaw Fried Okra Fried Onion Rings French Fries Fried Green Tomatoes Fried Pickles The misspellings on the Menu are enduring, but one of them made me laugh out loud. "Salades" which must be an Alabama way of saying they have more than one salad. Nice. Co-owner, Ms. Shirley was manning the BBQ counter and her life and business partner, Harry was holding down the Steak House. I enjoyed the impromptu tour of the Steak House...Harry picks out the steaks and brings them to the restaurant. You can grill your own or he will be happy to cook it for you. This place isn't cheap, but it's good eatin' and beats the national chain guys down the street.

Had real as it was gonna get southern bbq at Porky's. Definitely a dive, but didn't want to go to a chain - so that was just fine. Owner was very attentive, friendly and even showed us the steak house portion of the place even though we were there before it opened for the day. Had the pork bbq and it was very good. Not over sauced, tender and a hint of good smoke. Green beans: yum. Mashed potato salad: needed salt, baked beans: good. Fried Okra: well, we are northerners-so to me it didn't really taste like anything. Good with ketchup-but that is probably anarchist to say in the south. Recommend if you are in the Birmingham AL area. Porky's is in the Fultondale area. Harry - see ya in 2017, buddy!

Visited on Wednesday at lunch time. Ordered the fish, fries and slaw meal. It was simply inedible. The fish was just a mushy mess inside a crust of bread and old cooking oil. Told the cook (cannot possibly be classed as a 'chef'), and he looked at me like I was insane. It was probably a frozen filet that was murdered by wayyyy too much time in the fryer. The slaw was more akin to 'slaw flavored soup', the hush puppies were completely awful, greasy balls of tasteless crap. My wife had smoked pork and she said it was average. I wish, wish, wish I had gone somewhere else. My stomach is struggling with the small amount of fries I consumed and the fried pickle spears which were well below par, but edible. My wife doesn't like to complain, otherwise I would have demanded my money back. I will never go back, but if u are already sitting down about to eat. Do not order the fish!

Good BBQ and a lot of it. Very cheap beers, Fat Tire $3 draft, Miller High Life $2.75 bottles. Did I mention good BBQ, and the portions with sides are huge. They also have a BBQ pit in the middle of the room where you can grill your own steak. The staff was super friendly and on top of things.

Great service, great food! This place is the best kept secret in the Fultondale area. Such a down home feel and fantastic food to go with it. The BBQ is always great but I enjoy their lunch buffet as well.

Great steaks and the personal service by the owner was even better. Just like a good home cooked meal. If you're in the Fultondale area cross over the highway from the "chains" and have some great food.

I visited with my husband we where both impressed. Onion rings not completely done but that would not stop me from giving them another shot. The meat was really good. We want to return after they have the new section open for a while. You can stand up at a grill in the center of room with others and cook your own steak. My nephew will enjoy that.

So, I've been to Porky's a lot. You could say I was rather obsessed with it when we first moved here (and I still absolutely love it). When we first found our house, I saw Porky's on the way and I told my husband, "NEVER take me there. It looks gross." And indeed, it is something of a hole in the wall. I'm just waiting for it to fall or burn down any day, but the building's appearance certainly doesn't affect the incredible cookin'! The restaurant is split into two sides. The main side is the BBQ side where you can find pulled pork plates and sandwiches, ribs, chicken fingers, chicken sandwiches, fish, baked beans, cole slaw, fries, potato salad... all the usual BBQ joint kind of things. You can also peek in the icebox for irresistible pies--chocolate, lemon, coconut--and cakes. This side is open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday and lunch on Sunday. The other side is a "plate" side, a meat-and-three cafeteria line. Oh my goodness. Everything is so good. There are usually two meats to chose from, like fried chicken, meatloaf, fried fish, pork chops, chicken & dumplings, chicken & dressing (a personal favorite), country fried steak, etc. Then there are half a dozen vegetables, of which you can get two. You can choose between a roll, cornbread, or cornbread with "cracklins." Then you can pick up a bowl of the dessert, and if you get there early enough you'll have the privilege of experiencing the banana pudding or one of the cobblers... otherwise you get bread budding (which is also quite tasty, but I've also been a sucker for a good fruit cobbler). This side is open for lunch Tuesday through Friday and again on Sunday. The staff at Porky's is all country and all friendly. I love seeing everyone when we go in. They greet you and are very helpful, willing to chit chat on days when they're not slammed. I'd recommend Porky's to anybody passing through, and whenever we have out-of-town visitors, this is the first place we take them.

