If you work in the area, I can definitely recommend Gus's Hot Dogs. This place is quite literally located in a parking deck. Much like some of the other similar establishments in the area, there is very limited seating, so you may want eyeball a bench for consumption in the case that there are no stools available. Every time that I have eaten Gus's I am pleased by both the staff, who are quite friendly, and the food, which is of exceptional value in my book. I can personally recommend the Chilly-Cheese Burger - Fully Loaded. This chilly cheese burger comes with the works - mustard, mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickles, a freshly grilled burger, a hearty spoon of chilly (like having 2 patties it is so meaty) and a piece of cheese... For less than $3, you just can't beat it!!! Note: CASH ONLY. On a related note, and tying this together with the friendly staff - I recently ordered before noticing I was about 50 cents short for my order. I indicated that I needed to run to the ATM, to which they told me to give them what I had - that the rest was on the house... You just don't find service like that anymore! Thanks guys!

Ok, if you don't love this place, you're a commie. Gus's is a cultural staple of Birmingham and represents both where we've come from and the foodie movement of today. A perfect wiener with just the right snap, the scrumptious meat sauce, the zing and crunch of the slaw, and the historic nature of the location and the staff make this simple meal a must-try for any visit to Birmingham. I don't know how you'd get a true taste of the city without trying one of these hot dogs. And you need to do it now. Who know's if Gus's will be there tomorrow. The past few years haven't been too friendly to the city's other historic hot dog stands making this one of the last standing. $5.00 will buy you two dogs. Get a bag of chips and a soda and you've got a great meal. Don't like hot dogs, try a burger, fresh made before your eyes in this narrow building and eat it standing at the counter while the line snakes out the door. Makes me hungry just writing this....Get you some Gus's TODAY!

Okay, it's a hot dog joint. You go here for a dog and you cannot expect exceptional dining. But, it you are in the mood for a hot dog and you are downtown, I would go here. The menu is limited to hot dogs, hamburgers and a few other sandwiches. Parking is difficult, and, you probably need to have some quarters to park on the street. Also, they only take cash. These are two big drawbacks. Seating is also very limited. Hey, this is a miniscule space. I liked the dogs, but I found the hamburger sauce they put on too sweet. When I want a hot dog this would be my first choice. Gus's is a staple of Birmingham, but it's just a dog.

I went here with my family after a delayed flight! It was just an awesome experience! Gus was this sweet older jewish man and he was so hospitalable. The cook that day was a guy who went by L.A. for lower alabama. He had been working there for a few days. The food was great, we all got different kinds of hot dogs and they were awesome! As the other reviewers said, this place is literally in a parking garage! Quite funny, hehe =) If you are in the neighborhood, I'd definitely stop on in!!!

My favorite is the special dog with cheese. What's on this, you ask? Special seasoned ground beef, sweet and tangy special sauce, kraut, onions, mustard and a well grilled weiner. It's delicious, it's cheap and it's a legend here in Birmingham. Don't go expecting to sit down in the place if you are claustrophobic. L.A. never ceases to amaze me with how well he remembers every order. And George ( owner) is super sweet. My mom, who has been eating here well before I was born 36 years ago, hipped me to this place. Thanks mom!

Gus's Hotdog is a unique tradition for many folks who work around the financial district. It's located partly inside of a parking deck, it's almost like a hole in the wall. The food is excellent for the price, you can't get better value anywhere like Gus's downtown. If you're hungry, go for a Special Dog (top with everything!!!) and a Double Cheeseburger w/Bacon for a TOTAL LESS THAN $6!!! In short, great food, even better prices!!! P.S. CASH ONLY....

This tiny place is probably the most efficient eatery I've been to. Delicious cheap hot dogs in minutes cook right in front of you. They also offer sandwiches like balonga and egg sandwiches and the typical BLTs. it helps to know the hot dog language but they don't make you feel like a dunce when you don't. I'll definitely return (maybe even before we leave Alabama) lol

Looking for a good hot dog around town, make sure you try Gus's. You might say, well a hot dog is a hot dog. While there is only so much you can do with a hot dog, Gus's really does stand out. They also have some good breakfast options if you just need something quick to go. It's a really old fashioned kind of place with mostly regulars keeping them in business, I imagine. Located on the corner of the 4th avenue/19th street parking deck, so it's pretty easy to find. About the only time I make it over there is on a Saturday since they close at 5 on weekdays. It's more of a lunch place like everywhere else on Northside. The two guys who work there are really cool and personable. It is cash only, which is always a problem for me because I have a bad habit of using my debit card for everything. Gus's is worth making the walk to the ATM, though.

