They do make the best steak around, but having to constantly check for hairs in my food? No thanks! We have been there 6 times, 3 times we got a hair. We will not be going back.

Not sure if they were having an off night, or what, but did not have a good experience. The halibut was overcooked. And for $24, I would've expected better. Those in my party had the steak & burger (so no seafood) and they liked their meals. I guess it serves me right - should not have ordered the fish at a steak restaurant. But, I relied on the other reviewer that said it was the best seafood they'd ever had. (Wonder if that was their first seafood experience, because it was in NO way the best ever.) I asked for no potatoes & only extra vegetables. I got a normal portion of vegetables, and no potatoes. My mistake: the potatoes were the best thing on the menu! Then, to add insult to injury, the service was terrible (no refills for iced tea/water without waving down the waitress). Our food came out an hour after being seated & this was a seemingly not too busy Monday night. Bad service = waitresses fault. Food taking forever = kitchen's fault (we could see when our food was ready, so knew that wasn't the waitress.) All-in-all, save your money. Totally not worth the cost. Expected better from a fishing town. Didn't give it 1 star, because the burger & steak were decent. You can get the same or better steak at The Outback for half the price.

We wandered in and were pleasantly surprised..in addition to a wonderful meal we were treated to the music of Hobo Jim, the official Alaskan balladeer...wonderful!

Went looking forward to a halibut dinner, as we were in Homer, AK. We ordered the Halibut Fish & Chips. Got a plate of dry, tasteless, breaded halibut, on a bed of overcooked, limp french fries. Not what we expected from the reviews I read. At our complaint, the waitress called the manager, who explained that they are a steak house. I guess that was suppose to explain why the halibut was so bad. Why offer something on the menu when you know it will be substandard. They did take our dinners away, brought the menus back so we could reorder, suggesting that we stick to their steak dishes. We did as instructed, ordering the Filet Special. It tasted better, and should have at $11.00 a plate more. Total for the two meals, including two glasses of house wine was $94.85, a bit pricy for what we got. The waitress did bring a complimentary piece of cake, which we did not want, for us to share. We were very disappointed with the whole thing. Take items off the menu if you know ahead of time they are not good. Don't take advantage of unknowing tourists.

My wife and I had our 1 year anniversary dinner tonight and it was excellent.steaks were great and cooked to order our server was awesome and they went out of there way to include desert. Thanks

It was awesome. The best french dip I have ever had. They make their own tartar sauce and I recommend it with the french fries. We will be back for sure! The servers were friendly and seemed happy too, that's always nice to see!

Ok I have been going here for a couple years since the Wally's took over and I will say the food is a big improvement from when Chip Duggan owned the place. They get a star just for sprucing up old town. My main gripe is the price. While the food is good it's not that good. $15 burgers, $30-$40 entrees, it's just to much money for the setting, service and quality. This place would make a killing with $8 burgers and $20 entrees. Specifics- the burgers are good but not the best in town. Handmade and come with all the fixings. I really don't care for shoestring fries so I subbed for the salad to make for a $17 burger. We split an order of the shoestring truffle oil fires for an app and the group thought they were decent. A friend had the fish and chips (18). I thought they were pretty good but a little dry. They have all types of music depending on the night from piano, duos and bands which earns them another star. Overall- average food, good music, great location.

Wow what a great experience. It started as soon as we entered. We were greeted by the friendly staff. Our waitress Joni was polite, friendly and knew the menu well. I started with the french onion soup and my wife had the iceberg wedge salad. The onion soup was as good as it gets. It was better than many french restaurants that I have eaten at. My wifes wedge was crisp and the tomato, bacon and bleu cheese was homemade and fresh. For the main course my wife had the Alaskan scallops and I had a combo aged NY steak and Alaskan scallops. The steak was prime and cooked perfect. The scallops were to die for, succulent and tasty. The sides were equally as good homemade mashed potatoes and grilled zucchini squash. After the meal Daryl the manager stopped by and we must have chatted for twenty minutes. Most places would have hurried you up to leave, not here. You know if I ever return to Homer AJ's will be on my list of things to do. Kudos to all at AJ's.

This place has come a long ways since its days as an Irish pub. It changed hands just before I left Homer in 2011, and for the better! I was skeptical about the transition to a steak house, but I like what they've done to the joint. The service was fantastic! Very attentive, knowledgable, and genuine. Ambiance was good with a blues musician playing at a respectful noise level for the dinner hour. The food was tasty, and perfectly cooked. I had the mussels app with the kind of bread-sopping broth that runs down to your elbows as you try to mop up every drop. A caesar salad with king crab atop came next. The crustacean portion was very generous, and I was done!

Delicious cranberry salad, pretzel bread, truffle fries with awesome aioli, and NY steak done just right. Nice selection of local beers and wines. Cozy and awesome service! Feels like your birthday everyday!