My in-laws, wife and I have stopped at Porky's Pride twice now on our way down I-65 headed to Florida. I love the kitschy atmosphere, friendly staff, and personal attention from owners. That, and they just don't make BBQ like this up north. The ribs are fall off the bone tender and hickory smoked/dry rubbed. Vinegar based sauce comes on the side. Plenty of homestyle side dishes. Porky's obviously has its share of local regulars even though its a place right off the highway. Looking forward to coming back on a future trip. Highly recommended.

I was in the area and decided that I wanted a sandwich. I didn't want any sandwich though, I wanted a smoked sausage sandwich. I don't know why, I just did. When I was ordering, I was having a hard time deciding which side I wanted. I either wanted fries, onion rings or fried pickles. When I asked a question about the pickles, the lady at the counter didn't seem to like my question and I got the feeling that she just wanted me to order and get the heck out of dodge. So I just got fries. I also got some banana pudding. The sausage sandwich was actually quite nice. The flavors were nice and smokey and there wasn't an overwhelming amount of sauce. Unfortunately the fries tasted like yucky Burger King fries and the banana pudding was warm. I don't like warm bananas. I like cold banana pudding. I would probably go back and try something else. They seemed to have a nice size menu. So I am sure I will find something delicious.

Like many who first partake of Porky's, I was instructed to eat there by a member of the local clientele. It took us a few weeks, but my wife, mother-in-law and I finally stopped in for lunch after church one Sunday afternoon. Having been told the merits of the barbeque, that's what I had my taste set for, and I ordered a barbeque plate with french fries and baked beans. During lunchtime, Porky's also has a plate dinner set up as a sort of meat-and-veggies walkthrough. After checking out their selection, that's the option my wife and mother-in-law chose. They walked through the line and selected their meats and sides, emerging with plates heaped with hearty portions of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans and cobbler. A short while later my barbeque plate was delivered by the owner himself, a smiling, friendly, impish-looking fellow. We dug in to our respective lunches and quickly realized the mistake we had made at not paying the establishment a visit sooner. The barbeque was tender and flavorful, neither soggy and mushy nor dry and chewy. The fries were thin cut, but avoided the soft, floppy presentation that they often arrive in, and the beans were a little sweet and a little spicy, which I very much enjoyed. The ladies in my party equally enjoyed the fare they had selected; the fried chicken by itself could have been a meal, the pieces were so large, and the sides were each the tasty comfort food one could expect from such a restaurant. Since that first day we have returned several times--enough to be recognized as new regulars by the owner, Harry--and enjoyed the food during every visit.

Don't miss this place if you're driving through Birmingham on I 65. If headed south, take the Walter Chapel exit to your right and it is less than a mile on your left. For me, there is no "Best BBQ". I like many different types. Ask a 100 Southerners what makes the best BBQ and you will get a 100 different answers. This stuff is a combination of several. The regular BBQ was a dry meat with sauce added afterward. Not too sweet and not too sharp. Cole Slaw was chopped too fine for my taste but I could forgive that any day because of the wonderful flavor. If you like that sweet and sour, syrupy stuff they serve at some chains, don't order this one. It is fresh; full flavored cabbage and creamy homemade dressing. The onion rings were made in house from big thick juicy slices of onion. My son is the hamburger expert and he swore that the cook must have had an old charcoal grill going out back. The specials this day were T-Bone and Sirloin steaks with baked potato. There were huge slices of chocolate cream pie next to big chunks of pound cake but I had no room. We sat outside in a family friendly, fenced in area and watched the bikers and local families go in and out. The owner Harry and his wife will be glad to see you and genuinely care about your experience at their establishment. He was in another business and realized that as much as his wife liked to cook and he like to grill and barbecue, they needed to change directions. Their choice in opening Porky's is a hit. We had sweet tea (or course) and I think I saw a few beers in the mix. You order at the counter and one of his super friendly servers brings it out to you. Porky's Pride is not touristy or dive-y. It is just great food being enjoyed by the locals. Based on Harry's guest register there are quite a few out of state travelers that have been directed to Harry's by the locals. So it is obvious, they are willing to share. Porky's Pride BBQ is a gem hidden on the roads less traveled and you owe it to yourself to make the trip.