If you are looking for a wholesome salad, this isn't your spot. What hot dog joint is? My hot dog with mustard and sauerkraut was so tasty. We ordered the chili cheese fries and the plain cheese fries...go with the plain cheese fries. The owner was there and he was so sweet easy to talk to.

I recently made my first visit to Gus's Hot Dogs and was quite impressed. I am typically not a huge fan of hot-dogs, however it was National Hot Dog Day, so I decided to make an exception and boy I'm I glad I did. The location of Gus's Hot Dogs is quite unique which adds to the experience, it is underneath a parking garage and is only about a car length's wide. Although it was a bit cramped during lunch hour, I now know why, the hot dogs are delicious. The two dogs I had were slaw dogs which were served with a juicy hot-dog, onions, mustard and slaw. They were a little messy, but that's how all good hot dogs are in my experience. Additionally, at 2 dollars a hot-dog, it was a great deal! This is a great place for a quick bite to eat.

We were driving through Birmingham on a road trip and wanted something fast but tastier than regular drive thru fast food... I saw this was near by and read some good reviews so we decided to give it a try. Although we did have to wait more than we expected for fast food, i have to say this was the best chilli dog i have ever eaten.(period) that alone gave it four stars and then the good and welcoming service gave it the fifth one.

Saturday, March 8th, Tony and I was visiting Birmingham. We spent the morning investigating and enjoying the Tannehill Ironworks Historical Site..hiking around and enjoying history of Iron Ore and how it is made...very fascinating. then we drove the 30 minutes into Birmingham. We found on-street parking (FREE ON SATURDAY and SUNDAYS at the meters) and started walking around checking out old buildings, the architecture and old churches...we decided we were hungry so I used my trusty YELP APP to find near by restaurants and it pointed us in tthe direction of Gus's Hot Dogs...so we started our my directions link and walked right to their ffront door..(((( GREAT APP BY THE WAY)))) Well, when we opened the door, I almost turned around...but we went in. The place is very small and narrow. I am slightly claustrophobic but I tried not to panic..the cooking area takes most of the space. It has a high counter top so that way he is sort of looking down at you ..or at least me anyway, I am only 4' 11.... We checked out the menu..the prices were unbelievable ...so cheap!!! No alcohol is served. No bathroom. No tables only a counter top running around the walls with bar stools maybe 10 total..on the counter tops there are hot sauce, salt pepper, napkins and cayenne pepper in shakers along with the salt and pepper. They make breakfast also..they have fried bologna sandwiches...sounded good!!! We ordered 2 hot dogs (one chili cheese and one special dog) and a medium drink for only $5.00 including taxes!!!! Hell that is the price of one Hot Dog alone in Nashville!!!! The hot dogs were amazing. I split the two hot dogs in half so that way we could share them. We only one hot dog each because we never had them and wanted to make sure they were good besides we might find more food around the corner we want to try..didn't want to get full in one seating... OMG !!! one bite of the Special dog and I was hooked. It was a combination of sweet and savory with a touch of heat...I didn't even have to add salt and pepper..this has to be one of the best HOT DOGS in all of my 50 years on earth... The chili cheese dog was good, mainly spicy from the chili..I could and would eat it again but the Special Dog was my favorite. As we left I left a $1 tip in the tip jar for the cook. Told him it was amazing and he was all smiles. We told him we were from Nashville, visiting for the day and he invited us back. The most expensive thing on the menu was a double cheese burger for $3.75 and all prices include the taxes. No Credit Cards accepted and no credit given. Cash only !!! Well, Tony and I left and walked around for a few hours more and then decided, HECK I want another Gus HOT DOG before we leave this city..so we mapped our way back to 4th Ave North to get another GREAT HOT DOG..I opened the door and said "We are back" and the cook behind the counter smiled and laughed...You want your usual? I said "YEP" give us another round..so we got exactly the same thing again and shared them again...I was full!!! after 2 hot dogs over the course of 4 hrs I couldn't eat another bit, but Tony smiled and said I need at least two more Special Dogs..so he ate 2 additional dogs by himself.. We are definitely going to be enjoying Gus's HOT DOGS in the future. I told Tony, whenever we are in the area, even if just driving by Birmingham or within a 100 mile radius..I have to drop in...and grab myself a "Special Dog" at Gus's on 4th!!! YOU HAVE TO TRY THEM!!!! Let me know what you think!!!!
