Very interesting atmosphere. No Visit to Seward is complete without a stop at Thorns for the famous "Bucket of Butt"(Halibut)

This place is amazing. It was like stepping back in time. The decor was amazing. The guys at the bar were great. We got lunch here, wandered around Seward, and ended up coming back for another round of drinks. I'm not a huge fan of fried fish, but it was one of the better meals I had in Alaska.

As a girl who LOVES her Townie Bars, Thorn's Showcase Lounge is now top of my favorites list. The bar is dark, features pull-tabs, and the walls are lined with really cool decanters. The leather bar stools squish when you sit and, if you listen hard enough, you can get the best fishing tips on the planet from guys who know their stuff. Have I mentioned the Bucket O' Buts??? Damn fine Halibut. Damn fine. Our bartender was THE BEST, the crowd entertaining, and the atmosphere perfection.

Halibut was good (not greasy or heavy coating) but pretty expensive 14 "chunks" for $28 (no sides). Had slaw and garlic bread for sides, not exciting. Very diving place that was last decorated in the 1960s. Found the tables/chairs to be too crammed together. Bathrooms were marine style (e.g. very tight). Bottom line a bit divvy, ok food, probably can do better in town if you don't want the dive feel.

  • Darryl K.

Nice bar with a 1960's vibe; red leather/pleather chairs and a very comfortable padded bar to lean on. Friendly bar tenders who are willing to talk with tourists about the town and fishing. Halibut bites are perfect to snack on while drinking. We stopped back a couple times.

  • Scott K.

Just say no. That's all. Expensive sub-par bar food. Supermarket wine and beer list. Decor is worth a look. I am a sucker for vinyl padded rooms.

Really cool place. This place achieves what it has set out to do. Solid local comfortable local restaurant/lounge. Cool retro atmosphere. Delicious bloody and excellent halibut...not covered in breading.

Thorn's occupies a special place in my heart, the atmosphere the food the drinks and the employees are what i think of when i think of Winter in seward or really any small coastal town in Alaska. The White Russians are the best i have ever had, their steaks and (my favorite) steak sandwich are awesome. Fairly simple food that is always well made, lots of fried stuff. The chocolate cake is the only desert i have tried, but when my partner was pregnant she had it at least 3 times per week. Prices are seward prices and can add up quickly especially if you are having drinks but well worth it.

The place is old and looks like a saloon out of the 70s but the food was fabulous! We had burgers and chowder and I walked away extremely happy! Don't let the exterior fool you... Check this place out when you are visiting the sea life center.

  • April O.

Love it! The Halibut nuggets were tasty, the 6 layer chocolate cake was divine...and the ambience and service were great! Next time i'm in town we'll definitely visit again!

  • Aleida S.

Stopped by hoping for New England style clam chowder but that's only served on Fridays, so I ordered the shrimp basket with tater tots. The shrimp was melt in your mouth fresh and delicious and who can go wrong on the taters? Great atmosphere and friendly bartender.

  • Angela B.

Kind of a cool ambiance. Also, as far as I can tell, the only place to get a decent cocktail in Seward. (We had manhattans, which were much better than expected.) The entire bar is surrounded by little glass cases containing cool/interesting/different liquor bottles (ie, a bottle of bourbon shaped like a carriage, super vintage bottles from decades and decades ago). We didn't eat there, but they do serve food. Friendly & attentive service.

We came to Seward, Alaska for June wedding. We love the town. Our friends from NY told us about Thorn's Showcase Lounge while we were having dinner at Ray's. They ran into it by mistake after a long arduous hike on the Glaciers. Our friends had lunch there. Then our friend met a Captain at the wedding. He met us right after work and took us to Thorn's Showcase Lounge that same evening for a drink. We also ran into our Captain that took us to Fox Island for the wedding. We love the place...remind us of old Hollywood/Las Vegas retro bar...throw back in time. It is dark and cozy inside with vintage bottles along all the walls. The red retro seats have wheels and very comfy. The Captain knows the bartendar. The bartendar was very friendly and nice. He made some AWESOME drinks for us. We found out that his girlfriend was working at the wedding in Fox Island. This is a very small town....interconnectiveness. The patrons are very friendly...a young woman even offer us her drink! LOL