Delightful restaurant in Homer. This restaurant has friendly staff and good food. Overall, this small town restaurant would rival any restaurant in a metropolitan area. Thankfully, the kitchen was still open when I arrived at nearly 10 p.m. My choice for entree was the bay scallop dinner. The scallops were great, grilled on one side and overall not overly cooked. The sides included green beans and potatoes. The dish overall was good.

Three of us wandered in here after having a few drinks, showed up 15 minutes before the posted closing time, but it was actually as they were flicking the "OPEN" sign off. They took us in anyway, like the slightly-inebriated, hungry bums that we were. We must have looked desperate and they took pity upon us. I don't remember what we ordered -- burgers? Fries? Something. We wanted to order fast and something simple so the cook didn't have to do much for us. Whatever it was that we had, it was great. The man whom I presume is the owner chatted us up and told us a great story when he was a kid and met MLK Junior. There was a pianist, too, entertaining the remaining diners with some great tunes. I swear he played Chopin - my favorite. There were delicious fries, more delicious drinks, good laughs, and a great atmosphere. I am sure AJ's is the reason I wasn't terribly hungover the next day. You da real MVP, AJ.

Came here on vacation on 9/20/15. I ordered the King Crab while my wife had the Halibut. For an appetizer we had the Blue Cheese Chips, which were outstanding. The restaurants down on the Spit all charge around $70 for a pound of King Crab. At this place, they were $49 and they were delicious- sweet, tender and juicy. Our server was Michelle, and she was excellent- attentive and knowledgable. The piano player was a nice touch to finish the evening.

I feel bad for being so harsh on this place. I just came to get dinner "to go" at a time that must have been too busy for them. I got my salads to-go within 20 mins... And just had too much time alone and cold at the bar. I still believe Homer and all in it to be more of a place older people might enjoy. I again felt no warmth or hospitality which was so weird. Everywhere I've been in Alaska has been amazing and people are all so friendly and down to earth, just didn't get that vibe here.

Walked in to a fellow strumming along, Hobo Jim played some great tunes! The prime rib with king crab on top was excellent, the mashed and zucchini provided as excellent sides. Ended with chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream. AJ's came highly recommended and it lived up to its name - come on by and see what I saw, you'll enjoy it.

So glad we stopped by to eat dinner here. After being turned down restaurant after restaurant at the spit, we ended up here. Service was very friendly. The ambiance was so nice and made me wish we had dressed up a bit. There was someone playing the piano. We both ordered salads here and they were great The highlight of my dinner here was the shrimp that they added to it. They totally rocked my taste buds. I think the addition of 5 shrimp to the salad was a bit over priced ($15) but boy they were yummy! We definitely appreciated the kind service we received and would definitely return. This place seems nice for drinks, a date night, or a nice family meal. So nice that I even had a flower on my food :-)

AJ'S was recommended by our RV Rental company and what a great recommendation it was! We were craving a good steak and AJ'S did not disappoint! It came out perfect, along with grilled zucchini and Yukon mashed potatoes! All were delicious. Wine was reasonable in price. Definitely had many seafood options on the menu if you're in the mood for seafood and not steak. All looked great coming out to the other tables. Family owned business and owner comes by every table to see how things were. You need to ask for bread....be sure you do if they don't ask you first...our server, Johnnie was great and asked us if we wanted bread...it's a pretzel type bread and very good! !! Water stayed filled and didn't even see them refill it...they were that quick!!!!

We were seated on the window seats, so it's a great plus to see the mountains as we had some great conversation and a recap of or day out. We had Halibut fish n chips and Prime rib, and crab cakes, not bad.

Overpriced and basic menu. Being a steakhouse I expected so much more from the menu. I was craving halibut and the only dish on the menu was fried. Not exactly what I had in mind. The service was slow and nothing special. I wouldn't go back again.

Great location/5 star meal Ordered the nightly special New York Strip with whiskey cream sauce and immediately placed it 2nd best in Alaska, the first is world know. There genius trick is just buying good quality product , my guess is average to good chef. Great drinks too. Burgers and top notch Steaks for reasonable price, live music on Sat night when I was there Mmhm.

Kristin was our waitress. The meal was over the top. My wife had a steak and I had prime rib, both were great. The mussels were the best ever. Always eat here when in Homer you won't be sorry.

Overall we had a great experience here. The food was really great. I ordered the chicken fettuccine which was really great! My husband ordered a steak with the veggies and fries, and added on some shrimp everything he had was wonderful! He order a caesar salad too which was good, but had way too much dressing on it. We also ordered onion rings which were really good. The atmosphere was really nice. It wasn't too loud and the live music was really nice! The food took a really long time to get to the table, even the salad. Our server was horrible though. He was very slow and rarely came to our table except to bring us our food. He also told my husband that the shrimp to add onto his meal were jumbo sized shrimp when they were small sized, maybe medium. Not at all what we were expecting. That was the only sour note of the night though.

