This place has been a fixture in Dora since 1951. I like the name. I can imagine Leo and Susie sitting around trying to come up with the name. One of them would say "we'll paint the roof green and call it green top." The diner has become a landmark on Highway 78, and it is frequently used as a reference point for directions. I had lunch here on a Saturday afternoon. I had the smoked chicken sandwich and a side of baked beans. It was okay. The smoky flavor of the meat was mostly cancelled out by the sweet barbeque sauce. And, I thought there should have been a more generous portion of meat. The baked beans were pretty average, and tasted like they came straight from a store-bought can. The atmosphere is authentic, and exactly what I expected in a small, county town in Alabama. Several other Yelp reviews mention the smell of cigarette smoke, but, although I'm sensitive to it, I didn't notice. Instead, I enjoyed the fresh smell of burning hickory from the barbeque pit. In summary, I recommend trying Green Top if you are in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it.

I visited the Green Top with 5 locals, 2 of which had been going since the place opened. They all love the place. It brought out a lot of stories. I wasn't too impressed with the food, but it was good. Tried fried pickles for the first time but I did wonder if it was a frozen product. BBQ salad didn't do it for me. I wish I had gotten a sandwich. I think it must look very much the same as it did when my 84 year old mother went there as a young adult because she only joked about the bathrooms looking a lot better:). The sweet tea was seriously sweet, if I go again I will order half and half.

After asking a client if Leo's was a great place to eat he highly recommend it. So I went and trust me I don't judge places on their appearance especially bbq restaurants. As I was walking inside an elderly couple had just walked in just ahead of me and sat down in the corner of the restaurant. I saw the bar and since I was by myself I didn't want to take up a entire table. So I sat at the bar and a lady said "you know what you want?" I politely replied "no mam can I get a menu please?" She asked another waitress to hand me a menu. And she did so. So. After looking over the menu o figured out what i wanted; I never received any more service at all. I did however receive several glares and stares. After about 15minutes of waiting and not receiving any service I decided this place was not for me. No one even asked me if I wanted anything to drink. Boy was I surprised. I travel all over for work and this is the first time I've ever received this type of service. I was totally disappointed and Will not repeat or suggest for anyone to go there. I'll Katy drive to dreamland, saws, Jims & Nicks. Somewhere else besides there.

Am I about to make a few folks mad? My uncle has been going to Green Top for years and wanted my husband and I to go with him. I'd driven by it many times and knew the state of the building. So I knew the atmosphere, I get it, the divey environment didn't affect my opinion at all. For those that don't, it looks like a dumpy old bar that only the locals dare to patronize. Don't be scared by it's appearance. They do allow smoking which I'm generally not a fan of but no one was smoking in the lower section so it wasn't noticeable. The BBQ with sauce is on Alabama's Top 100 things to Eat. Since my husband was getting a loaded potato with the pork I wanted to try the chicken. I ordered it with cole slaw and baked beans. Hubs got the loaded bbq potato, uncle the burnt ends, and aunt the bbq salad. I liked how the chicken was diced into big chunks. It was not too dry and would have had a lovely flavor if it weren't for the sauce. It was drenched in sauce. The sauce was very tangy and super thick, tasted a lot like ketchup and overpowered the flavor of the chicken. Next time I'll ask for it on the side but my aunt said the sauce was not the same, like they forgot to add something to it. The beans were the similar in flavor, very thick and super tangy and sweet. The cole slaw was very good. Hubby's bbq potato alright too. Even my uncle and aunt were a little disappointed on this trip. They said that things just didn't taste the same. The sauce, the beloved ranch, the baked beans. Maybe someone in the kitchen didn't know what they were doing that day. I'm not writing Green Top off I think it was just a bad day.

Recommended by a friend and he was right on the mark. Fries like I make home. Chicken sandwich stuffed full of chunks of white meat. A new beer that is one of my favs now. Friendly staff who were constantly asking if we needed anything and were accommodating to our requests. Stop by and have a bite.

The barbecue pork is excellent, but that's about all that's good here. Don't order the chicken or expect much out of the sides. Not the friendliest service or best atmosphere either - just the best place to stop for takeout of a chopped shoulder sandwich on the stretch of between Jasper and Birmingham. They have a Jasper location too, but I haven't tried it. This location says Dora, but it's really about 7 minutes closer to Birmingham than that. They don't advertise breakfast, but locals can pull up around back before they officially open and get a decent biscuit sandwich.

Green Top is an institution in North Central Alabama and l must admit my bias first off because I was raised on this BBQ. I recommend anyone who loves a great pork sandwich to stop in because it is worth the drive from anywhere. They will fill a huge baked potato with barbeque or for the more health conscious a barbeque salad. In addition might I suggest barbeque chicken with white sauce or their savory barbeque ribs and the hamburgers are always a popular choice. But if you don't try anything, be sure to have an order of hand cut fries with Green Top's homemade ranch sauce. Only one stop and I promise you'll be back again and again!

If you are anywhere near Birmingham, I highly recommend this hole-in-the-wall bbq institution. Ask for the end/outside pieces of pork, the ones that get crispy and caramelized. I like bacon, but not a huge ham fan----this stuff was off da hook! Their tangy bbq sauce makes my mouth water 3 weeks ago and 2000 miles away. I also enjoyed the coleslaw. Watch out for that sweet tea, they mean business with the sweet part :) I dare say it would be worth it to have this stuff delivered to the Bay Area, that's how good it is. Can't say how well it travels at this time, but stay posted.....

Awesome sliced pork BBQ & the grilled rolls they call toast are irresistible. I got a bonus of a fly in my tea. I showed it to the cashier when he asked "was everything all right?". With out a word to say, he got me a fresh glass of tea! (most likely from the same urn where the fly met his demise) Now that's the kind of service that you won't just get anywhere!

A really grimy hole-in-the-wall. It's not the best bbq I've ever had, but maybe I just don't like Alabama style bbq. I like bbq with tons of sauce and spices cooked into it and this isn't it.

Saturday night was my first time there & it was not very good. The service was bad & so was the food. My daughter & I stopped in around 7ish to eat, I thought I had walked into The Dew Drop Inn at first. Most of the tables in the front area were dirty but we found one in the bottom area, the server took our order never telling me that one of the items I had ordered was an appetizer. Our sandwiches came & they were not on plates but wrapped up in paper and thrown into a basket. I asked about my onion rings & the lady that brought us our food said she did not see any on our ticket (I already had my receipt too) she said she would fix us some but it would be about 10 mins since there were other orders in front of us. REALLY, you are going to make a customer that has already gotten their food wait for 10 mins to you can take care of new orders?! Our server came over and told me that onion rings were appetizers and people did not usually order them with their meal. I told her that this was my FIRST time in there & probably my LAST time. She called the manager over to remove them & he was more interested in finding the lost cordless phone than he was about an upset customer. He looked at me and gave me a 1/2 appology and walked off. The food itself was not good the pork & the chicken were dry and the sauce taste like ketchup with pepper sauce in it. I would have possibly given the place another chance because maybe the food was just an off night but after the bad service I will not be back.

All I could taste was cigarette smoke... Don't go unless you're a chain-smoker.