Walked in this place and thought, "Thorn, where have you been all my life?!!" If I could wrap you up in a chintzy leopard print blanket and take you back home with me, I would. The outside alone clued me in that this was a very special place indeed. It looked like a 60s-era Reno casino that had somehow been plopped down in the icy port town of Seward, AK. Heck, this place survived the infamous 1967 volcano! God willing, I had to discover this nestled hidden gem. A small gasp escaped me as I walked into the smoky, dark bar. (No windows. Natural light? Who needs it!) There is much button-covered, red and gold sparkly vinyl covering on walls, bars, and chairs. Sounds sexy, doesn't it? Well, it is. The carpet screams "JACKPOT! Ding a ling ling ling!" But most importantly, there is one of the most impressive Jim Beam liquor bottle collections in the world. Apparently it is worth over one million dollars, but the owner refuses to sell. Owner, I salute you. I could gawk all day at the beautifully lit bottles displayed wonderfully in glassed-in shelves throughout the entire bar. Jim Beam made some ridiculously awesome collector bottles back in the day. Get some greasy grub, have yourself a Tom Collins, and wait for Ann-Margret to walk in the door...

Classy Alaskan dive bar. Leather upholstery everywhere. The beer is great and the halibut is tasty. People that work here are nice. Can't go wrong.

  • Zach C.

Walk in and you feel like you're stepping back in time. This dimly lit lounge is a great place to stop for a stout cocktail. Sit back into a comfy red pleather chair and gaze upon their spectacular Jim Beam bottle collection. Sports on the big screen and supposedly some of the best hamburgers in Seward. Definitely a unique spot and a place I will visit again.

  • Yukon P.

The decor is heavy 70's. The menu is somewhat limited. So, sit back in the 70s decor, order the halibut and prepare to be amazed. So up front, I hate fish; it smells, it smells, it taste like it smells. I had the lunch special, 7 pieces and fries, it was perfect. I don't understand how they did it, but this is a fish I could eat again and again, in fact craving it now. Wow-well done. BTW-I witnessed a douchebag customer and the the server handled the @$$ with perfection. Kinda funny to watch.

How have I never been here before? This is right in downtown Seward, next to the brewery. It looks odd from the outside, like you're not supposed to go inside. Go inside. I came here for a concert and had a great time. A slightly older crowd than the other Seward staples (Yukon and Alehouse), but just as fun. Decent beers on tap (Fresh Squeezed is becoming my go-to lately) and friendly people.

  • Wooj H.

Divey, strange, and awesome. I was hesitant to go here based on its looks but I decided to give it a try. I am glad that I did, but I had a great time and meal here. Fried halibut + Chips is delicious. Lightly battered, huge chunks of halibut were perfectly fried. Seafood cream soup (basically a clam chowder) was also outstanding. It is a little pricey, but it is totally worth it. Seemed like a popular spot for both locals and tourists. Like some of the other reviews indicated, it is a welcoming/friendly place for tourists.

  • Brian W.

What a find in the little town of Seward! Take your self back in to time when you walk in. That decor is from the 60'-70's. Vinyl seating with a love seat style seats. Walls lined with vintage ceramic liquor items. Lcd TV for ESPN brings you back to reality. Great staff, food awesome and you can go wrong with Alaskan Beer....get a Halibut burger to 2lbs of steamers in garlic and lemon juice broth. More than enough for 4. The halibut fried lightly. No greasy plates left. Tater tots as a side ... Yum

    (5)
  • Christina C.

OK, the decor is totally weird. They have booth chairs and the place looks a bit divey, BUT the food is worth it! Plus, if you're a sports fan, they have ESPN playing all the time. We ordered the bucket of Halibut with tots (Halibut was good, but a bit on the tougher side and tots, of course were delicious), and their Rockfish special with a side of cole slaw (which I would recommend!! The Rockfish was super tender and I'm just glad I got to eat some greens haha). Not sure how drinks are, but I'm positive they have a full bar and that drinks are decently priced.

  • Emily S.

What an awesome place!!! It has such a cool feel and look inside! We felt like we were back in our grandpas old basement with the old collectable liquor bottles, the sweet chairs, the red velvet bar, even down to the bathroom was unique. BUT --- The food was AMAZING! Every one in our party (5) got something different and loved it all. Of course the best is the Halibut Chunks!! Wow!! Best Halibut ever, perfect breading not too thick and its hands down the best seafood I have ever eaten. I rly liked their rasp. vinaigrette salad dressing as well! Every one in there was just very happy, also. Enjoyable!! Go here if you are in town!!!