For what you're buying, this pave couldn't be better. The atmosphere is a hybrid between a folkie facade and a really high class joint. They even have live entertainment that comes presently in the back ground which I think is a really righteous touch

The pan seared halibut filet with a light basil sauce and lightly sautéed vegetables is delicious and reasonably priced, and wheat-free; though the mashed potatoes are made with wheat flour. The burgers and Rueben sandwich look delicious with a large helping of fries. They have a variety of drinks to choose from, including the best beer in the world - Homer Brewing Scottish Red Ale - and a variety of decent wines. Hobo Jim was playing - which is some of the best music in Alaska - and I was still able to enjoy a conversation with company without yelling. The staff is friendly, fast, and helpful.

Had a great hamburger and everyone else enjoyed their food. Interesting place with decent prices given the location. However took an hour to get our food and service like most places in Alaska was marginal.

Best halibut and filet mignon that we have ever had. Stellar service! Kids enjoyed their meals and cleaned their plates. A bit off the beaten path, but totally worth it. Deserts were amazing as well.

We stopped in for drinks at the bar after a disappointing dinner at a different local establishment. I wish we would have come here first! The food looked good, the service was really great with friendly staff who paid attention but didn't hover. You can't really mess up beer and wine, but we liked the laid back atmosphere and the live piano music was a nice addition.

AJ's turned out to be a solid choice all around. The steak was quality, the crab bisque rich and tasty, and the butter clams were a table favorite we contemplated ordering more of. The dinning room was warm and inviting; a good thing on a cold and rainy evening in Homer. We missed the Kilchers play that night, but it's good to know that AJ's offers some live entertainment.

Yum! We had some good food here and amazing beer. Our group had the prime rib sandwich, the steak & blue cheese sandwich, and the steak bites. I wasn't completely sold on the steak bites, they seemed to have been boiled not grilled but the meat was tender & the sauce was good! The best though, was the scallops appetizer. We all spent the rest of the meal dipping our bread in the leftover garlic herb sauce.

My wife and I stayed at the Driftwood Inn across the street and ventured over for a drink and appetizer. Our server Erika (sp?) was friendly from the get go and whipped up the BEST bloody mary I've EVER experienced in my life! Seriously! In regards to the food - we only ordered an appetizer, sweet potato fries w/spicy mustard and they were also very good. Worth the visit for sure!

I really liked the feel of this place. The spiked coffee I drank was flavorful & unique. Since I was in Homer, the halibut capital, I decided to try the fish & chips. The chips were great. I'm not a big fry fan, but these were super crispy on the outside & tender inside. As for the fish, it didn't seem like much for the money, but the batter was crisp & golden brown. I don't know if I'm a huge halibut fan, but I enjoyed it fried.

My husband and I dropped by AJ's for a bite to eat after fishing all day and had the best meal in Alaska we've had so far this trip. We were greeted at the door by Brandi with a friendly smile and greeting and shown to a table immediately. My husband had the Serloin steak, and it is the most tender steak he has eaten, and cooked perfectly. I was hungry for a burger, so I had the bacon, swiss, mushroom burger and it too was cooked perfect to my liking. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking to have a good meal. A great meal for a good price. Lyle and Sue

I have been to Homer several times but hadn't heard of AJ's until this trip. The staff were friendly and welcomed us immediately. We were lucky and got immediate seating, even though it was the dinner hour and the place was getting crowded. The restaurant side of AJ's has some wonderful views over the water as well as great local paintings on the walls, so we both had something interesting to look at while we waited (a short time) for our drink orders. There was also a bar side with a stage where there is live music several nights a week. If you don't enjoy that, plan to eat before the music starts at 7pm. There were many excellent local and other AK beers on tap as well as a really nice selection of house specialty cocktails and wines. We both ordered steaks: dad had the prime rib special while I had a combo of scallops and sirloin. Both steaks were cooked exactly as we'd asked and were tender and flavorful. In particular, dad's prime rib had some type of house-made secret rub that gave the exterior of the meat a wonderful smoky flavor. Both steaks were great, but the prime rib in particular was fork tender and extremely flavorful. Fine quality cut of meat! The scallops were sweet and fresh, and the Yukon gold mashed potatoes and grilled zucchini sides were mouthwatering. We split an order of chocolate cheesecake for dessert, and while it was not homemade, it was very tasty and of good quality. Prices were par for this type of food in this location, and really everything was very well prepared. Overall, I was impressed by AJ's and would definitely go back there. If you are in Homer and looking for a nice dinner in a relaxed atmosphere (without driving all the way out East End Road to the Homestead), this is your place.

Just finished a meal-it was truly some of the best seafood we have had in Alaska. We had halibut, salmon, and steak. All were cooked perfectly; moist and obviously fresh. Our server Brandi was attentive, funny and efficient. The lava cake was rich and moist. All in all a delightful meal. We left with a full belly and a smile on our faces. Don't miss it.

AJ's had excellent food and incredibly attentive and caring staff. Their chef personally greeted us when we arrived to accommodate our vegitarians and anything we wanted they did their best to get. Prices were good and the warm and friendly atmosphere made the entire experience a great one.