  • Pamela E.

OMG the seafood chowder and Halibut basket were excellent. My husband and I shared. A great late lunch on a rainy day. Would never have gone in if not for a recommendation. Don't let looks deceive. Nice local beers on tap too.

  • Christina L.

Were told to go here by the ladies that worked at the bank when I asked where to eat. Once I told them we were catching a cruise they told me it was too far to walk. So happy we didn't listen. It's a very strange looking place but adds to the perfection of this place. Split a halibut fish and chips and clam chowder. One of my favorite bowls of soup ever and the halibut was so good. But special props to what must have been homemade tartar sauce. Oh my goodness I'm going to be dreaming about that stuff!

  • Crys A.

What an interesting, off the wall, cool kind of place. The decor is ... quirky. The restrooms are kind of falling apart and I kept banging into doors and drawers. The bartender was a nice guy and he seemed to know all the locals, but was also welcoming to us newcomers. The drinks were poured nicely. We didn't eat, but the people who did seemed to like it. They boast the best halibut fish and chips in Seward, so you might want to go with that. I wish my hotel had been closer to this place because I would have had drinks there every night (and at Ms. Gene's). Try it! Have an open mind. It's a gem.

Unexpected stop in Seward and my trusty Yelp app indicated this as a viable lunch choice. Very retro, interior circa 1978 and totally charming! In summary clean, friendly service, plenty of sports on large TVs, cold beer and fantastic fish. We're from Seattle and we love our halibut fish and chips. It was a bit of dare to see if they could measure up. In a word fantastic! Sad this isn't down the street from my house!

My review is for the Halibut Fish & Chips..... Lightly battered which brought out the taste of the fish. Definitely a MUST try =) A++

I came from Texas and was really looking forward to eating at Thorns based upon the awesome reviews that have previously been posted. I am sad to say that I am throughly disappointed. I ordered the blackened halibut special and it was insanely salty. Salty to the point where it was not edible. I politely told my server that I was not satisfied and she said she would let the manager know. The manager did not even bother to come by the table to ask if there was anything else I wanted or they could do because obviously I came here to eat dinner and not leave hungry. The server came by to say "We took $12 off your bill. Would you like separate or split checks?" Um, perhaps a better question would be if I wanted something else off the menu? So thank you Thorns for the poor service and lack of manager involvement. I expected better. And now I'm off to eat dinner elsewhere.

Halibut is great, but nothing extraordinary. Atmosphere is quite interesting, but not the best if you wanted to have an audible conversation with your party. Service was quite slow, taking over 20 min for us to get our food. Our waitress if was very nice and checked on us quite a few times. Bathrooms are ok. They do also have a bar which is open very late. The restaurant closes at 11, but the bar is open until 2 a.m. Overall a nice place to stop by in Seward for a meal or drink.

  • Tom B.

This place is fantastic. We ate there twice in two days while waiting for a cruise. It's a really comfy little restaurant and the food is so delicious. I was genuinely sad to leave because it meant we had to say goodbye to their halibut chunks, which are quite possibly the best thing I've ever eaten.

I was walking through Seaward and saw this place. From the outside I was not too sure about eating here, so I looked it up on yelp. It had good reviews so I decided to try it. I'm glad I did! As soon as I walked in the door I knew I would like this place. It was like I walked back into time. I don't know how old it really is but it was in great shape and it reminded me of the 70s . It had a dive bar feel to it but was very clean. The bartender was very cool, and the waitresses were very nice. I love looking at all the decanters in the cases each one had a story. I had a hamburger and it was really good. I enjoyed this place in talking to the locals here. Which to me it is a good sign if you see a lot of locals eating at a restaurant. If you are looking for unique fun and awesome atmosphere this is the place to eat at.

Came into Seward hungry and immediately looked for food to eat. We came here based upon the reviews and found them to be mostly accurate. Our server was extremely friendly and the food was great. However, their famous halibut here was nothing more than just good. It was the best halibut that I've tried so far in Alaska but it still wasn't "finger-licking" good. Overall I had a great first experience.

  • timothy b.

This place is the real deal. The decor is perfect and preserved from the past. The fish n chips were as good as they get. No frills, just lightly battered fresh halibut and fries. So glad we stopped here. Friendly service too. Definitely felt like the right place to eat in Seward.

  • Kent H.

I like this "gin joint"! I loved the padding on the walls and bar, and all the decorative decanters on the walls. I had the prime rib, and it was done to my liking. They are known for their "bucket of but", halibut chunks deep-fried, and it looked tasty from what I could tell. I was told that their signature drink was a White Russian, since they use whole cream instead of half and half. Not my drink, but I thought I would pass that along. The bartender was very friendly and helpful. I ended up leaving with a handful of complimentary keychains to spread around. Very cool locals place.

  • Wendy C.

We came at the NBA final night so it's kinda crowdy and waiting for seat/food can take long. Apart from that, pretty nice!

    (4)
  • Liz S.

Don't be fooled by the quiet exterior or the dark campy 70s interior (gold cushions on the ceiling). The halibut is Phenomenal! I had the halibut and fries, delicate flaky pieces of fish cooked perfectly and not dredged in batter. Highly recommend!

I've refrained from writing a review for Thorn's for a while. I'm afraid to let everyone know about how awesome this local bar is. It's the epitome of a gem, hidden behind hoards of touristy places in Seward and within clouds of smoke. You find some wonderful local people and also some gruff, but genuine bartenders. It's an interesting place with quite the collection of liquor bottles, even finding an applejack from my local distillery. But somehow the 70's-ish leather bar-stools almost keeps it timeless. Bottom line it's the place I want to go for a beer and just hang out, meet some locals and have a good time.

My review is probably wonky, but who cares. I lived in Anchorage for two years and my parents visited one summer - wanted to go to Seward for a fjord tour. It was an ugly rainy day [mid-summer] so we took refuge at Thorn's for a drink and some downtime. We didn't get food, just a drink - but it was lovely. Our server gave me a keychain from the place. It advertised the place and said "Seward AK - Where the Funshines!" I live in Los Angeles now - I'm a CA native. I've had this keychain on my keys since I moved from AK to CA [three years ago]. It warms me - as does the wonderful service.

To start, I am allergic to Halibut!! It certainly limits my menu options in Seward Alaska. So I went ahead and had the baby back ribs. They were fantastic!! My wife went ahead and had the Halibut and said they were delicious too. Enjoyed dinner while we watch the 49ers/Bears football game. Excellent food.

  • Sophie L.

Best fish and chips of the trip! We were on a mission to find the best fish and chips. We ordered them in every restaurant we ate at from Anchorage to Seward to Juneau. Showcase had the best ones, hands down. It's got an awesome dive bar vibe. Prices are typical Alaska prices. It's a must in Seward. Grab a beer (or 5) and order the biggest bucket of halibut chunks you can get. Enjoy!

    (4)
  • Scott E.

Best crowded restaurant, causal atmosphere, nice portions, reasonable prices from high season.

    (4)
  • Tammy B.

When I read the the Halibut and chips was good, those reviews were not kidding. Seriously my mouth had an entirely new reintroduction the the beauty of a seriously food fish. I have always loved Halibut but wow. That baby was fresh. Like jumped out of the ocean straight into a knife fresh. I wouldn't be lying if I said I would not make that drive from Anchorage to Seward just to eat those beauties again. The staff was friendly-ish. I mean it is a bar lounge, and they get SO many people in and out of Seward because of tourists, its gotta get old. So I wasn't expecting a beer and a handshake. The environment was like stepping into a different century. FUN! It was seriously just fun, so much to look at and it was very comfortable and the lighting cozy. If you do go, make sure you pop up to the bar and ask about the Urns!!! You won't be disappointed you did.

  • Megin O.

Looking from the outside, I was concerned. However, you should not be! Yes, it is a place right out of the 70s but who the heck cares. I'd personally never seen so much red vinyl in one place... including "love seat" style chairs at the tables. The halibut is solid, the waiter was nice and attentive, and the seafood chowder was da bomb. Would totally come back if I'm in Seward at 10 p.m. looking for a place to eat.

    (4)
  • Jon D.

Divey-looking old-school bar with slightly wobbly red vinyl upholstery and old decanters lining every inch of wall space. They claim to have the "best halibut in Seward"... and they're not lying. Perfectly cooked, very lightly battered. Nothing to improve upon. "Bowl of 'but" and a can of Rainier. Nothing better downtown.

    (4)
  • James T.

Food = ? Price = 5 (Alaska is a 5.50 to 6.00 state... not cheap) Experience = 5 Decanter crazy Padded walls Beers only here... a locals spot, for sure! Try the love seats with casters... they are very unusual!

Stopped in while visiting Sea Life Center. Service was good and food ok. Parents with kids note smoking ok in place, so if it bothers you....I would probably order out next time due to smoking.

    (3)
  • Dawn C.

I literally had good food goosebumps and had to close my eyes when I tasted their crab stuffed halibut. Went back the next day to get a "Bowl of Butt" Bar atmosphere inside; family friendly.

  • Patricia Z.

I had the halibut basket and my boyfriend had the chicken basket. The halibut was VERY lightly battered, which is how it should always be, and it was delicious. Perfectly cooked and juicy. They served the basket with fries, which I paid an extra $2 for sweet potato. Yummy, but they are your standard sweet potato fries you would expect. The chicken basket was also delicious. It's fried chicken fingers that are all white meat, HUGE, and very moist. They had a peppery battered flavor on them. My boyfriend got the regular fries with his, which were also very good, but be warned that they are on the saltier side. Of course they also serve Alaskan beer, so that's a plus as well. The service was excellent. Our waiter was very attentive and quick, and the food also came quickly and hot out of the frier. Someone mentioned the smoke in the bar as a negative. We went for lunch at noon and no one was smoking, so no problems there. The women's restrooms were also very clean (but outdated), but I'm guessing they are rarely used.

  • Annie K.

PROS: - bucket of 'but (halibut) was very tasty. lightly battered chunks of moist halibut. yum! - prices were reasonable - Dez the waitress is awesome! very attentive, brought my entire table water "just in case" CONS: - they allow smoking! apparently several places in Seward allow this. blech Overall if I were to come back for food I'd come at 11am right when they open unless you are okay breathing in second hand smoke with your food. yuck :( but overall a fun place to start the evening :)

  • Kalyn M.

Reminded me of the bar in the shining. Kinda smells funny in there or at least it did to me. Lot of locals congregate here and talk about things you don't really want to hear. Food was very good- I had the steamed clams and they were exceptional. Seafood chowder was good- not enough seafood tho. Boyfriend had the steak finger (good but overcooked) and halibut basket (very good) I'd go back.

  • Kailyn G.

Visiting Seward at the end of February - I didn't have tons of restaurant options. I cam to Thorns with some co-workers and it's got a nice cozy feel. We sat in the corner by the speaker - so music was a little bit loud. I got the pepperjack burger and onion rings. A little bit spicy for me - but I have a pretty low tolerance. It was a solid burger, but I wouldn't call it outstanding. I kind of wish I had tried the halibut. Environment: Dark, supper club + bar kind of feel. Service: waitress was really nice. But service was slow. The restaurant was a lot more crowded than I would've guessed, so that might account for the slow service.

  • Joe C.

I'm really glad the lady at the local candy shop recommended this place when I asked for a good place to get lunch. I recall her saying, "Thorns makes the best hamburgers in town". Myself, being a firm believer of the when-in-Rome mantra, took her advice and walked into this very interesting restaurant/bar. I ordered a hamburger for take-out. I'm so glad I ordered take-out because the tobacco smoke inside was a bit intolerable and I probably would not have survived sitting through an entire meal. I'm a non-smoker. I waited at the bar while my food was being prepared and it was just enough time for me to get a real feel for the place. Like the others have said, the dim lighting and unique velvet pin-cushioned furniture is truly a sight to behold. The other reviewer's old Las Vegas comparison is spot on. When I walked through the entrance, I thought I had stepped through a time machine, taking me back 50 years in time. Nevertheless I loved every bit of it....the interior décor manifests a part of real Americana that you just don't find anymore. So if you're the adventurous type looking for something different and if you can tolerate a large room filled with smoke, then I recommend Thorns for a good meal. Non-smokers may want to opt for take-out like I did (perhaps dine outside in the nearby shoreline park if the weather is nice). By the way, in case you're wondering about my hamburger, yes, it was excellent. It could very easily have been the best hamburger in all of Seward. I'm not sure. But if there were a moral to this story, it would be to always ask a local for suggestions. If I didn't ask the lady in the candy store, I would never have found this unusual restaurant/bar with all its local flair and old style character.

Stopped in for a late lunch on a Sunday. There was only one waitress working. Service was VERY slow because of that fact. We had the halibut bowl which was fine. I liked the tator tots. Drinks were overpriced, as with most of Alaska. We wouldn't go back. There are other places to try in Seward.

  • Lard Belly E.

Always a good time. Cool liquor bottles adorn the walls with a cheap vinyl lounge decor makes for a laid back time. Though, one downside is the smokinng in bar, I'm not a fan of that...

great Food, Large portions for a decent price. Great Waitress and Great bartender i always recommend this place to tourists and as a local i go there all the time.

  • Dana P.

This place is one of those "Ya gotta see it to believe it joints.". The other reviewers have captured it beautifully so I'll focus on the service. We went on two occasions during the week of the 4th of July and we met two of the waitresses. Holy smokes! They were frowzy, crude, coarse and genuinely, sincerely sweet. I liked these women a lot and I got the feeling that they actually cared if I was having a good time. If you're looking for fancy and refined, this is not the place for you. If you're looking for an old time bar & grill, you'll not be disappointed with Thorn's!!!

I would have to say that if you find yourself in Seward looking for a meal or a stiff drink, Thorn's is definitely where you should go. I have to admit, I was a little doubtful when we first approached Thorns, but in hindsight, it has the kind of kistch ruoghness that calls to me, like a tornado sucked up a little piece of 60's Vegas lounge space and dumped it at the edge of civilization (oops, did I just inadvertantly plagerize Lindsey R.? Sorry). But, as I am sure happens for most sane people, upon entering Thorn's i knew at once I was somewhere i belong. Ultra plush red vinyl covering just about every surface except for the tables, bar, and wall-to-wall cases full of ancient bourbon and whiskey bottles. Low lights, way too many tables, and funky rolling chairs and love seats. I can't remember if people were smoking in there or not, but i remember a haze hanging low in the air, though there could have just been a low haze hanging in my head. Our server, Mike, was super friendly, especially since he was covering for a busy and stressed waitress. And was stick to your ribs good and hardy. They have a special kind of chowder in AK, thick enough to stand your spoon in and don't want to know what's in there to get it like that. their fried chunks of halibut are tender and fresh. And I had a burger that was pretty darn good. They had a decent selection of beers and I'm sure could pour a mean cocktail. Like I said, make this spot your number one choice for Seward, you won't regret it.

The Showcase delivers the one-two punch of being the best place to get a meal and/or a cocktail in town. Their menu consists of the regular daily items, plus they always have a menu of daily specials. The halibut is great, the steaks are great...I mean you really cant go wrong here. Their portions are huge, and a couple items on the menu are a really good value for this town, though their prices are on par with the other restaurants. Example: you're going out for a night on the town but your stomach is empty. Theres no way you're going to make last call at the Pit unless you get some good grubbin. For $2.95 you can get yourself a huge baked potato with all the fixins. They don't skimp on fixins. They make a hell of a caucasian too. You want ambiance? They have super comfy chairs that roll on casters and rock, upholstered in the finest button leather style you have come to expect from a swanky '70's lounge. You wish you had this place in your town. Picture yourself rocking back, comfortably sipping the finest manhattan you've ever had and letting your eyes wander over their huge collection of vintage figurine booze bottles. They also provide complimentary dinner for thanksgiving and earthquake day.

Overall: Reasonable value for bar and greasy-spoon food. Food: We had lunch here, so I can't judge their dinner offerings. We ordered 2 sandwiches and the chicken parmesan. All dishes were reported as tasty, and portions were not huge but enough to be filling. Aside from the breakfasts at the B&B, this food was probably the most consistently tasty of what we had in our 3 days in Seward. Service: Friendly and prompt. Servers tag-teamed in bringing dishes and clearing plates. Server frequently checked about drink refills. Value: Reasonable for a tourist-y town. Lunch selections ran $8-10. Decor: A little chintzy but comfortable -- it's a bar, after all. Lots of cheap leather, and the walls are lined with a very large collection of ?liquor bottles.
